In this book, Elkins shows how "dire anxiety in the face of pictures" has induced a crisis in recent art criticism. Specialists, compelled to interpret and reinterpret paintings in search of puzzles, ambiguities and hidden meanings, have generated reams of excessive and esoteric scholarship: "Their theories are the inflammation that results from irritating the wound instead of letting it alone so it can heal." Some of his claimsAthat art historians, who "are attracted by oddities, mistakes [and] idiosyncrasies" seek out, and themselves enact, "thematized self-awareness"Ahave intuitive appeal, holding a mirror up to a culture unaware of its own fascinations. The way writers write about art has changed remarkably over the centuries, observes James Elkins. Why is it, he asks, that classical and Renaissance writers rarely took more than a single page to describe a painting, whereas modern art historians seem to need to write entire books? To answer this conundrum, Elkins, a most astute art historian and a prolific writer, has produced his own 292-page tome. He discusses three kinds of responses that art historians display when faced with "pictorial complexity." The simplest is to see pictures as puzzles for the art historians to "solve." The second assumes pictures to be inherently ambiguous, possessing multiple levels of meaning that cannot easily be reconciled. The third is a wild, uncontrolled response that gives insight into the meaning of pictures through hallucinations. Elkins examines a broad array of paintings, from Renaissance paintings that hide figures to Salvador Dali's paranoiac meditations on Millet's The Angelus, and includes detailed accounts of some of the most vexed works in art history, including Michelangelo's Sistine Ceiling and da Vinci's Last Supper. This is curious book. The main part has some value as a discussion of paintings that have proven difficult to interpret iconographically, including such famous specimens as Botticelli's Primavera, Giorgione's Tempesta, and Leonardo's Last Supper. This would be useful, except that the author holds that such investigations are needlessly complicated. Yet the complexity arises because the problems are knotty, and cannot be waved away with the excuse that earlier generations thought the works less problematic.

He does not mention that some Victorian artists deliberately created paintings called Problem Pictures in which viewers were invited to give their own subjective interpretations. Instead, he starts with the bizarre theories of a Scandinavian scholar, who finds all sorts of "hidden" images in impressionist paintings. These projective absurdities are clearly examples of the Rorschach principle, now discredited as a diagnostic tool. Even though Elkins concedes that the supposed findings of the Scandinavian scholar are extreme and improbable, he somehow wishes to use them as paradigmatic of art history as currently practiced. In his presentation of "hidden images" Elkins seems unaware of the research on pareidolia, research which would answer many of his questions.

Good Idea and OK Attempt

This book is an attempt to highlight venues in American popular culture that contain elements of religion or replace it all together. The thesis sounds very intriguing and caught my attention right off. At times, however, the essays that compose the book seem to be too much of a stretch. They can seem to force the analogy of religion to some topics. Not all the meat of the essays is unfounded. Many points that are raised are worth reading. I perhaps had higher expectations of the book and was therefore a little disappointed in what insight it had being surrounded by superfluous discussion. The essays are intelligently written and carry a heavily academic tone. Overall, I gained a few insights, but not what I would consider 313 pages worth.

Christianity and Native Spirituality Are Compatible!

Though Native American and Christian seems like a contradiction because of the tragic course American history has taken concerning indigenous people- it cannot be denied that there is a long and complex tradition and relationship among America's Indigenous people and Christianity. Many tribes and Native people have cultivated and enriched this relationship going right back to the beginning of "America". This relationship, in its pure and uncorrupted form, demonstrates that one does not have to stop being an Indian to be a Christian or that one cannot be a Christian if they cling to an Indian knowledge of spiritual reality. True Christianity, undefiled by ideology and political opportunism is compatible and reconcilable with Native worldview, thought and philosophy. James Treat's book, "Native and Christian", as well as his other offerings and endeavors demonstrate this dynamic clearly. "Native and Christian" is an important work to look at for anyone wishing to explore this topic from aan anthropologic, theological or religious perspective. As a native and a Christian I will state that the book rings true and has been very helpful in my own studies and spiritual walk.

This is an amazing work. This is for anyone who is interested in reading books by Gloria Naylor, Toni Morrison, and similiar, from a lens that explores the connections of giving women the power to be midwives and being healers in their own communities to the loss of that and seeing it in the current state of health in Black women in USA today who no longer have access to the knowledge that their ancestors had; who no longer have that knowledge because the Western medical world they now have to rely on ignores knowledge of women's health and birthing through the vehicle of the oratory and folkore as valid knowlege. This is amazing book that shows the use of the narrative and fictional pieces that continue on the traditions and viable knowledge of these forgotten Granny Midwives. Thank you Professor Lee for doing this amazing work that give voice to a Black Female community that was historically seen and constructed by maintsream White Americans as "too ignorant to contribute anything to the knowledge in the world of Medicine". Even today, many black women feel the effects of this negative stereotyping when trying to interact with a predominantly Euro-anglo centric and White health care system. Anyone interested in the reproductive health of women shoudl read this book!

Calling white racism "the most consequential [problem] for the nation's future," two University of Florida sociologists offer several recent case studies: cross burnings in Dubuque, Iowa; discrimination against black patrons at the Denny's restaurant chain; the readiness of the Boston police and the media to believe Charles Stuart when he accused a black man of committing the murder he himself committed-a case consistently mentioned in discussions Sue Smith, who said a black man kidnapped her two children before she confessed to killing them. Much of this has already been picked over by the media but the authors suggest that these events could have turned out differently save for certain individual and societal perceptions and reactions. For example, the authors uncover knee-jerk reactions in media treatment of 1988 presidential campaign scarecrow Willie Horton and rapper Sister Souljah. The book's opening description of the Los Angeles riots as an "urban rebellion" telegraphs a strong PC bias, in which the authors avoid nuanced discussion of race (try Stephen Carter or Cornel West), dismiss white (not to mention black) fears of black crime and offer such dubious proposals as reparations for slavery and a new constitutional convention that would entrench identity politics. Still, the authors are correct to say that blacks have more contact with whites than vice versa, and that whites must develop cross-racial empathy; those who have "some personal experience with exploitation, discrimination, or oppression" are, they say, more likely to empathize.

Feagin and Vera's well-intentioned book presents seven case studies of American racism perpetrated by middle-class whites against blacks (who, for Feagin and Vera, belong to no class). The cases are those of cross burnings in Dubuque, Iowa, that protested a proposal to attract black families to the preponderantly white city; ill will among undergraduates at a college (Olivet) founded by abolitionists; discrimination in family restaurant chains (Shoney's, Denny's, IHOP); whites (skinheads) who murder blacks or frame them for murder; Rodney King and the LAPD; Willie Horton and George Bush; and Sister Souljah and Bill Clinton. The concise recaps of these newsy racial incidents may become godsends to students with term papers to write but don't make up for the book's great weakness--deploring racism's cost in dollars but nowhere even estimating it. The volume's final contribution to understanding American racism could be glossed, unimpressively but not completely unfairly, "Few white Americans realize that racism was not ended by the Civil War. A compelling look at Racism within the country

After reading some of the reviews, and finishing this excellent study, it is apparent that the message of this book did not come across to some. Feagin is not picking on "white" (European Americans) people, he is merely pointing out the inequalities that exist within the United States. This book is thorough in proving the experiences of people of color and of European Americans are extremely different. Feagin found police brutality, for example, occurred increasingly more for people of color than for European Americans. African Americans experience harassment far more than European Americans, and the cases Feagin uses illustrates this fact. Since European Americans are found in government, police forces, Fortune 500 companies, and other vessels of power, "white" interests are protected.
As one can see, this book causes the reader to think. Even though you might not agree with Feagin's conclusions, it causes us to examine a social ill that has been with this country since its founding. I will not only answer questions, but help raise critical questions about ethnic relations in this country.

I have read the book White Racism and it is an excellent book. Racism is viewed from a different perspective. This book give the real reasons whites don't like black people and the reasons for the coverup. White's should take a long look at imbedded racism and see all people as one. A part of the human race.

Help with the HMO maze

This book is full of great advice for all of us who have been frustrated by dealing with an HMO. It lays out the reasons why managed care has problems, and then explains in plain language how to get good health care from a system that isn't set up to be patient-friendly. There are really good tips on how to get the most out of your plan. Instead of focusing on what's wrong, Drs Theodosakis and Feinberg tell you what you can do to make it work. They are especially good on telling how to build good relationships with the health professionals that you have to depend on within the HMO system.

"Don't Let Your HMO Kill You" is a far more important book than one might glean from the title. Drs. Theodsakis and Feinberg do serve up heaping portions of invaluable advice on dealing with your HMO. They go well beyond this, however, providing the clearest and most sensible discussion of achieving good health I have yet read. Many health books are meandering lists that depart from the mind as soon as the reader turns the page; Theodsakis and Feinberg provide clear and compelling concepts which will orient you for a lifetime of good choices. A wonderful companion in the pursuit of a life of health.
