tough but worth it..

This is a great book but it would benefit readers to have a base on economics. This is NOT easy reading. For a relatively quick reader, one chapter takes well over an hour to get through. Full of valuable information-know economics and international politics.

Dudley has written for many national periodicals, and his dispatches from Colombia have been heard on National Public Radio. His five years in that war-, drug-, and assassin-torn country are fodder for this extremely revealing volume of reportage. Infinite patience and concentration will be needed to navigate the author's encyclopedic exposition. Careful readers, though, are rewarded with a cast of characters so colorful that if the venue were shifted to the U.S., they could only reside in New Orleans. A country with one-seventh the population of the U.S. experiences some 30,000 murders per year, 75 political assassinations per week, and 10 kidnappings per day. (Kidnapping in order to elicit funding for political fronts has been perfected to a high art.) So deadly are the country's politics that the author had to flee the country and still fears for his life. But he was impelled to chronicle the story anyway in this thrilling and informative read. Includes impromptu photographs that assist in humanizing the myriad rebels, guerrillas, drug kingpins, and politicians who populate this quagmire. Allen Weakland

For five years, Steven Dudley filed regular dispatches from Colombia for The Washington Post, National Public Radio and The Economist. His longer articles have also appeared in The American Prospect, The Columbia Journalism Review, The Nation, In These Times and The Progressive. He now lives in Miami.

Informative, detail oriented accounts

I am on my second reading of the book, and unless you read each page three times, you will need a second reading of the book. There are a tremendous number of characters to keep track of. To his credit, Dudley does reintroduce characters in later chapters as if you've never read about them.
It's obvious this book is a rewrite of a masters thesis, but I'm not sure what Dudley was rewriting it into. It feels as if it was supposed to be (and to some extent is) a story of the authors experiences in Colombia and what he was able to reveal about the Colombian political culture. However the chapters seem to be chunks of a thesis with a new title put on and rearranged text to better fit the title. For example, the "Black Vladimir" chapter contains a great deal of information on the character, however so does the rest of the book.
Having said that, it is a great overview of the tumultuous 80's in Colombia through detailed accounts. This info is essential to understand current politics in Colombia. Also included is a cursory overview of the pre-1980 colombian political situation as well as the 90's. There is an attempt to cover politics outside of the UP, but it struck me as shallow. The 90's, for example, are glossed over for the most part. I also wish there was more information about the more current situation.

Informative--but repetative--but repetative--but...sigh

I found the character descriptions and events chronicled in this book to assist me immensely in understanding the Colombian political predicament. I was sorely disappointed, however, that the book seemed very "cut and paste." Mostly it seemed like he wrote a variety of papers, then slapped chapters on them and called them a book. I was reminded again and again what "una guerra en todas las formas" meant. Literally **27** times this term is DEFINED. Ok, I got it the first time you told me. Furthermore, he repeats descriptions of people and places even in the same chapter, to a point that is ANNOYING. I don't need you to tell me the same thing 14 times, please edit that out. WHERE WAS HIS EDITOR?? Did he fall asleep reading it? There are so many details and descriptions in this book that are crucial to understanding current Colombian politics, but I have to give it 3 stars based on the fact that he was at times verbose, reiterative (yes, reiterative), and that in all the book seemed like a disjointed set of narratives. Mr. Dudley, please, read your own work from beginning to end and tell me that you realize it needs editing!!

A Good Account, But . . .

Overall, author Dudley has done right in laying open the running sores of the Colombian civil war to public view, a generally engrossing - and gross - account of chicanery, cynicism, and atrocity.
That said, I could not give it more than three stars because of its flawed insistence - in my opinion - of blaming the left for its own destruction in Colombia. At one point he writes of the "startling number of dead" the UP "put in the morgue." Yet the Union Patriotica did not torture, kill, or "disappear" these people, nor force the death squads to do so, and therein lays the book's flawed premise.
By his own admission, Colombia has engaged in political violence against dissidents for decades, and its 1980s death squads were willing to kill virtually anyone they disliked. The UP, then, did not have to be cynically betrayed or manipulated by the FARC to earn this lethal attention - it would have come anyway, regardless of any guerrilla politics behind the scenes. The paramilitaries were out to destroy the left, and the center; the guerrilla politics upon which Dudley lavishes so much scrutiny were a secondary factor at best, and in no way confirm the Colombian military's "analysis" or strategy.

Author of 16 books on country music and compiler-annotator of more than 100 albums of the music, Wolfe belongs to the small band of country music scholars and writes better than most of them. He has concentrated on the most venerable country styles, and the subjects of these 50-odd profiles mostly have, as an old-time country radio announcer might put it, gone on before. Wolfe interviewed many of them while he could, though, and when he was too late, talked with surviving associates. A major disappointment. There's very little information available on the country ...

A major disappointment. There's very little information available on the country musicians from the 40's through the 60's whose songs we loved but weren't superstars like Hank Williams or Jim Reeves. Both Williams and Reeves have had several biographies published about them in recent years and then there are the auto-biographies like Loretta Lynn. If you were hoping, as I was, to find out more about artists like Wayne Raney and Curley Fox and the Delmore Brothers then your curiosity would be mildly satisfied. These are People magazine like sketches, little profiles that have no depth and really carry very little actual information about the artist. I suppose that they didn't want to burden the book with such things as birth and death dates and any record data but it would have been helpful. The stories themselves are lightweight puff pieces that tell very little and leave you as uninformed as before about the artist. Only on occasion as with the Louvin Brothers does anything strike a chord.
While I may have been hoping for a Nashville Babylon in a few of these pieces as with the story of Stringbean and Lefty Frizzell and Don Gibson there is none of that here. Not a hint or a breath of scandal anywhere. That is another indictment of the book. I will point out one glaring case of the author's ignoring or glossing over his subject's dishonesty. Roy Acuff stole the song 'Wreck on the Highway' from Dorsey Dixon and through a long series of lawsuits cheated him of most of the royalties until the copyright was finally awarded to Dixon. In his story on Acuff Wolfe claimed that Dixon didn't write the song and had sold the copyright which is contrary to everything in the history of the Dixon family and the song, if you check.
I'll keep on hoping for a factual and entertaining history of some of the classic country musicians and singers.. There were some colorful personalities and great histories and they certainly deserve a fine biography and it's unfortunate that this book isn't the one. The book is a mix-it tells you a lot about the artists you already know. It tells you something about artists you've never heard of. The artists about which you'd really like to know more he really gives you little. I would have loved more about the Louvin Brothers. I wish he would have included the Bailes Brothers as they certainly deserved a chapter. Some of his omissions were as puzzling as his choices. Why would he include Seven Foot Dilly but omit the Bailes Brothers? Or Ray Price? Or Red Foley? I'd like to know more of the Bailes Brothers history and I couldn't care less about Seven Foot Dilly and Red River Dave and the Georgia Yellow Hammers as wonderful as they may have been.
I'll still keep hoping eventually for a Nashville Babylon to tell the true, trashy history of Nashville since its inception as Music city. The Stringbean murder. The Sgt Barry Sadler killing of Lee Emerson, How the Bailes Brothers got kicked off the Opry. All the juicy stuff. But this book isn't it. Not by a long shot.

Love the old time Country Music....

Mostly bought this for the information on Curly Fox & Texas Ruby, but their "chapter" was short, with not much info. My copy was a hardback that I purchased here on Amazon for $5, a steal for sure. This book has a lot of info on earl country acts. worthwhile!

About the Author
John Portmann has studied at Yale, Cambridge University, and L'ecole des hautes etudes in sciences sociales in Paris. 31 flavors of an emotion

The real title of this study might have been something much less appealing, like, Schadenfreude: It's Meaning, Experience and Social Ramification. Or, The Anatomy of Schadenfreude. That would have seriously limited its appeal to the average reader perhaps. (So it's just as well that the title parallels the recently very popular, but not so good, book called When Bad Things Happen to Good People.)
But, the fact is, that really is the content of the book, and fascinating and delightful it is. The prose style is crystal and orderly, almost like a serious dissertation that went through a top-notch editor (although there is a typo here and there, but who's counting?).
This emotion that has no proper English name is dissected not only in a variety of ways, but also at a variety of angles, revealing unexpected relationships between this pecadillo and our construct of justice. For example, Do we take pleasure in the justice that is served when one who "deserves" it gets his/her comeuppance? Or is it that we take pleasure in the knowledge that we were lucky enough to have been spared the same nasty spill of fate? Is Schadenfreude the same thing as malice? What about the element of anticipation? Even if we may not consciously wish any person any harm, but still find it somewhat pleasurable to discover that so-and-so was laid-off or demoted, are we guilty? Why is that some tiny little part of us "dies" when our friends succeed, and do better than we do?
How is Schadenfreude different from envy, malice, jealousy, and resentment?
Questions such as these and many more are carefully examined by cross-referencing Nietzsche, Schopenhauer, and modern scholars of ethics, including John Rawls. Complex theme but Portman is a gentleman scholar, goes out of his way (albeit effortlessly) to make clear all his references.

Why do we (sometimes) delight in the suffering of our fellow humans? Should we fell ashamed of schadenfreude and other "outlaw emotions," as the author calls them? John Portmann has produced an elegant and readable meditation on the significance of the pleasure we take in the spectacle afforded by the misfortures of others. Portmann carefully distinguishes schadenfreude from garden variety malice in the course of his examination of what great philosophers and the world's major religions have to tell us about the subject. Throughout the book, the author comes across as brilliant and compassionate, but never dull or stuffy, even when he argues (in the conclusion) that the satisfactions of mercy can be every bit as great as those of revenge. When Bad Things Happen to Other People is an important contribution to the growing literature on human emotions.

As a law professor, I thought I knew everything about schadenfreude, but then I read John Portmann's fascinating book, and it made me think about the terrible things that happen to people who deserve to have even worse things happen to them in a completely new light. Why is it that we feel such satisfaction at the misfortunes of others? Portmann explains, in a wonderfully lucid and elegant style, the differences among the various senses in which we view the bad things that might happen, ranging from comedy through true tragedy. This book is a real crossover between scholarship and a delightful read.

I agree with the previous reviewer in that this book is very well-written and readable to a non-sociologist like me. There are articles on pretty much everything there is in university like the actual buildings on campus, along with how the classrooms and desks/tables are organised, how racism and sexism are perpetuated in society because of how schools are tacitly non-inclusive, to actual indoctrination and 'obedience training' in law and business schools. I go to a public university in Canada, and while I don't think the hidden curriculum is as obvious or extreme here as these American sociologists say since they only looked at American schools, the situation would probably be roughly the same across the Western world. This book breaks new ground in that hidden curriculum hadn't been studied in-depth before; it has only been highschools and elementary schools that have been studied before. It was good to have some of my suspicions confirmed by others by reading this book. I think it's good that it's acceptable to talk about this sort of thing openly, society has progressed far enough that we can do that I guess.

Hidden cirriculum and invisible enemy.

Apparently the term "hidden cirriculum" was introduced in 1968 by Philip Jackson. It has long been known that schools for children did more than teach reading, writing and arithmetic, but this used to be considered a good thing - building up character or teaching citizenship or whatever. Those who seek higher education might be expected to be better prepared to resist brainwashing but the book shows that they too can be indoctrinated in subtle ways.
The title led me to fear unintelligible prose of the kind I associate with words like "deconstruction" anf "post-modernist" and "structuralism" but it is quite well written and understandable. I suppose it would be asking for a different book to complain that there are no opposing views presented. Some conservatives believe that our campuses are hotbeds of radicalism and feminism and vegetarianism etc. Their views would have livened it up a bit. As it is the contributors battle an invisible opponent, but perhaps that fits in with the concept of the cirriculum being hidden.

Must-have for exploring feminist theory!

I bought this for my 2000-level feminism class, and it's generated many lively discussions in my class. I'm also enjoying reading it on my own, however. It's perfect if you want to get to know feminist theory as it existed in the 80's and 90's. Gives a good, solid variety of feminist theorists, from Judith Butler to Audre Lorde; phenomonological, radical, post-modern, and psychoanalytical theorists. The difficulty of the readings also varies; some of the articles are difficult to follow without a philosophical background, while others are accessible to those new to feminist thought. Highly recommend! A great starting anthology.

Pamela H. Smith is Associate Professor of History at Pomona College and the Claremont Graduate University. She is the author of The Business of Alchemy: Science and Culture in the Holy Roman Empire, winner of the 1995 Pfizer Prize in the History of Science. Paula Findlen is Professor of History and Director of the Science, Technology and Society Program at Stanford University. She is the author of Possessing Nature: Museums, Collecting, and Scientific Culture in Early Modern Italy, winner of the 1995 Marroro Prize in Italian History and 1996 Pfizer Prize in the History of Science.
