Review
Its theoretical significance lies in presuming the historical specificity and social construction of self to disrupt binary opposites and use gender as a tool for historical inquiry. -- Technology and Culture, July 2002
Boys and Their Toys? is another fine volume in the Hagley series and a valuable addition to the literature on masculinity. Those familiar with this rapidly developing area of research will find new insights about the interplay between gender and class identities, and the meanings of and elusive boundaries between work and play, and tools and toys. -- Ava Baron, editor of Work Engendered
This sterling collection falls together like a kaleidoscopic pattern to reveal a rich and nuanced tale of life on the shop floor. Each essay reveals the shaping power of particular kinds of male behavior and of the images embedded in the male imagination. I remain astonished at what an illuminating experience this is. -- Alice Kessler-Harris, author of In Pursuit of Equity
Boys and Their Toys? invites us to think about the making of men in a fresh new way -- masculinity is constructed not only through our relations with one another, but in the things we make, the places we make them, and the ways those places are organized. This collection gives an exciting solidity to our understanding of the historical construction of gender. -- Michael Kimmel, author of Manhood in America
Boys and Their Toys? brings to life the worlds of male work and play, so often sanitized in our histories. Labor and social historians never again will be able to think about work and workers without taking into account gender, not only for women but for men and boys, too. -- Joshua B. Freeman, author of Working Class New York
Boys and Their Toys? is a valuable contribution to the evolving literature on the construction of masculinity, demonstrating through a wide variety of historical case studies that masculinity is anything but monolithic. -- Arwen P. Mohun, author of Steam Laundries
This fine new volume, the second in the Hagley Perspectives on Business and Culture series, opens with a tale of intellectual progress...The methodological approaches to masculinity, class, and technology exhibited in Boys and Their Toys? reveal just how far we have come in the past ten years (p.1). The collection certainly demonstrates the tremendous expansion of historical research on American men, manhood, and masculinity. -- Enterprise & Society, Rebecca Herzig, Bates College
As Horowitz argues in the introduction, conceptions of gender arise out of a subtle interplay of discourse and social experience. How we think, write, or talk about gender and how we live it in specific contexts are not isolated but interactive. -- Elliott J. Gorn, Brown University

A Good Collection of Essays on Gender and Technology
By Roger D. Launius
"Boys and their Toys," a great title that describes well the subject of this book, is a collection of essays on originally presented at a conference at the Hagley Museum. All of the essays present aspects of technology and masculinity and focus at some level on the role of the workplace. Divided into three major sections--"Manhood in the Workplace," "Learning to Be Men," and "Manhood at Play"--it offers ten chapters on a range of subjects. All of these essays present interesting perspectives on the role of gender in technology and society. Among my personal favorites are Janet Davidson's "`Now We Have Girls in the Office': Clerical Work, Masculinity, and the Refashioning of Gender in a Bureaucratic Age," which explores how the addition of women as office workers in the railroads affected the workplace. She found that male clerks, which had previously enjoyed a close relationship to the masculine work of railroaders on the line not had to find new ways to separate themselves from the women in the office who performed similar work. Hierarchies emerged and efforts to eliminate women from the railroad offices also took place after World War I.

Likewise, Ben Shackleford's essay, "Masculinity, the Auto Racing Fraternity, and the Technological Sublime: The Pit Stop as a Celebration of Social Roles," is a fascinating explication of how the rituals of stock car racing have evolved over time, the role of women in it, and the nature of gender in work and play. His discussion of masculine behavior in auto racing, the choreography of the pit stop, and controlled violence of high speed racing is both illuminating and thought provoking.

Overall, this is a very interesting and instructive volume. Enjoy!

Prom Night: Youth, Schools and Popular Culture, by Amy L. Best

Best shows us that, while the prom is often trivialized, most kids take the prom seriously. The prom is a space where kids work through their understanding of authority, social class, gender norms, and multicultural schooling. Proms are more than just pictures and puffed sleeves--they are a mythic part of youth culture and, for better or worse, will always be a night to remember.

From Library Journal
For many, the prom is the highlight of their high school senior year. For others, it is a time of expectations, transitions, and transformations. Best (sociology, San Jose State Univ.) looks at students' prom experiences and the impacts they have had on their lives. She also examines the prom as a cultural icon, exploring its role within popular movies, the development of magazines surrounding the prom experience, and how the prom has changed in history. The author interviews students of different cultural and sexual identities and concludes that many feel that the prom is a "white" experience that ignores cultural differences and students with different gender identities. She also discusses how schools try to control the prom experience by, for instance, keeping students away from alcohol and other negative influences. One school even has students fill in a form, providing information on whom they will attend the prom with, for faculty approval. Best provides an interesting sociological study of the prom experience that will find a home in American studies, women's studies, and sociology collections.DDanna Bell-Russel, Library of Congress

From Booklist
Prom is an event that almost all girls dream about attending during their years in high school. Parents, friends, and the media help to hype this end-of-the-school-year tradition. Best effectively combines interviews with students and school officials, alongside reviews of Hollywood and other media portrayals of the prom, to describe an event that is considered to be the culmination of one's high-school career. Although the prom has evolved over the latter half of the twentieth century from being the first opportunity to play an adult role, e.g., wearing make-up and staying out late, into a chance to display wealth and social status, it is still considered by many to be an important rite of passage into adulthood. Prom Night is a collection of first-person accounts about the preparations, the event, and the after-prom parties. The schools used for this study are located mainly in the northeastern U.S. Best's study provides insight into the thoughts and dreams of today's youth. Julia Glynn

Review
A stunning example of cultural analysis that both affirms and engages the experiences of young people in a society that rarely allows them to speak or represent themselves. In this brilliant work, Best reinvents how prom night is constituted as a site of struggle, resistance, and power. This is an important book and should be read by anyone concerned about youth and the crisis of democracy.

Prom Night meets Senior Thesis
By A Customer
Don't let the pink retro cover fool you ... a bookworm in a frilly ballgown is still, well, a bookworm. Not a judgement on author Amy Best, but the ingenuity in the concept and research behind this book is really not dealt justice by the pedantic writing.
Having noticed the way the proms have taken on a life of their own since the ten or so years since I last donned a poufy pink dress, I was very eager to see what an academic study of this phenomenon. However, reading this book, I often found my fingers searching for the hard plastic comb binding often used on graduate school papers. Granted, the material in Prom Night likely did come from Best's doctoral research, but some cheekier writing is called for to keep lowly Bachelor's Degree holders like myself from being reminded of why we jumped into the commercial, instead of academic world.

A provocative and insightful analysis of the prom
By A Customer
This is an excellent book -- theoretically sophisticated but eminently readable. It takes the prom seriously as an event which is meaningful to kids and explores the way that the prom operates simultaneously as a site of social control and as an opportunity for resistance. On the former point, the author examines the way that the prom experience is mediated for kids by schools, parents, the market and popular culture in ways which reproduce and reinforce inequalities based on class, race, gender and sexuality. Further, she highlights the way that kids themselves participate in reproducing these inequalities. But she also looks to ways that kids resist all of the above, for example, through overt protest against non-inclusive proms (ie. boycott of a prom where interracial dating was prohibited), through the organization of alternate events (such as gay proms), or through symbolic acts of resistance by those who do attend (ie. girls in tuxedos). The author's analysis is particularly powerful because it is infused with respect for the kids who are the subjects of her study.

The contributors to this volume describe the many facets shamanism and depth psychology have in common: animal symbolism; recognition of the reality of the collective unconscious; and healing rituals that put therapist and patient in touch with transpersonal powers. By reintroducing the core of shamanism in contemporary form, these essays shape a powerful means of healing that combines the direct contact with the inner psyche one finds in shamanism with the self-reflection and critical awareness of modern consciousness.

The contributors' draw from experiences both inside and outside the consulting room, and with cultures that include the Lakota Sioux, and those of the Peruvian Andes and the Hawaiian Islands. The focus is on those aspects of shamanism most useful and relevant to the modern practice of depth psychology. These explorations bring the young practice of analytical psychology into perspective as part of a much more ancient heritage of shamanistic healing.

"The reader reemerges from these fascinating accounts of psychic, spiritual, and physical journey convinced of the reality of other-worlds--whether they reside in our unconscious or in a separate space-- inhabited by animal spirits and allies, gods an ancestors, and convinced too of the need (ours and theirs) to acknowledge and honor them. Unfortunately, it takes a single conversation with a dogmatically rational person to dispel this knowing, for a prevailing spell has been cast upon the lot of us that tethers us to the profane."

An always engrossing, sometimes harrowing compilation
By Brion Emde
This book is a compilation of essays on Shamanism and Jungian Psychology. Many diverse points of view are presented, from Christian mysticism to Native American visionary dance rituals.
The book is presented in four sections, which progress from the abstract to the concrete.
The essays in the first section make a convincing case that Dr. Carl Jung was a Western Shaman whose healing energies were coincident with his personal wound.
The next section, dealing with shamanic medicine, contains essays with brilliant therapeutic case studies, interpretations of animal dream symbolism, a fascinating discussion of shamanic allies and examples of the healing potential of altered states of consciousness.
The third section grounds us further with essays dealing with the realities of coping with pain, cancer, surgery, death in childbirth and loss of soul. Some of these essays were difficult reading, but worthwhile nonetheless.
The fourth section, the most amazing of all, takes us into the physical experience of shamanic visionary states. Essays include: shamanic practices of a Native American tradition, a visionary Big Dream in the Christian mystical tradition, a participation in the modern counterpart of an ancient sacrificial ritual and worship of the Goddess Pele in a Hawaiian volcano.
This diverse book is a marvel, bringing together the ancient and modern, weaving them with the thread of Jungian thought and spirit. It is a worthy addition to the library of anyone interested in Shamanism, Jungian Psychology and mystical experience.

Great book, a must!!!!!
By Erike Apolinar Velarde
This is a great book. If you are a counselor, psychologist or social worker and would like to know a little bit more on how traditional healing works, here is a pretty good place to start! The book is easy to read and is accesible to anyone, regardless of past experience or cotact with the topic. For all those doing work in therapy, this book will open new venues of inquiry and hopefully will get you going to research some more. If you are looking for inspirational work for your own practice, ths book will work for you as well. The book speaks directly to our core as it accounts experiences that are easily related to our collective mind as human beings.
The more books like this one, that connect spiritual dimensions into our work as counselors, the better!

Profound experiences and insights
By Richard Albert
Being interested in both Jungian psychology and Shamanism I found this book extremely interesting. It contains a series of short chapters written by various authors that represent both diversity and expertise in their fields. While showing their knowledge in their fields the individual authors relate deeply personal experiences that are very moving and thought provoking. The order of the chapters is well thought out and each of them has an informative intro that both prepares you for what comes next and helps tie the whole book together. At the end of each chapter there is a list of references that can further help with ones research in this and related material. Although each chapter can be read individually as one's interest is sparked, I enjoyed reading the whole book in succession.

Review
"Nancy Lopez brings us into the world of Dominican, West Indian, and Haitian American youth as they struggle to fulfill their parents' immigrant dreams while becoming 'American' in the overcrowded schools and on the mean streets of New York City. "Hopeful Girls, Troubled "Boys contributes not only to our understanding of education, but also to the changing nature of race and inequality in America today. This is an important book, one the reader will not quickly forget."
-Philip Kasinitz, author of "Caribbean New York: Black Immigrants and the Politics of Race
"Beautifully written and passionately argued, "Hopeful Girls, Troubled Boys is a major contribution to our understanding of education, the experiences of minority and immigrant youth, gender, and poverty. This should be required reading for anyone who wants to understand and improve the state of American urban education and the lives of poor minority youth."
-Mary C. Waters, author of "Black Identities: West Indian Immigrant Dreams and American Realities
"An intriguing analysis of the day-to-day practices and classroom dynamics that challenges previous educational research linking failure rates to peer, family, or community pressure. If you intend to face, rather than deny, the reality of the gender-race gap in education and the workforce, read this book."
-Mary Romero, author of "Maid in the USA: 10th Anniversary Edition
"Lopez's important book, theoretically elegant, methodologically robust, and empirically sound, furthers our understanding of the dynamics at work in one of the most interesting issues of our time. It is a substantial contribution to the sociological study of immigration, and should be read byscholars, policy makers, and the informed public interested in the so-called 'new immigration'."
-Marcelo M. Suarez-Orozco, co-editor of "Latinos: Remaking America
"Lopez book provides a realistic and in-depth examination of the life experiences that shape immigrant youth's attitudes about education. This book will be of great interest to people studying education and inequality."

race, class, and GENDER!
By Jeffery Mingo
In this book, Dr. Lopez evaluates low-income Dominican, Haitian, and West Indian students to see how gender differentiates their views of society, school, family, and the workforce. Dr. Lopez is "a subject from within": a Dominican-American who was raised under the same circumstances as her subjects.

Progressive academics have argued for years that thinkers have not produced enough theory that juggles issues of race, class, and gender. Here, those three issues are tackled. Equally important, race and class are taken into account and gender is the primary lens of analysis. This is rightfully called gender studies as both men and women are examined. Dr. Lopez observes a homogenous school, thus this book makes almost no comparisons between Caribbean Americans and European Americans.

Gender aside, this book looks at the sad state of public schools in many parts of America. Post-911, Giuliani has been embraced as "America's Mayor." However, this books points to the former mayor's assault against NYC public schools and illustrates why Black and Latino residents have historically resented him. In the school examined, teachers don't have offices. The walls are crumbling. The students don't even get textbooks. There is absolutely no mention of extracurriculars, so my guess is that they don't have any. There is more emphasis put on students' going through metal detectors than getting a good, critical education. Teachers and security guards spend more time ripping off boys' hats than making sure that they learn or feel safe.

The most important point of this book is how Dr. Lopez shows that gender matters. Women may not like police, but they are not physically assaulted by them. Women are given responsibilities at home and ordered to submit to authority and learn to exhibit the habits that teachers reward. Women value education even when they are getting shoddy ones. Women get away with antics in the class for which men are severely punished.

Many progressive readers may feel that Dr. Lopez is preaching to the choir. Race and gender are not separate worlds; they are categories that sit by each other constantly informing each other. For those who don't know this, this will be a shocker. For those who do, much of what Dr. Lopez says is nothing new. The second chapter which concerns men's fears of physical violence and women's fears of sexual stereotyping is nothing new, again.

Dr. Lopez has a purposeful project of challenging those thinkers who would say it's their own fault if Caribbean-American men and women don't succeed in American schools. I applaud her for that. However, she states that Caribbean boys don't study because they are insulted by the simpleness of the books they are given. I highly doubt that every unsuccessful male student does poorly because he is not challenged. Surely, some male students, of whatever ethnicity, would get As knowing that a 4.0 GPA from a bad school would still give them accesses to college admissions and scholarships. No such male is ever mentioned in this study. Dr. Lopez said that none of her subjects considered performing well in school as "acting white", but maybe that's an African-American concern rather than a Caribbean one. Dr. Lopez details that the streets are more important to males than the home, but this gendered divide of the public and private is a well-established topic; she never recognizes that.

Dr. Lopez puts the chapter on families after her chapters where she observes the students in class. I would have put it before so that the book had more of a chronological flow. She describes 4 classes in the chapter on girls, but only one on the chapters on boys. I am not sure to which gender this may show a partiality. Because she looks at how gender differentiates individuals in and outside of the schools, anti-sexist teacher may be frustrated by her results. Nothing is clearly spelled out to show how teachers can affect change in such a way that males start attending college as much as females. But I don't fault her for being holistic, and possibly exhaustive in her examination.

As the only Caucasian group to which the subjects have contact, they often compare themselves, and somewhat rag upon, Jews. This may feel anti-Semitic to some readers. But remember that New York City has its own unique ethnic conflicts that can't be applied to the rest of the nation. Dr. Lopez interviews many people who want to be doctors, lawyers, and Ph.D.s I love of hearing of people of color aiming high. However, I would have loved to have heard more people aiming to be teachers, business owners, or public administrators. Regardless of race, only 19% of medical school applicants will get into any medical school whatsoever. I hope these subjects don't end up without a paddle. The careers cited can be just as difficult to enter as the rap world or the sports arena.

Dr. Lopez has a bright career ahead of her. Despite my critiques, I appreciated this book. I think it will be embraced by many.

Excellent academic book
By maymay
This is an excellent book in so many ways. I am an academic, and from an academic standpoint, one can tell that so much labor has been put into interviewing people, culling through the interviews and choosing interesting quotes, and putting this all together into themes. It is very well-written and easy to read. It's interesting and engaging. And it fills in a huge gap where there is virtually no research on this topic on this group in such vivid detail. This book paints a rich picture of what the daily lives of these children look like.

This engaging and witty cultural history traces the evolution of the mirror from antiquity to the present day, illustrating its journey from wondrous object to ordinary trinket. With its earliest invention, the mirror allowed us to gaze upon ourselves, bestowing a power both fascinating and terrifying.

From Publishers Weekly
Tool of the devil, luxury item, optical device, decorative accessory, humble grooming aidAthe mirror, so commonplace today, has meant many things through the ages. This erudite meditation on the development and marketing of the mirror, and on its social and psychological implications, reveals how significantly the mirror has influenced Western culture. In its capacity both to reflect and to distort, to reproduce and to fragment, the mirror profoundly changed both notions of physical space and ideas of the self. Medieval thinkers feared the mirror's power to distort and to provoke pride and vanity; later, the looking glass was considered an aid for reaching self-knowledge. At the Court of Louis XV at Versailles, mirrors made social life "a theater of reflection and artifice"; by the 18th century, "the utopia of transparency helped to foster the birth of an egalitarian ideology." Mirrors opened up dark interiors, revealing hiddenAand sometimes troublingApoints of view, enabled artists to create self-portraits and confronted individuals with modern questions of self and image. Drawing on history, philosophy, theology, art, psychology and literature, Melchoir-Bonnet establishes the mirror's central contribution to visual culture. Her decision to organize her material thematically rather than chronologically sometimes compromises the clarity of her presentation, which will appeal most readily to those with a solid background in European history and thought. Nevertheless, this beautifully illustrated study offers so many intriguing glimpses into the meanings of reflection that it will reward anyone who peers beneath its surface.

From Booklist
Imagine life without mirrors. It wasn't long ago that only the wealthy could check their appearances, Melchoir-Bonnet explains in this brisk, surprising, and enjoyable history. She describes the small and precious polished stone and metal mirrors of antiquity and the crafting of the first sizable glass mirrors in sixteenth-century Venice, where a mirror cost nearly three times as much as a painting by Raphael. Mirrors quickly became all the rage among European nobility, and Melchoir-Bonnet relates some amazing tales of industrial espionage and skullduggery associated with France's effort to establish its own mirror-making factories to meet the decadent demands of Louis XIV. Melchoir-Bonnet also explores the profound symbolism associated with the looking glass in a richly metaphorical inquiry that illuminates the realms of religion, magic, philosophy, literature, art, and science. Socrates encouraged people to learn from what they saw in the mirror; the church warned against vanity and lasciviousness; while writers and artists celebrated beauty even as they pondered the pitfalls of illusion and the valuing of image over substance. A deep look into humanity
By David C. C. Matthew
The first half of this wonderful short book is about art and mirrors, very insightful on both topics. The second half is a treasure of the philosophy, religious impact, and, over all, the psychology of mirrors. It will have you thinking and re-reading for a long time

A history of the mirror in France
By Pat Lamken
Even though mirrors are a commonplace of everyday life and an essential part of modern technology, suprisingly little has been written about them, making this charming little book a welcome addition. It might more accurately have been subtitled "A history of the mirror in France" since it concentrates almost exclusively on that country. Subjects include the manufacture of mirrors, their use in decoration, art, literature, theology, and most especially their psychological effect on self-image - and of course their erotic implications. The author says virtually nothing about optics or technology, and the illustrations are few and poorly done. This is not a must-have book, but if you are interested in mirrors, French culture, or cultural history, it is worth reading, and would be an appropriate gift for the mirror-obsessed individual in your family.

Gem of deep color
By Sunny Sage
For anyone given to introspection, this is a gem. It exposes places in the heart by sourced authors from centuries ago, when human nature was far more commonly understood than it is today. The corporate rivalries in seventeenth century Europe are of interest if only to show that commerce flourished without the gasoline engine, air freight, UPS, or asphalt roads. And rivalries the size of Microsoft/Apple are not new. I enjoyed this book immensely.

had to read the propaganda laced book for graduate class. I see some points, yet it was too extreme.

The Criticial Pedagogy Reader
By Logan
The book provides an extensive and and up-to-date view of the important issues in critical pedagogy. It can be an indispensable source for future teachers and professional in the field of education. The articles are thought-provoking and analytical. The book can arguably be a reference material for policy-makers and administrators. While it may be missing practical advise, it makes up for it by offering fresh outlook on how education can be transformed to be more representative and equal.

A dialogue on critical pedaogy
By Jennifer Y
This is a great compilation of essays in the field of critical pedagogy. The reader is divided into eight parts. The introduction and Part I lay out key terms and themes in critical pedagogy, while not essentializing the field. I appreciate how the reader includes critiques of the field in an honest way, stating that these critiques "prompt a deepening consciousness"--demonstrating a commitment to dialogue. The range of topics in the following parts demonstrates how critical pedagogy speaks to pressing issues in education today such as social class, race, sexuality, teacher education, and critical media literacy. The introduction to each part includes brief summaries of the essays (very helpful in getting a sense of what each essay is about as well as understanding what the essay brings to the reader) and questions for reflection and dialogue (a good tool for starting discussion in the classroom).

I use articles from this reader in a "diversity" course for undergraduate and graduate students in teacher education. The essays generate discussion on topics of diversity without oversimplifying or perpetuating stereotypes about students of color and other students who are dehumanized by schooling.

Finally, there is a list of "suggested readings for further study" at the end of each part. It makes the reader an excellent resource, not only for the essays that are included, but with a very thorough list of related research and scholarship.

These essays emphasize how social policies intersect with gender, race, and class to alternately compel women to perform care work and to constrain their ability to do so. Leading international scholars from a range of disciplines provide a groundbreaking analysis of the work of caring in the context of the family, the market, and the welfare state.

Review
Provides a thorough, informative and well-documented analysis of the critical problems resulting from the relative de-valuation of any work women do and, in particular, the de-valuation of care work in a world where what is valued is product and profit. In bringing this collection together, Harrington Meyer has created a whole which is greater than the sum of its parts: one comes away not only with an intellectual understanding, but also with a visceral sense of the impact of these stubbornly entrenched aspects of our current form of stratification on the lives of real people.
–Journal of Sociology and Social Welfare

Care Work would be a good addition to courses in family sociology, family studies, gender, life course(s), social and public policy, gerontology, and women's studies. Considered together, the essays in Care Work provide the background for an understanding of the forces that shape the structure and relationships of care across boundaries of history and geography as well as gender, class, race, and policy.
–Contemporary Sociology

Care Work is rich in empirical evidence and creative in its conceptual frameworks. It will serve as a valuable resource for scholars in the field of care, and for those teaching gender, work, women's studies, and medical sociology.
–American Journal of Sociology

This edited volume makes a tremendous contribution to the emerging care work literature....This book is an excellent resource for scholars doing research on care work and those who would like to incorporate care work issues into their research or courses on gender, family, health, or public policy. The empirical work is compelling, often incorporating care providers' voices, and the overlying analytic framework stimulates new ideas..

Review
..."I believe that all psychotherapists would benefit from this book, regardless of level of experience. Graduate students would benefit as well because it is never too early to learn from the mistakes of others. The authors and contributors are more than credible authorities in the field. They are the experts, the movers and shakers in the field of psychotherapy research and practice...The book is simply delightful. The contributors, well-known experts in the field, are very candid and it is obvious that they have reflected on and learned from their mistakes. It is very readable and enjoyable. I found myself not being able to put it down. It is a book that you can easily learn from and I believe it should be required reading for courses in psychotherapy.."
-"Doody Review, January 2003
"This book is a must read for students of therapy of all ages and persuasions - a casebook of how to fall in your face and get up knowing more than before the fall."
-David E. Scharff, M.D., International Institute of Object Relations Therapy and co-author of "Object Relations Individual Therapy
"With astounding candor and with a great deal of humility, twenty-two of the world's master therapists reveal their worst mistakes and failures, and guess what? They are the same ones all of us make. Every psychotherapist will learn from these revelations and will be more empowered to be more confident and humble. You must read this book; you and your clients will greatly benefit."
-Nicholas A. Cummings, Ph.D., Sc.D., Former President of the American Psychological Association, author of 23 books including, "Focused Psychotherapy: A Casebook of Brief, Intermittent Psychotherapy T
"This book isa comfort to those of us who practice the "impossible art" of psychotherapy, because it shows how to admit mistakes, study why we made them, and become better therapists in the process. These cases are worth several graduate courses in psychotherapy."
-William J. Doherty, Ph.D., Director, Marriage and Family Therapy Program at the University of Minnesota, and author of "Soul Searching: Why Psychotherapy Must Promote Moral Responsibility
"Jeffrey Kottler and Jon Carlson beautifully guide several outstanding therapists to be exceptionally candid about some of their worst cases. Not only will this book be very helpful to other practicing therapists, but also to general readers... A forthright and unusually valuable book!."
-Albert Ellis, Ph.D., President, Albert Ellis Institute, New York City and the author of "A Guide to Rational Living

This book offers the much needed assurance that as counselors, we are not alone in our work. Try as we might, we are falible as are all human beings. The recognition that even some of the biggest names in psychotherapy have had "bad" sessions, allows for others to feel more comfortable in their own work.

We all make mistakes
By Deb
A series of short chapters where master therapists share their goofs, this book can offer some relief to "real life" therapists. Predictably, a main theme of the book was it's not about the mistakes, but about what you can learn from them.

I felt that this book did not match up to the captivating and enthralling content and style of other three similar books by Kottler and Carlson. Perhaps the reason for the dryer nature of this book was (as Kottler and Carlson also pointed out) that it was difficult for the therapists interviewed to speak candidly about their perceived therapeutic failures. As a result, the therapists in these stories seemed to be much more detached and expert-like than in the other books where they seemed human, genuine, and real. But, I suppose this shows that even therapists struggle with self-acceptance when confronting personal issues. (Perhaps that's the real message of this book!) :)

By David J. Powell
If only we could admit our mistakes, as a country and as therapists. The leaders in the field are bold and vulnerable enough to do so in this compendium. Not all the writers are worthy of the book, but the complete compilation is worth your time and review. Now if we can get counselors, therapists and supervisors to speak about our mistakes in clinical supervision, our patients might actually get well and we might have to start giving rebates back for the days in therapy we were really off target.
