From Booklist
Aimed at curators, collectors, and historians, this 550-entry alphabetically organized encyclopedia treats manuscript and printed ephemera from early ABC books (circa 1500) to e-mail, as well as more generic items like Form and Poster that cover a broad time span. Baggage sticker, Carte-de-visite, Menu, Seed packet, and Timetable are among the other materials covered. Emphasis is on ephemera in English.

Each entry contains a clear description of the type of document or printed matter, covers its use at the time it was current, and treats its utility for the ephemerist. Cross-references are noted in small capitals in the body of each article, sometimes preceded by see, sometimes not, but providing useful informational webbing in all cases. See also references are given at the foot of articles along with references to applicable print works (both English and foreign language), societies, and collections. Numerous clear black-and-white reproductions serve to extend the text, as does a section of color plates. Articles vary in length from a paragraph or two (e.g., Place card, Riddle book) to nine pages (e.g., Armed forces papers, the various kinds of paperwork generated by the military), with the weighting being appropriate. All of the articles in each alphabetical section are listed on the first page of the section. Guide words and an index provide additional points of entry. A list of ephemera collections and societies and a topically arranged bibliography follow the entries.

Clearly written and cleanly presented, this survey is more comprehensive than Collecting Printed Ephemera (Abbeville, 1988) and provides useful information for those in need of a historical context for a printed document. Recommended for academic and large public libraries, especially those housing special collections that might include this type of material. REVWR

From the Inside Flap
EPHEMERA IS THE PLURAL FORM OF THE GREEK WORD EPHEMERON (EPI = ON, ABOUT, ROUND; HEMERA = DAY). LITERALLY, IT REFERS TO SOMETHING THAT LASTS THROUGH THE DAY, OR, AS MAURICE RICKARDS PROPOSED, THE MINOR TRANSIENT DOCUMENTS OF EVERYDAY LIFE, ALTHOUGH NOT EVERY ITEM OF EPHEMERA CAN BE REGARDED AS TRANSIENT OR EVEN MINOR. COLLECTIVELY THE MANY ENTRIES IN THIS FORMIDABLE NEW REFERENCE WORK PROVIDE A BETTER DEFINITION OF EPHEMERA, SINCE THEY INCLUDE MANUSCRIPT AND PRINTED MATTER (SPORTS PROGRAMS, ENVELOPES, VISITING CARDS, BALLOTS), RECORDS OF THE PAST AND PRESENT (NEWSPAPERS, CIGARETTE CARDS, SEED PACKETS, RATION PAPERS), ITEMS DESIGNED TO BE THROWN AWAY (BUS TICKETS, PAPER BAGS, FRUIT LABELS), AND TO BE KEPT (BOOKMARKS, PLAYING CARDS, BOARD GAMES).

THIS LAVISHLY ILLUSTRATED LANDMARK VOLUME IS INTENDED FOR SOCIAL HISTORIANS AS WELL AS COLLECTORS OF EPHEMERA WHO TAKE A BROADER VIEW THAN THEIR OWN SPECIALIST FIELD.

A must for small collections
By Roberta
I purchased this volume because I was writing a research article on government grey-literature and ephemera. This volume is a fantastic reference for any manager of a collection containing archival or museum items.

Living in the southern hemisphere the postage was as much as the book but I do not regret paying the cost for one minute.

The vendor was excellent.

Provides a guide to fragmentary documents of daily life
By Midwest Book Review
Encyclopedia of Ephemera provides a guide to fragmentary documents of daily life, from postcards and theater programs to laundry lists, and blends a survey of artifacts and art with a history of ephemeria collecting. The author's artifacts come from world sources and provide an excellent survey of ephemera's meaning and social history.

An introduction, and a thorough schooling, in a world you're forgetting
By Marco Buendia
According to the Introduction, this book is the precipitation of the life work of Maurice Rickards, who died in 1998 without living to see its publication. He was, appropriately enough, Senior Research Fellow at the Center for Ephemera Studies at Reading in the UK.

The book appears to have been aimed primarily at collectors, but it clearly transcends that audience. It really serves as a general introduction to printed matter in the English-speaking world, and, to a lesser degree, elsewhere. Britain is the focal region. It's precisely the sort of stuff that libraries would *not* have collected*, nor archives, with their typical focus on particular institutions.

This is a spectacular illustrated assortment of the documents that a literate society churned out in the course of exercising its intellect, commercial undertakings, folk-culture and varied sentimentality. The scope in time is generally the Industrial Revolution till many of the functions were superseded by other media, i.e. mostly pre-radio. Now the Internet is eliminating just about all of this stuff, except in the collector bins, and I now see signs that perhaps even the antique value these documents have leaves the insanely electronically mediated cold. Too much time with the e-tablets.

Some of the documents dealt with here:

birth certificates

chemist's labels (i.e. pharmacists', identifying the preparations made by the pharmacist in-house, as opposed to pre-prepared and branded drugs)

cut-out toys (doll figures, outfits and what-not printed in color on cardboard, to be scissored out)

free frank (the right to mail materials free of specific charge, going back to the time of Oliver Cromwell)

letterheads

news bills (describing the content of early newspapers)

oaths (with, specially, their written or printed relics)

parking tickets

passports

public apologies (handbills "at various periods ... widely accepted as a form of restitution for offense")

removal cards (i.e. change-of-address cards)

sale notice

seed packets

slave papers

toy theatres (children's versions of popular plays)

warrants ("a document of authority", i.e. this term was used for many kinds of attestations of legal acts and authorities)

waybills (listing the itinerary of a traveler, or, more commonly, data relating to freight carriage)

writing tablets

There are clear black-and-white illustrations of some of the documents, every two or three pages or so. There are a few color plates in the center of the book. But the main value is the very clear text, adequately descriptive and rich in historical information and historical sense.

*It's no longer collected by the Zero Public Library in Zero, Mississippi, either. It hit the dumpster with an alarming report early this morning.

Review
""Nine Black Women, Moira Ferguson's fascinating and informative documentation of the literary and political activities of nineteenth-century African American, Canadian, Bermudian, and Caribbean women, is a splendid addition to the library of works now recognizing the lives and voices of women of the African diaspora. A combination of biography, personal testimony, and social history, the breadth of this study opens up new perspectives on how we understand that whether they knew, or knew of each other or not, earlier black women have always engaged each other in powerful dialogue across time and space. "Nine Black Women will find great significance and usefulness in a wide array of classrooms as well as in continuing efforts to excavate a complex past that rejects our marginalization and forgetfulness."
-Nellie Y. McKay, University of Wisconsin-Madison
""Nine Black Women is an important anthology that will greatly facilitate our study and teaching of nineteenth-century black women's writing. The selections offer us intimate--and at times poignant--glimpses into the personal lives of nine black women; but they also invite us to examine the political dimensions of the women's more public cultural, religious, and social experiences. Finally, in bringing together texts by black women from different regions in the Americas, the volume gives us a significantly new gendered account of the making of the black Atlantic."
-Carla L. Peterson, University of Maryland, College Park

Facts badly botched on Mary Seacole--check out the sources!
By Dr Lynn McDonald
This book has a chapter on Mary Seacole, most of it quoting and commenting on her interesting memoir, Wonderful Adventures of Mrs Seacole in Many Lands. Unfortunately, the context given is full of errors, as is typical of the current Seacole literature--strong on propaganda, flawed in facts. Here are some of the worst examples.
Ferguson simply asserts, giving no evidence, that Seacole was a “skilled, peripatetic nurse and doctor for the soldiers staying in the boardinghouse who were afflicted with cholera and yellow fever” (68). But there were no soldiers staying at her boarding house (they lived in barracks); her customers were officers. She was neither a nurse nor a doctor; she frequently called herself a “doctress,’ meaning a herbalist, as her mother had been. She also called herself “doctress, nurse and ‘mother’” (p. 124), not really an occupation. Skilled? How do we know? Seacole gave specifics for only one of her remedies, and that included deyhydrating substances for bowel diseases! The effective cure is oral rehydration therapy. She added lead acetate and mercury chloride to her “remedy” and admitted to “lamentable blunders” (p. 31). She claimed a few cures for cholera--not many--but admitted being unable to help on yellow fever (see her Chapter 7). This is not to blame her--it was a terrible epidemic--but why make a fictitious claim?
If Seacole traveled with her brother in North America, as the chapter says, she never mentioned it in her book. Ferguson gave no source. Seacole was certainly never in Canada, the U.S. or Mexico.
The chapter is wrong again that “British administrators rejected her request--presumably for racist reasons” (69). The problem here is that Seacole never submitted the requisite application with references (available at the National Archives, Kew). She only applied informally, by dropping into various offices connected with the army, too late. The plain fact of the matter, frankly acknowledged in her memoir, is that Seacole went to London not to become a nurse, but to see to her gold mining stock (p. 74-5). She was too late even to join the second group.
Ferguson seems not to realize that officers and ordinary soldiers did not socialize together. Seacole’s business was not “a celebrated headquarters among foot soldiers and high-ranking personnel alike,” but a club for officers. Seacole devoted three chapters to describing the delicious food and drinks available, for a price (well beyond soldier’s pay). There was a mere, separate, “canteen for the soldiery.”
Ferguson was way off again in contrasting Seacole’s work with Nightingale’s, crediting Seacole with being “busy on the battlefields and in makeshift hospitals,” when her battlefield visits were exactly three in number (described in her book) and she was never allowed inside a hospital to help, again, read her book! This is not to deny that Seacole kindly helped soldiers and officers on the three occasions at which she was present at a battle--but why exaggerate? and why denigrate the very difficult work Nightingale did, under terrible conditions? Seacole missed the first, awful, winter; conditions were getting much better when she arrived.
Many more errors could be detailed, but let’s finish with the botch-up over the end of the war, which did not end “suddenly” as claimed. The last battle was on 8 September 1855 and the peace treaty was signed on 30 March 1856. Seacole and her partner unfortunately miscalculated--they were making money in the months following hostilities: “my restaurant was always full” (176) said Seacole. Why not simply give an honest, accurate, account of Mrs Seacole, using her excellent book, which is still worth a read?

Queering India is the first book to provide an understanding of same-sex love and eroticism in Indian culture and society. The essays focus on pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial gay and lesbian life in India to provide a comprehensive look at a much neglected topic. The topics are wide-ranging, considering film, literature, popular culture, historical and religious texts, law and other aspects of life in India. Specifically, the essays cover such issues as Deepa Mehta's recent and controversial film, Fire, which focused on lesbian relationships in India; the Indian penal code which outlaws homosexual acts; a case of same-sex love and murder in colonial India; homophobic fiction and homoerotic advertising in current day India; and lesbian subtext in Hindu scripture. All of the essays are original to the collection. Queering India promises to change the way we understand India as well as gay and lesbian life and sexuality around the world.

Review
"The style adopted by Turcan is accessible and readable. His work covers an immense amount of ground in a very small space. At times his abundance of examples is breathtaking. The reader is given a very real sense of the profusion of rites and rituals that accompanied everyday life in private and in public in the Roman world."-Alex Nice, University of the Witwatersrand

Personable and Efficient

Amaranth Books did an excellent job of keeping in contact with me, and responded to my order quicker than anyone I have ever bought from. The book arrived exactly as it was described and they even included a personalized message thanking me for ordering. I originally chose to order this book from Amaranth on a whim, but now I will always look to see if they have my book before I look anywhere else.

Not for the Average Reader
By WSV
I recently used this book as part of a Summer-session university course on the Archaeology of Religion. Although it contains a healthy amount of information about little known facts concerning Roman religion, it is not for the average reader. Originally written in French, the translation is somewhat poor and confusing.
The majority of the class was at a loss due to the complexity of the book. Even my somewhat rudimentary knowledge of Roman religion was barely adequate to follow the writings. The book lacks adequate chapter breaks resulting in the reader being forced to read the entirety in order not to lose his place.
It says a lot when the professor privately told me that it was a poor choice for a textbook.

A short but surprisingly detailed view of Roman Polytheism
By Jill Malter
The Roman Pagans were a deeply religious people. Turcan's book shows us a great deal about how they worshipped and what rituals they observed. And this book gives even a secular reader a chance to make some sense of it.

Unlike the monotheist god, Roman Goddesses and Gods are perfections of actual attributes. Romans hailed the Gods and Goddesses casually. But their rituals were often serious and complex, for they had to instill a sense of the importance of a vow to be worthy of a particular Goddess or God. And Turcan's book shows us some of these rituals in detail.

As Turcan mentions, when the Romans stopped worshipping the Gods and Goddesses, the Roman Empire quickly fell apart. I think the Christian religion that replaced the Pantheon with a nailed corpse gave Romans little reason to defend their Empire. The new religion was too nihilistic and atheistic. Turcan does not appear to agree with me about this, but he does cite Zosimus who did hold Constantine's failure to celebrate the Secular Games in 314 AD to be responsible for the ruin of the Empire. Turcan also explains that by celebrating the Secular Games, the Romans were in effect "taking out a new 'lease' with the gods."

This is a scholarly and interesting work. I recommend it to Pagans and non-Pagans alike.

Spaces of Capital: Towards a Critical Geography, by David Harvey

David Harvey is the most influential geographer of our era, possessing a reputation that extends across the social sciences and humanities. Spaces of Capital, a collection of seminal articles and new essays spanning three decades, demonstrates why his work has had-and continues to have-such a major impact. The book gathers together some of Harvey's best work on two of his central concerns: the relationship between geographical thought and political power as well as the capitalist production of space. In addition, he chips away at geography's pretenses of "scientific" neutrality and grounds spatial theory in social justice. Harvey also reflects on the work and careers of little-noticed or misrepresented figures in geography's intellectual history-Kant, Von Thünen, Humboldt, Lattimore, Hegel, Heidegger, Darwin, Malthus, Foucault and many others.

From Library Journal
Harvey (anthropology, CUNY Graduate Sch.) is one of the most influential geographers of the later 20th century, especially as concerns the relationship among politics, capitalism, and the social aspects of geographical theory. His previous and still cogent works include Explanation in Geography, Social Justice and the City, and Spaces of Hope. His new book provides the daring reader with an introduction to fields of inquiry collectively termed the new geography or critical geography. Harvey delves deeply into the collective psyche of geography as a discipline and attacks long-held assumptions of scientific neutrality within it, particularly in the chapter titled "Population, Resources, and the Ideology of Science." He also gives a chronology of his own geographic thought and his philosophical underpinnings such as Hegel, Marx, Kant, Heidegger, and the like and a unique perspective on capitalism as a driving force in shaping the physical arrangement of societies. Most geographers may take much of this book as an indictment against their chosen field, but Harvey certainly gives us much to consider. Appropriate for larger public libraries and academic libraries. John E. Dockall, Bernice P. Bishop Museum, Honolulu

Review
"David Harvey is one of geography's best-known social theorists and one of the most important voices on the academic left in the United States...at a time when the fashionable abstractions of hte bougrgeois left just do not seem cute anymore, Harvey's historical geographic materialist analysis offers a refreshingly real-and-imagined geography of radical hope.
TCRecord.org, Gregory Martin and Peter McLaren, both at UCLA."
"Spanning nearly three decades of work, this collection shows David Harvey as steadfast in his commitments while he keeps up with changing times.---Iris Young, University of Chicago."
"These wise reflections on intellectual movements and political battles of the recent past show why David Harvey has become such an impressive figure of contemporary social critique. His fierce intellectual independence and equally insistent moral decency illuminate a concern for social justice that is primarily economic but extends into every sphere. No other scholar of our day has delved so deeply into the powers of capital to remake space and time, or argued so persuasively to place these processes at the core of all social thought.---Sharon Zukin, author of The Cultures of Cities."
"Harvey delves deeply into the collective psyche of geography as a discipline and attacks long-held assumptions of scientific neutrality within it.... Most geographers may take much of this book as an indictment of their chosen field, but Harvey certainly gives us much to consider. Appropriate for larger public libraries and academic libraries.."
-John E. Dockall," Library Journal
"David Harvey has done more than anyone else to demonstrate the centrality of geographical space in theevolution of human society under capitalism. He has done so in a constant dialogue with Marx, aware of the need to confront not just Marx's strengths but his weaknesses. Written over twenty-five years, these essays are an invaluable source of ideas on how human geography shapes and is in turn shaped by capitalist development. The book provides an excellent introduction to Harvey's work: it is essential reading for those interested in creative reinterpretations of Marx and in the historical geography of capitalism globally and locally.---Giovanni Arrighi, author of The Long Twentieth Century."

Brilliant revitalization of Geography
By Dom Casmurro
The influence of David Harvey on the academic discipline of geography cannot be overstated. With incredibly perseverance, Harvey called for greater ethical commitment right from the 1970s which saw the beginning of his career. This book charts the course of his views as they change from then till now. Before I tell you what the book is about, let me say a few words about the style: Harvey writes in incredibly moving and deceptively simple prose (though his ideas are as complicated as any of the Continental thinkers who dominate elite theory today). In a community of theorists who rival each other in being prolix and obscure, this is truly refreshing.
The first part of the book contains several essays, written between 1974 and 2000, all exploring two key themes:1) the discipline of geography and its relevance to today and 2) the nexus between certain forms of geographical knowledge and political power. Some essays are absolute gems. Specially noteworthy are the last two: City and Social Justice, and Cartographic Identities. In the first, Harvey theorizes the possibility of radical urban grassroots movements and the conditions for their 'success' (a bit problematic it must be admitted with its urbanist telos, specially for someone from the economic South like me) and in the second, he envisions a program for a synthetic study of (mostly mutually noncompatible) geographical knowledges constitued at different institutional sites (academic, the State apparatus, transnational orgs like IMF etc, multinational corporations, military, popular knowledge etc etc) as a task for geographers of the near future.
The second set of essays try with great skill (though it must be admitted that to someone not overly familiar with the historical-materialist tradition, they are hard to get through) to insert the thematics of space (especially important when one considers the growing unequality of development in today's world and the international (gendered) division of labor)in a historical-materialist tradition with the project of founding a historico-geographical materialist tradition.
In any case, WHATEVER your background read this book. You may not agree with everything but it will trulymake you question a lot of your received notions.

A collection of essays of differing quality
By M. A. Krul
"Spaces of Capital" is the title under which David Harvey has collected a series of essays or observations written by him for a variety of geographical and economical journals. The essays span the whole period of Harvey's working life, and therefore trace the development of his view and thoughts closely. This is interesting at a sort of 'meta' level, but it has the downside that the first half of the book is still very much in the orthodox geographical mold and mostly quite vague and noncommittal. Although already in the first essays he proposes a more critical geographical science, and lashes out at the McCarthyism in the field, they still lack the coherent framework that the Marxist point of view would later give to his insights.

Of most interest, for this reason, are the last three or four essays in the book. These are in fact very good and worthwhile, dealing with his theory of rent, the theory of uneven geographical development, and the way capitalist accumulation affects and is affected by geographical structures, mostly in the form of immobile fixed capital. The essay called "The Spatial Fix" is more historical, and goes into the role of space and geography in the works of Marx, Von Thünen and Hegel; this is probably the most interesting part of the book for philosophers and historians.

If you're interested in the later Harvey's insights into Marxist political economy and geographical differences, I would recommend buying "Limits to Capital" instead. This book is mostly of use as an addition to an already well-stocked 'critical theory' shelf, for the specialist. Inhabitants of Baltimore, MD, might also want to buy this for the quite extensive study on the political economy of the city that is included in this book.

It is unfortunate the turn that the field of Geography has made into the Marxist realm. While the academic side of geography takes comfort in the "feel good" ideas of this approach, it serves no purpose in advancing relevant work.
Do your self a favor - skip this book and go buy an old copy (prior to 1970) of almost any geography text. You will be much better served.

From The New Yorker
The medicine line, a hundred-mile stretch of the U.S.Canadian border at the top of Blaine County, Montana, epitomizes borderlessness. "The prairie stretches seamlessly outward," LaDow writes, "as if the wind were blowing it toward the Rockies." But the region is thick with stories: Sitting Bull crossed and recrossed the medicine line during the Sioux resistance, and the settlements that arose on both sides of the border in the late nineteenth century included Chinese, Norwegians, Jews, and Mennonites. Wallace Stegner, who grew up near the medicine line, caught the landscape's harsh, wild beauty, and in this fine book LaDow gives it the history it deserves.

-"The New Yorker
"In this absorbing history of a place, the borderland between Saskatchewan and Montana, Beth LaDow blends narrative and biography with scholarly research and remarkable personal insight. Her prose is as spare and subtly graceful as the prairie she writes about."
-"Seattle Times
"An involving contribution to western history."
-"Booklist
"It's a switch to see a Yank soothing an identity crisis by scratching our myths. Yet that's what Beth LaDow is up to in this fine history of medicine line country...General readers and experts will profit from this book."
-"The Globe and Mail
"This is a serious bok but that not mean that Ms LaDow cannot introduce sparks of humour when a theme becomes too serious, or tedious. Good stories abound.."
-"Geomatica, Vol. 55, No.2, 2001

Imaginatively Written Western History
By A Customer
This is a lyrical, vividly written narrative history in a style which will appeal to a general audience. The author has closely studied an area along the Montana-Saskathewan border beginning with Sitting Bull's surrender to the U.S. Cavalry in 1881 and ending with the post World War I influenza pandemic. Although largely empty now, in the early 20th Century this vast dry-land prairie was home to many thousands of small-scale homesteaders struggling to wrest a living from an unforgiving landscape. The author includes interviews and correspondence with the late author Wallace Stegner, whose family attempted to make a living on both sides of this borderland. The numerous photos and illustrations are great, and along with the text give the reader an evocative sense of the hard life on the high western plains.

interesting if a bit academic
By mike arents
interesting account if a bit dry and academic. led me to Wallace Stegner's "Wolf Willow" which is richer with anecdotes and better writing. also led me to "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" which is a must-read for any Jefferson-loving American. all three titles made me interested in the lives of the Indians before 1800: was their life as brutal when the enemy was other tribes rather than white goldseekers, homesteaders et al? or were they at peace with the earth and each other?

Medicine Line
By A. S. Hanson
An introduction to Wallace Stegner's home country along the Montana-Canadian boarder. Wolf Willow is Stegner's answer through a novel/autobiography to the Medicine Line documentary history. Both are interesting for the history of early twentieth century Indian and European settlement in the US and Western Canada.

Review
"This important new book invites relationship researchers to take cultural influences seriously.Gaines' analysis skillfully combines resource exchange theory with new research on cultural value orientations of individualism, collectivism, familism and spiritualism. Included are comprehensive analyses of personal relationships among African American, Latino, Asian American and interethnic couples. Gaines makes a powerful case that to develop models of personal relationships that transcend culture, we must first acknowledge and understand how ethnicity and culture shape close relationships."
-Anne Peplau, Dept. of Psychology, UCLA

Review
"This superb collection not only provides original and important perspectives on many aspects of eighteenth century thought; it also insists, passionately and provocatively, that the Enlightenment could speak to the drama and frustrations of the human condition more cogently than the philosophy of our own day. The contributors engage lucidly and critically with postmodernism, making keen use of its important insights, but sternly deflating the widespread misconceptins it has engendered about its intellectual predecessors. Few readers will agree with everything said here. But all readers will find something to make them stop, and ponder, and reflect.."
-"David A.Bell, Professor of History, John Hopkins University
"This much-needed collection of essays explodes postmodernism's ignorant prejudices about the Enlightenment and restores that great intellectual movement to its proper place as the source of the modern Enlightenment fashion, the essays are vigorously argued and lucidly written. An Outstanding book.."
-" Paul Robinson, Professor of History, Stanford University

Point, Counterpoint
By John C. Landon
The debate over the postmodern, in an excess of false controversy, has put the legacy of the Enlightement at satirical risk, and subjected it to a misleading series of ahistorical slanders. The final verdict should be to find the two eras to be one and the same era, by a concordance of rational skepticisms. This collection of essays, perchance the philosophes to strike back, shows the inevitable reaction to the postmodern turn, with a return to renewed consideration of the original culprit history. We find there the birth of the modern and the postmodern together, witness the scrutiny of rationality in the period condemned for this trait. One should think Rousseau has outsmarted the lot, as he was pre-modern and the first postmodern, and the very one to ignite the modern, as a principal suspect. The problem was never the Enlightenment as much as the mechanized version of its significance. And the irony is that the postmodern gesture will force the question to the surface.
