Rothman, a professor of history at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and a frequent commentator on the local culture, presents a thorough study of Las Vegas, a city with about as quirky a history as any in the U.S. Though Las Vegas was once just a whistle- stop on the L.A. railroad, loose regulations on adult pleasures and a lock on water access brought in Mob "shoebox money" to finance this paradise of vice in the desert. It was never a secret that Vegas was a syndicate-run town, and throughout the 1950s and 1960s, as city and state authorities looked the other way, the money poured in, but it always remained tainted. Then Howard Hughes bought half the town, and legislation opened up to allow free corporate access. The mobsters were practically run out of town, opening the way for the theme-park-like atmosphere that pervades today. Neon Metropolis

An insightful work. Neon Metropolis is an essential antidote to the many critics who fly to Las Vegas for a quick visit, and leave with biases undisturbed and nothing useful to say.
What sets Rothman apart? He combines academic investigation with close observation, over time, of how this resort town is turning into one of the most successful and popular cities in the United States.
Key to the success of this book is the fact that Rothman lives in this city, where he teaches history at UNLV. He has lived in the brand new subdivisions which excite the derision of tourist-critics who cannot fathom that such planned communities could be anything other than hideously pathological. Rothman, on the other hand, has watched these communities grow with time. His children have played in the nascent sports leagues; he has ridden the mass transit; he has seen how people carve a real community to raise families - for two or three generations now - out of unconventional and even unlikely material. He has tracked political movements and talked to his neighbors at Starbucks. And while these communities may not be perfect - Rothman has an academic's balanced powers of evaluation - they do work. This information is of wider interest as well; Rothman discusses the many ways that Las Vegas is a prototype in developing the emerging urban-suburban cities that we find across the nation.
This book reveals an intriguing urban landscape. We learn how the earlier Las Vegas of the Mob shaped not only its gambling economy, but created its hospitals, churches and other institutional urban infrastructure. We then learn how the Las Vegas of Wall Street (after Hilton, Holiday Inn and other corporations became the major stakeholders) built the foundations for the enormous growth in size, prestige and influence over the last twenty years.
Along the way we see how the many threads of a real city - unions, immigrants, a strong middle-class economy, civic and business leaders, and the city's self-conceptions - have been woven together. Rothman helpfully compares Las Vegas to Detroit's growth along with another booming new industry earlier in the century.
This book is a dose of well-researched reality which should be read by anyone concerned with the health and direction of American cities.

Las Vegas Economically Malleable? NOT!

One of the central theses of this book is that Las Vegas has miraculously "adopted" to the changing economy and has thus prospered more than other major U.S. cities by taking advantage of emerging social and economic trends. The author imagines that Las Vegas is some sort of highly malleable economic miracle machine that rolls with the punches, survives and prospers hugely while other places dependant on more recession-sensitive industries such as technology, manufacturing, and medical research ebb and flow. What nonsense!
Las Vegas, and to an even greater extent its cradle of growth Clark County, have never adopted to ANY emerging economic trend, unless you count the undesirable trend of industrial-scale gaming penetration together with huge resort casinos into every corner of the city, including formerly-protected residential neighborhoods. Quite the contrary, the city has never done anything other than repackage marketing themes that sell gambling and an increasingly aggressive sex industry, advertisements for which pervade just about available public space one views from an automobile. Hide you eyes, kids!
Las Vegas' economic success is certainly not based on economic malleability and adaptability. It is based on 30 years worth of cheap housing, abundant low wage jobs, weak consumer protection, and almost non-existent restraints on development of raw land. Throw in a state and a county government run for the benefit of the gaming industry and developers and voila! The "city of the future", is a vast wasteland of cookie-cutter housing tracts, endless strip malls, and a urban facade often described as "franchise architecture". This is not my vision of a desirable future. And increasingly, many observers in southern Nevada are beginning to realize that Las Vegas is rapidly becoming unlivable due to the city's rush into this future.
For those who have not moved to this place yet, let's hope that Las Vegas is not the future of American urban life, but will remain what is has always been: an aberration maintained solely by unrestrained growth and legalized gambling.

Does Not Reflect Las Vegas' Deep Seated Problems

READER NOTE: See the New York Times article ([...]) of 5/30/04 for independent corroboration of my review, written approximately 6 months earlier.
This book is a good read, successfully revising many of the standard clich?s about Las Vegas, and therefore is a welcome change from so much superficial writing. However, like much of the blatant boosterim that passes for news about Las Vegas, the book essentially ignores the myriad deep-seated social problems out-of-state readers will not be aware of. Nevada in general and Las Vegas in particular are at or near the bottom in many indicators of public life, environmental, and educational health and wellness. The state has even been referred to as the "Alabama of the West" because of its weak state government, relatively poor public health, and poor per capita finance for secondary and higher education. As a practical matter, due to local governments that fail to place even slight restrictions on growth, the Las Vegas Valley is a currently a seething caldron of runaway development, overcrowded schools, roadways approaching gridlock, and increasing water shortages. A pall of dust and smog frequently obscure the surrounding mountains, a direct result of explosive and largely unplanned growth. Rothman's book is entertaining and illuminating about the Las Vegas urban culture. However, it fails to rigorously examine severe underlying problems that heavily influence the quality of present and future life in Las Vegas, in favor of unfounded admiration cloaked in academic-style historical analysis.
A few examples:
? Las Vegas has the highest rate of high school dropouts in the U.S. entering its labor force.
? Las Vegas has one of the lowest percentages of persons in the U.S. with bachelors degrees, given the size of its population, in its labor force. As a University of Nevada - Las Vegas sociologist recently said, you don't think of highly educated people when you think of Las Vegas.
? Las Vegas and Nevada have one of the highest rate of childhood dental problems.
? Las Vegas and Nevada have one of the highest suicide rates and AIDS infection rates in the U.S.
? Las Vegas and southern Nevada have no public mental health hospitals.
? Southern Nevada's only Level I trauma recently closed, but later opened after state intervention, due to physicians leaving the state because of malpractice premiums.
? Three Clark County, Nevada commissioners are facing federal charges for accepting bribes to aid the owner of a local strip club. One other has accepted plea bargains on a similar charge.
? After years of rhetoric about the need to diversity its economy, Las Vegas is more than ever wedded to and dependant on the gaming industry. Other western cities (Albuquerque, Boulder, Salt Lake City, Phoenix) are far ahead in luring technology-based businesses.
This old problem is rooted in the state's lack of a recognized research university coupled with a somewhat accurate image among the sophisticated technology industry as an unimaginative playground of retirees, second-rate schools, gambling, booze, and the flamboyant sex-as-spectacle tourism industry. Can these built-in barriers to becoming a city recognized for something other than slot machines at car washes ever be overcome? This book is completely silent on that topic. So, read this book, but bear in mind Las Vegas and Nevada continue to be places with long standing social, political, economic, educational, and environmental shortcomings usually ignored or not even acknowleged by the elected leadership.

One of the four essential books for the technical writer

This is the best style guide for technical writing I have ever found. It gives more every day practical information than any of the other technical writing books and gives that information in a highly usable format.
My only complaint--my standard complaint about my reference books--is that the index is far less comprehensive than it ought to be. Given modern computer indexing capabilities, one would think authors and publishers could do a better job.
However, with this is one of the four essential books: 1. Strunk and White, Elements of Style, 2. Prentice Hall, Words Into Type, 3. Garner, A Dictionary of Modern American Usage (for the British tech writer, Fowler's Modern English Usage) and 4. Ruebens, Science and Technical Writing. With these four, a technical writer can handle almost any situation that arises. There are other books covering special fields that can be added, but these four will always be the bedrock.
If you are a professional technical writer or only an occasional one, you can't go wrong having this book handy on your desktop.

where credit is due

The second edition of this text makes many useful changes to the previous edition. Hopefully, readers WILL peruse the Preface. On page 36 of that section, there is a FULL explanation of the location and summarizing techniques that make this text extremely usable.
Yes, each chapter does begin with a bulleted list that catalogs the major sub-sections in that specific chapter. Second, the Table of Contents offers page numbers to major topical changes. Third, the Index (compiled by a former president of the American Society of Indexers) references each paragraph in the text.
So, there are multiple ways to find specific pieces of information by using one of three major location techniques: topical changes in the toc, paragraph references in the index, and chapter level tocs at the beginning of each chapter. The latter are NOT, as one reviewer suggests, simply bulleted lists.
I'm happy to see this book issued as a Kindle book and hope others find it useful as an addition to their professional library.

Ehh Just OK

I found this text difficult to use on a regular bases. Yes it has a lot of useful content but searching through it and figuring out how this are organized is a pain. I ended up making use of the ACS: Styles Guide because its more aligned with the type of writing I do. If you can purchases this for a decent price then I would say it might be worth it.

In a thorough and important, if often tiresomely repetitive, study, Solinger (Women's Studies/Univ. of Colorado, Boulder) dissects the politics of female fertility in America from 1945-65, when the strikingly different treatments of middle-class white and poor black pregnant teenagers clearly reflected the demands of a racist, family-centered economy. Before WW II, Solinger reports, unwed mothers in the US were considered the products of defective, amoral environments-- permanent outcasts for whom no kind of rehabilitation was possible. After the war, she argues, a perceived societal need to produce as many white children in ``healthy'' male-headed families as possible, combined with new Freudian psychological theories and racist sociological assumptions concerning black sexuality, engendered a dualistic treatment of unwed pregnant women depending on the color of their skin. Whereas the ``market value'' of white babies enabled and even encouraged white single mothers to ``sacrifice'' their offspring for adoption in exchange for a second chance at respectability (usually after exile in a maternity home), ``unmarketable'' illegitimate black babies were considered the inevitable product of the ``natural'' black libido and were therefore left to be raised by their mothers, who were in turn treated as incorrigible breeders who gave birth to win more government benefits. With the ``sexual revolution'' (for whites) and ``population bomb'' (for blacks) of the late 60's and early 70's came the technological fixes of birth control and legalized abortion--though these steps toward female self-determination for women of all races were more a result, Solinger claims, of a slump in the white baby market and fear of black overpopulation than of societal concern for the fate of single mothers. Stunningly accurate account of the unwed mother experience

Neither "tiresome", "repetitive" nor "dry" (as stated by one reviewer). On the contrary, this book is exciting and refreshingly insightful. Only a "birth" mother can attest to the truth and honesty of the experience Ms. Solinger painstakingly, courageously and historically details in "Wake Up Little Susie".

An Accurate Portrayal

This book helped me understand my mother's surrender of her right to raise me. It has helped tremendously in the reunion between my mom and me. I was especially interested to find that giving away the rights to raise one's child was more of a European-American phenomenon than an African-American one. I remember taking a class once with an African-American woman who was trying to research her family tree. I felt a great kinship with her because my own roots were severed, by adoption rather than slavery. How cruel for society and the adoption industry to coerce mothers into making their babies commodities. I would like to believe that practice has stopped, but even though the maternity homes are no longer there, the coercion still is. Reading Solinger's book made me think and do even more research into the adoption industry. I'm so thankful to Solinger for writing it!

The 800-plus entries in this encyclopedia won't be much help to little Letasha or Luke, perusing the categories for a school project. This is a research tool for grownups, written with a decidedly feminist bias. Each essay is signed by the contributor and presumably represents her opinion on the subject addressed. For example, an entry about pornography is dismissive of arguments about free speech and instead focuses on misogynist imagery and sexist stereotypes. Another section opposes women's participation in the armed forces and argues that because the world's militaries maintain a sexual division of labor and power, they cannot, in any way, benefit female enlistees. In addition, individual achievements are mentioned only in the context of the topic they represent. Thus, there are chapters on animal rights, Zionism, and cyborg anthropology but not on Susan B. Anthony, Nawal El Saadawi, or Gloria Steinem. What's more, many of the sections are steeped in academic jargon, making the work inaccessible to those outside the scholarly community. Nonetheless, the book's international focus it bends over backward to include regions of the world and specific countries that rarely figure in more conventional research manuals is laudable and at times even exciting. This alphabetically organized encyclopedia contains 900 articles relating to global women's issues and written by approximately 450 female subject experts with either university or professional affiliations. The authors are truly international, representing 70 different nations. Aiming to provide "an accessible, trustworthy resource not only for scholars, professionals, and activists, but for the general reader everywhere," the focus is on ideas and actions, excluding biographical articles as well as articles on specific countries, although some countries are examined as case studies (e.g., Aging: Japanese case study). A number of broad topics, such as development and education, are considered region by region (South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, Western Europe, etc.).

Entries such as Adolescence, Digital divide, Ecofeminism, Islam, Maternity leave, Quilting, Soap operas, Surgery, and War help demonstrate the set's broad scope. Following the cross-references, each article or major section includes a list of "References and Further Readings." These bibliographies, generally from four to ten works in length, are comprised of print works for the most part, though some entries do list Web sites. Each volume begins with an alphabetical listing of articles. Volume 1 follows this with a topical listing, sorting the articles into 13 categories ranging from "Arts and Literature" to "Politics and the State." The index at the end of volume four is thoroughly excellent, being both accurate and comprehensive, with major articles on a topic noted in bold type.

this book brings theory and practice together in a new way

Dr Peter Bruggen, Consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist and family therapist writes in the Child Psychology & Psychiatry Review, 4:1. 1999. .....I have come to dislike multi-author books.....but there is good news. In the most personally revealing chapter on the relevance of tears I found a fascinating and moving story around deaths among the original Beatles group, one of whom was the brother of one of the editors....don't miss the book.
Dr Matthew Hodes (Senior Lecturer in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, Imperial College School of Medicine, London, UK) writes in the Journal of Family Therapy. 21:4. 1999.
....The aims of this book are to build on Living Beyond Loss: Death in the Family (Walsh and McGoldrick, 1991) by linking theory and therapeutic technique. Of particular importance is the aim to make more transparent the 'reasons behind the therapist's decision to make a particular intervention at a particular time'. To put this into context, the first chapter by Walsh and McGoldrick provides a very good overview of a family systems perspective on loss, recovery and resilience. It is broad, clear and coherent in the way that one might expect of a chapter written by experts in the field. The second chapter by Sutcliffe with Tufnell is very different. It provides a fascinating and gripping account that skilfully weaves together personal experience and reflection, ideas from systems theory, especially Minuchin's structural family therapy, and psychopathology. Sutcliffe describes the effect of the death of her brother, aged 21 years, on herself and her mother. He was an early member of The Beatles pop group, and a close friend of Brian Epstein and John Lennon who also died at a young age. Their early deaths resonated throughout their linked families, and the wider social system.
Some of the other chapters take up the theme of communications, renegotiations of relationships and meanings through therapeutic encounters. Chapters that provide full accounts of therapy are by Tufnell, Cornish and Sutcliffe regarding the death of a parent with young children, Cornish on the death of pupils in schools, and Levner on the deaths of a gay couple from AIDS. .... many of the authors describe how they have been influenced by Minuchin's structural family therapy. This serves as a useful rehabilitation for structural family therapy at a time when many writers influenced by social constructionism may regard it as passe and best avoided. Here structural ideas are given a postmodern twist by the inclusion of reflexive ingredients.
A second feature is the rather idiosyncratic choice of topics. For example, while death from AIDS-related diseases has received wide coverage in the family therapy literature, the importance for family life of more common causes of death such as cancer and heart disease are neglected. Inclusion of Asen's well-written chapter on managing adolescents following deliberate self-harm, a group who rarely complete suicide and usually have low suicidal intent, was surprising. A number of important topics are not mentioned, such as selection of families and efficacy of family treatments for bereavement, choosing between therapies or combining family therapy with other therapies, and some detailed accounts of therapy with culturally different families. However, given that this is the first book of its kind to be published in the UK it is to be welcomed, and deserves to be widely read.

The title refers to the drug of choice at the multimedia events typical of Reynolds' subject: the "rave" scene, in which impressionable youngsters congregate in such roomy venues as pastures and warehouses to be musically entertained while under the influence. Rave music includes techno and several other strains, all of them electronic. Reynolds traces it from the German group Kraftwerk's "Krautrock" to disco and funk to the many rave-friendly formats extant today. Besides this music history, Reynolds discusses the panoply of rave-worthy drugs and proper rave attitude and deportment. His occasionally hyperventilating prose may discourage nonfan readers, yet this is a neat history of a cultural anomaly--a strain of pop music with a large audience but nearly no presence in the regular pop music media. And as a special bonus, Reynolds reveals why nitrous oxide is called "hippy crack." Rock journalist Reynolds (The Sex Revolts, not reviewed) chronicles how MDMA (a psychedelic amphetamine, a.k.a. ``ecstasy'') and MIDI (computer sound technology) together spawned the unique dance culture of the ``chemical generation.'' While America has never quite caught on to electronic dance music, techno and acid house have been the last decade's dominant European pop music genres. Reynolds, a writer for Rolling Stone, Spin, and iD, has been watching the scene since the late 1980s, when England, Germany, and Holland began transforming imported Detroit techno and Chicago house. Once ecstasy was introduced into British clubs, its sense-heightening and empathy-elevating effects fused with the soundtrack, becoming for house what LSD was for psychedelic rock. Reynolds, declaring a ``rockist'' bias, mostly prefers discussing recording artists, DJs, and subgenres over describing rave culture's underground dance clubs, illegal mass parties in warehouses and country fields, pirate radio stations, or the musics sociological significance. For the uninitiated, his taxonomy of acid house's descendents (Manchester indie-dance, bleep and bass, Belgian hardcore, breakbeat 'ardcore, ambient techno, trance, darkcore, Dutch gabba, happy, jungle, to name a few) may seem obsessive. This encyclopedic overview, however, dispassionately charts the inevitable rise and fall of drug-based musical fashion. As dopamine and serotonin abuse left the formerly blissed-out ravers with a need for faster tracksup to 300 bpmand additional drugs such as heroin, ketamine, and speed, the original aficionados decried the bastardization of their sound and moved on to different electronic experiments. Reynolds does have some vivid passages of field research, such as his experience of one of Spiral Tribe's 20,000-strong raves in rural Castlemorton, but they can't compare to the E-fictions of Irvine Welsh (The Acid House) or Alan Warner (Morvern Callar). Although neither Reynolds nor anyone else can predict post-rave's future, his hard-core history of its first decade is a heady remix of the soundscape's greatest hits. Excellent book for those interested in the origins of electronic ...

Excellent book for those interested in the origins of electronic dance music. Simon Reynolds, unlike many scholarly authors, writes in an engaging and personal way. He tells anecdotes from his own experiences in the dance music scene but also brings in an enormous amount of research and knowledge. There is so much good information in this book that it definitely deserves more than one reading.

Informative, but misses the audience

Most depictions of the Rave scene tend to preach from an extreme. They either present a picture of modern-day-Sodom, or will extol the discovery of Nirvana-on-Earth. Reynolds has the ability to [beautifully] describe both faces of the scene with an impartial voice.

Unfortunately, that is the end of what he has done well. Simon will take one paragraph to state that in years past the focus was simply the event, and no one bothered to learn the names of DJ's, let alone the name of individual tracks. After which he will begin a 10-page meandering description about specific track titles released in a 6-month period.

That example highlights Simon's shortcomings: no one involved in the scene at that time can recall every DJ or specific song names. Worse yet, those names are going to be meaningless to everyone reading the book in an attempt to learn about the scene.

Scenesters of the day aren't seeking a book that provides a blow-by-blow account of Simon's search for an illegal party on a particular night, they're looking to be reminded of a bygone time, feeling, and vibe they recall from those days. And people reading the book to learn about the history of "rave" are seeking to understand the human experience of the time, and not the name of a producer living in Germany who released a top-40 track at the end of the 80's.

In truth, Simon does cover enough information from front cover to back cover that the reader will indubitably have gained a clear understanding of the history of raves. Unfortunately, the reader will have to winnow through 90% fluff to reach that goal.

Good book

It can be a little in-depth sometimes, almost to the point of being inane, but the author carries the story so well, you find yourself being swept up in the madness, almost as if you were standing in the middle of the rave culture yourself.

It sheds an important light on a rarely-reported but highly relevant side of music history; a must-have for any true fan of the art.
