A Very Abridged and Superficial "Atlas"

First of all, the title is very misleading. This is in no way an atlas "of the American Railroads." It is at best a superficial sketch book of a FEW American railroads. Too many major railroads are never mentioned at all. Of those that are included, historical narrative occupies no more than two pages each. The "Chronology" section on pages 130 through 133 does not even list the beginning or the completion of the first transcontinental railroad. The charts on page 127 showing the buy-outs and mergers resulting in today's "big four" roads are woefully incomplete; for example, the Santa Fe is shown as a component of today's BNSF, but all the various roads that were assimilated into the Santa Fe are omitted.
Even though the book purports to cover "railroads in the 1990s," it does not list, map or discuss any of the numerous (and relatively profitable) regional roads that have been created from cast-off routes of the Class 1 roads.
For anyone who is at all familiar with the history of American railroading, this book is far too superficial and incomplete to offer much knowledge of any value. For someone who is ignorant of the subject and wants a solid grounding in it, the book's brevity and many omissions also cause it to be of little value. Perhaps, as another reviewer has already noted, the book would be useful for youthful students learning the techniques of research at elementary or junior high school level. The information in the book is valid, just not adequately comprehensive for serious, adult research into American railroads.
Like the textual material, the maps are useful in visualizing the geographical areas which the included railroads occupied but are not sufficiently detailed to be of much help to an advanced researcher. They did help this "geographically challenged" reader better grasp the general location of some roads whose names were familiar but whose locations were vague.
The concept of the book was potentially excellent. While most of the well-known railroads in American history have had a plethora of both popular and scholarly books written about them, having one source that would present an abbreviated, chapter-length history of each would have been very handy. Add to that the recent histories of contemporary regional and short-line roads that have not yet been chronicled and we would have had a very useful addition to the literature on the subject. In execution, however, this atlas falls far short of the promise of its title. In final conclusion, I am forced to observe that it adds nothing to the extant literature and therefore really has no reason to exist.

Great New Railroad Book

If you are interested in American History (especially the development of the West), Business History, maps and atlases, or (most importantly) railroads, I believe that this is a book that belongs in your library.
The Smithsonian did a book of railroad maps a few years ago which was long on art and low on information; this book is packed with useful information and the maps are well-done. A complete set of maps shows how the US was developed (from East to West) with the help of the railroads, and the role the railroads played in opening up the interior, in the Civil War, WWII, etc.
This thorough section is then followed by excellent maps of the largest and most important rail systems. While you could find maps of each line in old railway guides or bargain books, none are of the quality and consistency of these maps. Stover, an eminent rail historian, adds a brief text history on each line. (though the definitive book on that is still the Trains magazine guide to Historical Railroads).
For those interested in business history, you cannot beat studying the rails, which were to late 19th century US what Microsoft and Intel are today. The story of the rails covers the rise, fall, and rebirth of this critical industry.
I have been waiting for this book for many years. It fills a long-vacant position in any good rail library, and teaches about history and business as well. The paperback is also one of the rare bargains in railroad books.

Thoroughly explained - Excellent book

I read this book cover to cover.

There is so much history in the book, well explained, it made me see how far back we have have been dealing with injustice across the world.

Prejudice, discrimination, oppression in all it's forms throughout the ages, including issues related to race, religion, gender and more. Every chapter is bringing historical facts making us realize how we are the way we are, and how we can learn to change this behavior.

Learning the roots of the problems is key, and this book does an excellent job at describing every aspect of our social backgrounds.

Definitely an important book to take into the classroom and a definite read for those of you who want to be part of the change.

The title of this book makes for me some misunderstanding: there are many words but generally not about music. These words are about performance practice and recording problems. I think this book is interesting primarily for those who concern performance practice and recording history of 1930-50s by HMV (EMI now). The book contains some Legge's articles from magazines and many letters and telegrams to and from prominent musicians such as Beecham, Furtwangler, Karajan and others. It's a mosaic of impressions, events, thoughts, directives, reminiscences but not a continued story. If you like it you may try this book.

Very thorough!!

This book is great!! I used it to write my final for my Western civilizations class in college. It was on the Black Death, and the Hundred Year's war. It had lots of great info on those subjects. I recommend this book highly for school, or fun.

Easy to enjoy

The book is not an ornate description of the late middle ages. Rather it attempts to seive data into an outline of what life might have been at the time. At times the data, which should have taken the form of footnotes, becomes the body of the text. Fortunately, this does not happen often. The "Plague" section is a bit amiss with outstreached consequences of the plague, but is nonetheless revealing: I, for one, learned that there were 3 kinds of plagues, the bubonic, pneumonic and septicemic rather than a single sweeping disease. Aberth contends that the Plague claimed more victims than the standard 1/3 demographic decline figure. All in all there is plenty here for a medievalist to keep themselves entertained. I would also recomend, perhaps, reading this in conjunction w/ the video series written and hosted by Simon Schama "A History of Britain".

This book is a collection of 11 high quality articles, most by anthropologists, that brings a variety of approaches to the study of the relation of spirit possession to history in the islands of the Pacific Basin. The authors situate their studies in Samoa, Tonga, Nukulaelae (Tuvalu), Anuta (Solomon Islands), Rotuma (Fiji), Dadul (Papua New Guinea), Chuuk (Federated States of Micronesia), and South Sulawesi (Indonesia). Fortunately, the editors provide a map of the Pacific Basin, without which this reader, at least, would have been at sea. The aim of the collection "is to examine the changing roles that gods and spirits have played in various cultures, relating them on the one hand to specific historical and cultural contexts, and on the other to cultural and psychological universals" (2). I will say emphatically that the lead article, "Gods, Spirits, and History: A Theoretical Perspective," by Robert I. Levy, Mageo, and Howard (11-27), should be required reading for anyone undertaking work on spirit possession. Among the issues that Levy et al. discuss is the difference between gods and spirits. While this differs from culture to culture, their conclusions are that gods represent and participate in mainstream morality and social institutions, are mediated by high-status priests, are subject to manipulation through praise, supplication, and gift giving, and are more distant from sensual and other kinds of personal experience, while spirits are inherently more dangerous, are comparatively free from the control of hegemonic institutions, are mediated by people of ordinary or low status, have the power to possess, enter or contaminate people, are more likely to engender disease and disorder, and exist in the margins of human social and epistemological order. Two topics recur through many of the articles: (1) the effect of modernity on belief in spirits and on possession, particularly because of the modifying influence of modernity on performance modes, and (2) the effects of Christianity. On many of the islands possession has been on the decrease as lifestyles have changed due to the pressures of both modernization and Christianity. However, the Christian Church has not always been effective in eradicating beliefs in local spirits. In other cases, the Church has not even attempted to eradicate beliefs in local spirits. In short, this volume is an important addition to the field of possession studies.

Good collection, geographically limited

This is a fine collection of articles on spirit beliefs in the Pacific, even if the empirical studies contradict the assertions of the introductory essay. The introduction claims that gods and spirits are distinguishable along a continuum, but the facts here, and elsewhere, suggest otherwise. There is no dividing line, or even dividing spectrum, between gods and spirits. The very concepts may be culture-bound Western ones. Sometimes what they call "gods" are highly personal, sometimes not. Sometimes they are moral, sometimes not. In the end, there is nothing that distinguishes them except the Western/Christian meanings of the terms.

That said, the case studies are very well done and interesting. They raise many valuable points about belief, history, and cultural integration. If only this or a similar compilation went beyond the Pacific and looked at spirit/god beliefs in a truly global perspective.

The scholarship displayed in this collection is superb, and I would _highly_ recommend this book for both academic and recreational reading. Its presentation is masterful, its individual essays highly informative and superlatively written, and its central theme(s) strong and clear. Anyone with even a passing interest in folk religions, psychological anthropology, or simply cultures in general will benefit a great deal from this text.
