From Library Journal
This work contains 16 academic essays by as many authors, including Mazzio (English, Univ. of Michigan), Trevor (teaching fellow, English, Harvard), and Marjorie Garber, who edits the "Culture Work" series, of which this is the sixth book. Most of the authors are from English departments and write heady stuff, in this case contrasting and melding epistemologies of Marx and Freud to delve into 15th- and 16th-century individuality (subjectivity). Those familiar with Judith Butler, Jacques Lacan, Slavoj Zizek, and Joan Copjec, who are often referred to, will be comfortable with the language and some of the arguments. However, only general readers with backgrounds in the chapter topics (e.g., Shakespeare, Villon) or those who enjoy brilliant speculation on rarefied ideas will be rewarded. "The Inside Story" by David Hillman (the only psychologist here) concerns the boundaries of inner and outer, the spatial metaphor as found in Hamlet. This is material for historians in general and of culture and medicine in particular, as well as psychoanalytically sophisticated literary critics.DE. James Lieberman, George Washington Univ. "An original and exciting contribution to the urgent task of interrogating the political, cultural and social practices that underpin international law and the framing of the international more generally. Review
..." this is a useful and wide-ranging book that contributes to various aspects of the discussion of race. There is no other anthology like this... It is path-breaking in its demonstration that existentialism can be applied, historicized, concretized, and above all, that philosophy of existence is alive and well with a future as well as a past."
-"Teaching Philosophy
"Lewis Gordon has edited an impressive anthology within a specialized area of philosophy ... [T]his is a great resource."

AN INTERESTING COLLECTION OF ESSAYS ON EXISTENTIALIST PHILOSOPHY
By Steven H Propp
Lewis Ricardo Gordon (born 1962) is Professor of Philosophy at Temple University, and an Ongoing Visiting Professor of Philosophy and Government at the University of the West Indies at Mona, Jamaica. He has also written/edited An Introduction to Africana Philosophy (Cambridge Introductions to Philosophy), Existentia Africana: Understanding Africana Existential Thought (Africana Thought), and Bad Faith and Antiblack Racism.

Contributors include Bernard Boxill, Naomi Zack, Howard McGary, and Joy James, as well as Gordon himself. Gordon notes in the Introduction to this 1997 collection, "I should like to stress that not all of the contributors to this volume are black existentialists in any sense. This volume raises questions of black existential philosophy, and in that regard, some of the individuals who have something to say of value on that subject are also those who are most critical of it, or at least suspicious of an existential philosophy premised on what Fanon calls ... the lived-experience of the black. Such is the case."

Here are some quotations from the book:

"On balance the African response to this existential situation was a positive one. It was able to affirm and empower agency in spite of anxieties of fate. Existence was grounded in an ordered cosmos, which had a specific niche for human beings." (Pg. 23)
"In my view, Afro-Caribbean existential philosophy will not achieve the self-consciousness it requires without a fuller coming to terms with its African roots. In doing so, it will not only creolize itself, but also the larger discourse of Caribbean philosophy." (Pg. 35)
"Stated more bluntly, this means that blacks must first save themselves from the debilitating effects of their inherited folk religion if they are to achieve liberating self-transformation." (Pg. 47)

Selling the Holocaust: From Auschwitz to Schindler; How History is Bought, Packaged and Sold, by Tim Cole

Cole shows us an "Auschwitz-land" where tourists have become the "ultimate ruberneckers" passing by and gazing at someone else's tragedy. He shows us a US Holocaust Museum that provides visitors with a "virtual Holocaust" experience.

From Publishers Weekly
In 1997, the Bee Gees toured Anne Frank's house in Amsterdam, along with 700,000 other bubble-gum chewing, minicam-clutching voyeurs. A man was spotted at Auschwitz wearing, with supreme irony, a Megadeth T-shirt. Gifted with a sensitive understanding of the Holocaust, Cole, history professor at the University of Bristol, sets out to parse the shifting myths created from the historical event of the Holocaust, especially its morphing into a ubiquitous, feel-good affirmation of America's core values. In seeking to understand the subtle implications of marketing remembrance, Cole focuses on three figuresAAnne Frank, Adolph Eichmann and Oskar SchindlerAand three sitesAAuschwitz, Yad Vashem (Israel's Holocaust museum in Jerusalem) and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. What does it mean when Schindler's List becomes a de facto primary historical text, or when the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (where Cole is a visiting fellow) is just one more item on an itinerary that includes the peep show thrills of the Texas Book Depository and Graceland? At a time when tourists flock to the Spielberg film location rather than to the actual ghetto, argues Cole, the Holocaust has been turned into a sort of virtual history. Cole's book makes an excellent complement to Peter Novick's superb The Holocaust in American Life (Forecasts, May 3), with which it shares an informed wariness about the perils of historical representation. (Sept.)

From Kirkus Reviews
A thoughtful and brave study of how the Holocaust has become an overly central myth and too commercialized for its own effectiveness. Cole is a fellow at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum and is well positioned to know that there is no business like Shoah (Holocaust) business. The book grew from lectures at the University of Bristol in England, whence its youthful brazenness to criticize the sacrosanct. Holocaustism as an industry is shown to dwarf the budget of other, especially educational needs in the American Jewish community. The three people whom the first chapters are named for reflect Coles vision of Holocaust history. First is Anne Frank, the most famous child and victim in our century. In 1947, long before her book, Broadway show, and Amsterdam attic became global sensations, the diary's modest popularity reflected the Jewish and gentile mood that the unspeakable tragedy was best not spoken about. Even in Israel, where the Holocaust became a flag of victimhood and cause for national survival, the yet unnamed calamity was associated with the powerless Diaspora past and neglecteduntil the capture and trial of Adolf Eichmann (Cole's second chapter). Not mere revenge, this ``trial was about reawakening a concern with the Holocaust both inside and outside the country.'' So successful was exhuming the Holocaust from buried memory that the next chapter, ``Oskar Schindler,'' shows how Hollywood turned planet Auschwitz into a well known but more benign place. The last three chapters are named for places, ``Auschwitz,'' ``Yad Vashem,'' and ``The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum,'' where Cole scores salient points contrasting the sites of genocide (now with tourist cafeteria), the Israeli museum (emphasizing partisans and resistance), and the ``theme-park'' $168-million-dollar facility in Washington, D.C. (featuring multimedia experiences and nondenominational tolerance). Cole dares to write ``that an element of voyeurism is central to Holocaust tourism. Provocative...It is hard to argue with Coles assertion that the worldwide image of the Holocaust is now being made in America. -- The Washington Post Book World
Gifted with a sensitive understanding of the Holocaust, Cole sets out to parse the shifting myths of the Holocaust, especially its morphing into a ubiquitous, feel-good affirmation of Americas core values...[Selling the Holocaust] makes an excellent complement to Peter Novicks superb The Holocaust in American Life, with which it shares an informed wariness about the perils of historical representation. -- Publishers Weekly
A thoughtful and brave study of how the Holocaust has become an overly central myth and too commercialized for its own effectiveness. Cole is a fellow at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum and is well positioned to know that there is no business like Shoah (Holocaust) business...If the Holocaust has assumed our centurys moral crown, this book dares to challenge the emperors clothes. -- Kirkus Reviews
Tim Cole explores the creation and definition of a mythic Holocaust, the Holocaust as symbol divorced from the historical reality of six million murdered Jews. He argues that the veneration of the Holocaust represents an attempt to understand history, but that this attempt is often harmful and belittles the truth. -- University of Nebraska Press
An intriguing book that raises many issues. -- Jewish Book World

Don't confuse Holocaust with "Holocaust" in your marketing.
By John Barry Kenyon
In a careful analysis, Tim Cole suggests that the actual holocaust is not be confused with the atrocities depicted in museums and movies. He argues, for example, that the movie Schindler's List blurs historical reality by emphasizing the "goodness" of Schindler himself and the happy outcome for the Jewish captives in his Czech factory in 1945. We all have to feel fine when leaving the cinema. Actually, much the same could be said about other movies not considered by Cole, for example Triumph of the Spirit which recounts the survival at Auschwitz of a Greek boxer. The author also feels that the establishment of so many holocaust memorials and museums may actually stimulate Revisionism by allowing holocaust deniers to pinpoint inaccuracies, for example of the Auschwitz (One) gas chamber is indeed a post war reconstruction for tourists. There is much well researched detail in this book, for example on Anne Frank whose Amsterdam house has become just another site for the curious and on Oskar Schindler himself who fled at the end of the war with his wife and mistress (contrary to the movie portrayal). It is Cole's honesty in showing up many holocaust myths that makes the book a convincing read. He is no apologist for nazi crimes, but he has opened an important debate about perception and reality in the mass media.

How history is portrayed
By Philip Greenspan
"Selling the Holocaust" is an excellent study of how history is presented. While Tim Cole uses the Holocaust as the subject for this particular study what he shows is how history generally develops at various times and in various places.
History-at any particular time and place--is a refining and processing of pertinent facts with the cultural values of the existing establishment that creates a `myth' of the historic reality. Different times in the same place or different places at the same time result in varying `myths'.
The subtitle of the book--"From Auschwitz to Schindler, How History is Bought, Packaged and Sold"-is most appropriate in expressing this manipulation of historic events to conform to a particular country's existing policies.
Cole analyzes six subjects for illustration: the diary of Anne Frank; the trial of Adolf Eichmann; Steven Sondheim's film "Schindler's List"; the concentration camp at Auschwitz; the Israeli memorial of Yad Vashem; and the Holocaust museum in Washington, D.C.
By exploring each, he shows us that in different places (Israel, United States, Poland) and at different times (post World War II, post six-day war, `80s, `90s) the Holocaust has been interpreted and portrayed differently. The cultural values of each unique time and place determine how we perceive the Holocaust.
This is obviously a study of how all of history is revealed. Events looked at in distant places and times acquire different meanings-often at variance with what actually occurred. Writers who challenge conventional history by disclosing the truth are usually criticized as revisionists and are reviled and disregarded by the establishment.
This analysis is obviously in conflict with the author's message and with other readers' interpretations. Nevertheless, it relies on six excellent case studies for validation.

The Gradual Development of the Holocaust "Myth"
By Jan Peczkis
Cole traces the development of popularization of the Holocaust in the US, Israel, and in other parts of the world. He uses the term "myth" not to question the fact of 5-6 million murdered Jews in any way, but to point out the gradual emergence of the Holocaust in much contemporary thinking. Cole (p. 6) quotes Yaffa Eliach on the fact that "there is no business like Shoah business."

In common with other writers (e. g., Novick, Finkelstein), Cole points out that there was little special attention paid to the WWII extermination of Jews, by either Jews or gentiles, in the first years after the war: "While the Holocaust was perpetrated in Europe during 1941-45, it was not really until the early 1960s that anything like widespread awareness of the `Holocaust' began to emerge."(p. 7). Also: "During the 1940s and 1950s, throughout Israeli society, there was an effective silence about the Holocaust."(pp. 51-52). Finally, "After 1961 the Holocaust ceased to be a taboo, and instead assumed an increasingly central--if contested--position in Israeli society and politics."(p. 63).

Cole concludes: "There is little question that in the 1970s and 1980s the `Holocaust' assumed a critical role in self-definition as Jewish." (p. 13). In fact, he also shows that the Holocaust had become a substitute for Jewish tradition, for self-identity as Jews, among many assimilated American Jews (pp. 118-119).

By the 1990's, the Holocaust had assumed nothing short of staggering dimensions on the American scene: "...in the United States there are more than one hundred Holocaust museums and research centres, suggesting that the `founding of Holocaust museums' is `a particularly American phenomenon.'"(p. 147).

Cole devotes a moderate amount of attention to the Auschwitz Carmelite convent controversy. For a long time, Christian symbols in Jewish places of death had not aroused Jewish antagonism at all (p. 103). He also points out the fact that, ironically, Auschwitz itself had assumed a prominent place in Jewish Holocaust consciousness only gradually: "From being a site of Warsaw bloc memory of fascist atrocity, `Auschwitz' became recognized not simply as a site of the mass gassing of Jews, but the site of Jewish memory of the `Holocaust'. Yet alongside this `Jewish Holocaustisation' of Auschwitz, a process of `Catholising' Auschwitz started to take place, in particular centered on the Polish-Catholic martyr Father Maximilian Kolbe."(pp. 102-103). Cole continues: "What was being contested during the controversy was less ownership and use of the physical fabric of the camp, and more ownership and use of the `brandname''Auschwitz'."(p. 105).

Cole (p. 108) then recounts Cardinal Glemp's suggested compromise solution: Oswiecim-Auschwitz, where mostly Poles died, would be central to Poles and Christians, while Brzezinka-Birkenau, where mostly Jews died, would be central to Jews. However, most Jews rejected this compromise solution on the grounds that it would impinge upon the symbolic status of Auschwitz. What is unclear in all of this is how the fact that 90% of the victims of the entire Auschwitz complex were Jews is supposed to entitle them to dictate to everyone else how and how not the site of the Auschwitz complex is to be memorialized. It is easy to see that all the talk about the Jewish victims of Auschwitz being forgotten, or about Auschwitz becoming "Christianized", are simply smokescreens. The real reason clearly is Jewish intolerance against the sufferings of non-Jews being associated, even indirectly, with the sufferings of Jews. As further proof of this, note Cole's citation of Israeli philosopher Adi Ophir on the latter's statements concerning the Holocaust becoming a religion of sorts that supplants the Ten Commandments: "...Holocaust religion offers new commandments:'Thou shalt have no other Holocaust', `Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image or likeness", Thou shalt not take the name in vain'. .."(p. 143). No wonder that there was so much Jewish opposition to the Carmelite convent at Auschwitz! Its very presence dared juxtapose the Polish Holocaust with that the Jewish Holocaust, thereby violating the first and third of these new commandments!

Cole describes Holocaust education in contemporary Israel as follows: "Not only do they have `Holocaust' lessons at school--where `since the early 1980s, questions on the Holocaust have accounted for 20 per cent of the overall score in the high school diploma examination in history'--but as mentioned earlier they all visit Yad Vashem, and an increasing number visit the death camps in Europe."(p. 141). In view of this intense education, the ignorance of Israeli students who visit Poland is unbelievable (unless, of course, it is intentional). Cole does not mention the fact that visiting Israeli students hold to grotesque Polonophobic errors, even to the point of believing that Poles killed more Jews than the Germans, and asking, in all seriousness, about the size of pensions "those Polish guards at Auschwitz" are receiving. What kind of education are these young Israelis truly getting?

Review
Gronstedt's Customer Century breaks new ground in the quest for a strategic approach to all corporate communications. The illustrative examples throughout his book give the reader a real sense of what is happening in companies worldwide as we move from the production century to the aptly named century of the customer. -- Paul A. Argenti, author of Corporate Communication and professor at Dartmouth's Tuck School
Gronstedt's book is easy and inspiring to read--if you read it and can't find ten good ideas that you will adopt in your organization, you ought to change your job! -- Lars Goran Johansson, Sr. Vice President of Corporate Communications, Electrolux
As an advocate of Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC), the two questions I'm most frequently asked are 'Who's doing this now?' and 'How do you get started?' Anders Gronstedt answers both questions in The Customer Century. He tells you exactly what to do to build more profitable customer relationships through IMC. -- Robert F. Lauterborn, professor at the University of North Carolina and coauthor of Integrated Marketing Communications
The Customer Century and its insights into customer-centered enterprises like Hewlett-Packard and FedEx show not only that integrated communication can be achieved, but that it absolutely must be achieved to make a real difference for your company. -- Don Peppers, partner, Peppers and Rogers Group, and co-author with Dr. Martha Rogers of The One to One Future and The One to One Manager
Gronstedt's book brilliantly captures how to jump-start the change processes for building customer value and successful brands. This thought-provoking treatise on the new strategic role of communication should be required reading for any executive striving to succeed in the Customer Century. -- Don Schultz, professor at Northwestern University and coauthor of Communicating Globally: An Integrated Marketing Approach
Gronstedt gives powerful, case study evidence that integrated marketing communication goes a lot deeper than having ads, publicity and promotion carry the same message points. It is a philosophy that permeates organizations from CEO to frontline workers. The quotations from corporate leaders alone are worth the price of the book. -- Pat Jackson, President, Jackson, Jackson and Wagner
Grondstedt insightfully contrasts the difference between the old marketing/communication ideas appropriate to Production Century with the new integrated marketing and communication ideas appropriate to the coming Customer Century. And he illustrates, in excellent detail, the marketing/communication and management practices of leading 3-D companies, such as Xerox, HP, FedEx, and Saturn. Any manager could take away a dozen ideas from reading this book. -- Philip Kotler, Kellogg Graduate School of Management Northwestern University
Through a series of case studies of 14 international companies, the author provides genuine insight into the philosophy and practices of companies that have adopted integrated marketing communications to enhance the profitability of their customer base. This work is well organized and easy to read. SR Kahn, U of Cincinnati in CHOICE.
Gronstedt is putting the old guard of 'Production Century' managers on alert: Integrate communications with your most strategic customers and stakeholders or your business will become road kill in the new century. This invaluable primer for marketing, communication and general managers is bulging with case studies and hands-on advice for how to succeed in the Customer Century. -- Daniel Burrus, author of Technotrends

Lots of good ideas from world-class companies
By Winter Wright
I work as a consultant for a PR agency, so I'm supposed to know what is "best practice" in the realm of communications. This book compiles real-world examples from a dozen European and U.S.-based companies that seem to be getting it right: FedEx, Hewlett-Packard, GM Saturn, ABB, and others.
My principal interest in the book was in finding a source of good ideas that I can adapt for use by clients, and I was not disappointed. Anyone in a communications role, whether in-house or outsourced, can benefit by taking some of these ideas and adapting them to the particular needs of their own organization.
The book is especially helpful in getting around a dilemma frequently faced by consultants (internal or external) who are called upon to produce so-called creative ideas, i.e., if you propose something that's really provocative and different---outside the box, as they say---the first thing your client often wants to know is, "Where has this worked before?" Of course, if what you've proposed is truly creative and original, it may not have been tried before---a perfect reason for the client to shoot it down.
By drawing liberally from the ideas set forth in this book, you can come up with good creative PR and internal communications programs that have actually been put into practice by well-known companies. For example, when Saturn had to recall some of its cars to fix a defect, it basically turned the event into a party: car owners were invited to a Thai barbecue while mechanics spent 30 minutes fixing their Saturns. They even got a free car wash to boot. This example is a perfect illustration of a basic truth of PR, i.e., that crisis communications is not simply about damage control. Handled properly, a crisis can be an opportunity to get your customer to see your brand in a whole new light.
Another nice feature of the book is that much of it focuses on internal communication. Gronstedt uses a three-part model (he's a former academic, so he likes models, but don't worry: there's only one, and his writing is lively and clear) to describe communications, and one part consists of External relations, including media relations. But the other two parts are Vertical and Horizontal communications, both of which take place within the organization ("vertical" referring to communications that go up and down the chain of command and "horizontal" meaning communications that cut across different functions or business groups). This emphasis on internal communications gives an enlightened perspective that gets away from the one-way, press agentry model of PR that relies predominantly on placing stories about your company in the newspaper.
So read the book, mark the ideas and best practices of these world-class companies, and then adapt them for your own use. It's a great resource for anyone responsible for organizational communications.

Convincing case for integrated communication
By Göran Thorstenson
I don't know of any other book that makes such a convincing case for integrated communication as "The Customer Century". Almost every thesis from the author is illustrated with examples from the real world of real companies. The messages of this book underline that creating individual relations with stakeholders (such as customers, shareholders, employees or journalists) won't be possible without using the Internet. And at the same time, using the web will only be successful in the long run, when it's part of an integrated communication strategy. I would most certainly recommend this book to colleagues, clients and our employees.

Fascinating insights and useful framework
By Frank D. Durham
This is the most comprehensive book I've come across on how to strategically managing communications at every point of contact with customer and stakeholders. Gronstedt has written a practical book that provides fascinating insights into the inner workings of companies like Saturn, HP and FedEx. The examples are woven together into a "3D" model of integrated communications, which is a very useful framework for analyzing organizational communications. I'm really looking forward to sharing this book with my the communication classes at the University of Iowa.

Using Women: Gender, Drug Policy, and Social Justice, by Nancy Campbell

From the 1950s 'girl junkie' to the 1990s 'crack mom', Using Women investigates how the cultural representations of women drug users have defined America's drug policies in this century. In analyzing the public's continued fear, horror and outrage wrought by the specter of women using drugs, Nancy Campbell demonstrates the importance that public opinion and popular culture have played in regulating women's lives. The book will chronicle the history of women and drug use, provide a critical policy analysis of the government's drug policies and offer recommendations for the direction our current drug policies should take. Using Women includes such chapters as 'Sex, Drugs and Race in the Age of Dope'; 'Regulating Adolescents in the Postwar US'; 'Fifties Femininity'; and 'Regulating Maternal Instinct'.

Review
With wit and tenacity, Nancy Campbell uncovers the surprisingly long historical road of drug policy leading directly to the racialized profile and exploding numbers of today's population of incarcerated women. Using Women powerfully demonstrates how to engage in public policy debates without remaining captive to the governing mentalities that shape the neoliberal state.

Review
This elegant, engaging book by eminent social analyst Steven Seidman imaginatively charts the rise and demise of the era of the closet in gay history and politics...Eschewing polemics and posturing, Beyond the Closet provides a perfect antidote to mental mildew. -- Judith Stacey, author of In the Name of the Family
Seidman's analysis of the closet, its dimensions, characteristics, and effects on its inhabitants is thoughtful and compelling. As a sociologist, Seidman has important insights to share on the way people adapt to their 'closets,' and how human identities are largely reactive and contextual. -- Lambda Book Report
[A]n easily digested recent history of the gay movement...dips into popular culture and coming out stories to analyze the astonishingly swift changes in the quality of queer life. -- The Montreal Gazette
Seidman's new book is perfectly constructed with just the right dosage of history and sociology...What makes this book invaluable, among other qualities, is Seidman's courageous non-avoidance of a key question. -- Cercles
The moment of the closet may now have passed, but as Seidman shows, it continues to shadow many lives. However, the life chances of lesbians and gays have changed dramatically in recent years because of profound cultural changes in gay life and in wider patterns of intimacy. Seidman powerfully captures these changes, by allowing the voices of gays themselves to lead the presentation. The book vibrates with eloquence, pain, and passion. It combines rich interview material with a subtle but clear theoretical underpinning. This is a book both readable and illuminating. -- Jeffrey Weeks, author of Same Sex Intimacies: Families of Choice and Other Life Experiences
Ambitious and important. Seidman makes a crucial contribution to understanding sexual citizenship in the 21st century. -- Steven Epstein author of Impure Science: AIDS, Activism and the Politics of Knowledge
Steven Seidman's Beyond the Closet offers us a much-needed way out for achieving equality for gay people. His analysis is radical in spirit, yet conciliatory in style. This important book deserves a wide audience. -- Martin Duberman, Professor of History at CUNY and author of Cures: A Gay Man's Odyssey
Seidman suggests there's been a profound shift in the meaning of gay and lesbian life. America has changed, calling into question the dominance of the closet and the division between the 'good heterosexual' and the 'polluted queer.' This is a powerful argument, theoretically sophisticated, empirically based, and compelling. -- Arlene Stein, author of Sex and Sensibility: Stories of a Lesbian Generation
