Religion and Its Monsters, by Timothy K. Beal

Religion's great and powerful mystery fascinates us, but it also terrifies. So too the monsters that haunt the stories of the Judeo-Christian mythos and earlier traditions: Leviathan, Behemoth, dragons, and other beasts. In this unusual and provocative book, Timothy K. Beal writes about the monsters that lurk in our religious texts, and about how monsters and religion are deeply entwined. Horror and faith are inextricable. Ans as monsters are part of religious texts and traditions, so religion lurks in the modern horror genre, from its birth in Dante's Inferno to the contemporary spookiness of H.P. Lovecraft and the Hellraiser films. Religion and Its Monsters is essential reading for students of religion and popular culture, as well as any readers with an interest in horror.

From Publishers Weekly
This brilliant, twisted, imaginative book explores religion's dark side, from the predictable monsters of sacred texts (Leviathan, Behemoth, Tiamat and Rama's monkeys) to more startling choices from popular culture: one section applies religion's laws of ritual purity and danger to the novel Dracula, for example. Beal sees religion everywhere; Frankenstein, he asserts, is "a profoundly theological horror" about creator-figures playing God, while contemporary teen Goths inhabit "a counterculture infused with a mix of monstrosity and pre-modern Christian religious iconography and architecture." When Beal concludes the book by explaining that "our monsters are ourselves," it comes not as a cultural indictment from a self-satisfied pundit but an astute observation by a witty and wise fellow traveler. From Library Journal
According to Beal (biblical literature, Case Western Reserve Univ.; The Book of Hiding), "monsters bring on a limit experience that is akin in many respects to religious experience, an experience of being on the edge of certainty." Here he dissects the interface of popular culture and religion, which meet in the personification of evil, that is, monsters. Characters like Tiamat, Leviathan, Dracula, and Oz's Winged Monkeys, as well as horror writers like Lovejoy, Stephen King, and Bram Stoker all fit into Beal's two-pronged approach: religion as horror and horror as religion. He finds that the combination of the Gothic and the theological reveals deep insecurities in our faith in ourselves "the unplumbed abyss of unknowing" inside us. Thus, he argues, these frightening specters of chaos and disorientation within order and security are psychic markers of our endangered sense of self and stability. An informal, chatty style makes this more accessible than academic, although it is well researched. Recommended for religion and popular culture collections. "This is scholarship in cultural analysis at its best: well-documented, thought-provoking, and funny. Its crisp writing almost fools you into thinking it's simple. But it does what it says: it raises profound questions that survive their answers. Critical of the devastating prejudices that underlie the religious imagination, it stops short of moralizing. A bravura piece of what binds the cultural disciplines together."

Can you draw out Leviathan with a fishhook?
By Zack Davisson
Why are we afraid of blood drinkers? What makes the drinking of blood any more horrific than the eating of flesh (steak), or the wearing of skin (leather)? It was a question that I had never asked before, but just accepted in such creatures as vampires and chupacabra. Little did I know that there is an actual Biblical prohibition to drinking blood (Deuteronomy 12:23), as the soul is said to live in the blood, and to drink it is to swallow the soul and take that which belongs to God alone. After all, "The blood is the life, Mr. Renfield."

Such revelations can be found in abundance in "Religion and Its Monsters." Author Timothy K. Beal has plundered the Bible of its hidden monsters, and laid bare the secrets and contradictions of Leviathan, Behemoth and the lesser-known but more important Yam. Although most of the mythology is Christian, he has referenced the Bagavadgita and Krishna, as well as other older religions that influenced Christianity, such as the mythology of the Near East. As well as some insights into the nature of monsters and treated in these religions, he has shown the influence of these primitive monsters on modern life.

He has drawn a fishhook through the mouth of the Babylonian chaos god/monster Tiamat, run a conclusive link through the Biblical Leviathan, up to Lovecraft's Cthulhu and into the enormous hides of cinematic Eco-monsters like Godzilla and his contemporaries. He has shown the changeover in the bible, were God was set against the ancient chaos gods of older religions such as Yam and Baal, until the Revelation of John brought a new player onto the field, that of the great dragon Satan.

An absolute must-read for anyone interested in religion and/or modern horror. Without knowing the biblical links, such as the blood-drinking prohibition, one cannot fully appreciate monsters such as Dracula and Cthulhu. The roots of horror run deep and olde.

The Bible ... starting with The Bride of Frankenstein
By M. J. Smith
Can a serious theological book possibly go wrong after opening with remarks concerning The Bride of Frankenstein? Not this book!
This book is a serious, publically accessible study of chaos monsters and religion or, if you prefer, the edges of ordered reality and religion. From the religious perspective it takes you through the Near Eastern chaos monsters thru Job, the Psalms and Revelations. It has fascinating observations concerning the monsters of the Hebrew Scriptures as both frightening as God's playthings.
Culturally, the book looks at Orientalism, monster flicks, horror fiction and Goth music - as embracing or staving off the chaos monsters.
One often wishes that Beal would distribute the attention he gives to detail differently -- Job and Dracula get the most detailed attention. But one must admit that it is only because ones own interests are differently distributed. However, the topics that are less detailed have well chosen seminal ideas for the reader to think for themselves! This encouragement for independent thought around his subject is the result of the author's humility despite the breadth of knowledge he displays.
If you have any interest in the dark side of society, this book is well worth your time.

Masterpiece in Religious Literature
By Mike
The moment I started to read this intriguing modern religious masterpiece, I could not put it aside. Religion and Its Monsters is a book where one reading can easily lose track of time, because the words flow so perfectly with much thought and genius behind them. Professor Beal seems to have gone through and mastered every possible source, both modern and ancient, on the topics concerning monsters and how they are intertwined with religion. I especially enjoyed the sections concerning Leviathan, Tiamat, and vampires, and how all these creatures have their place in our very own Judeo-Christian Bible. I already know this is a book I will read through several times and I highly recommend it.

Black Wealth/ White Wealth: A New Perspective on Racial Inequality, by Thomas M. Shapiro, Melvin L. Oliver

Black Wealth/White Wealth demonstrates how an analysis of private wealth uncovers a revealing story about race in America. An examination of how assets are created, expanded and preserved reveals a deep economic divide between blacks and whites. Charting the changing structure of inequality over many generations, the authors examine how and why many blacks have had difficulty accumulating wealth and opportunities for a better life. In combining quantitative data from over 12,000 households and interviews with a range of black and white families, the racial face of wealth in America is measured and conceptualized.

From Publishers Weekly
Racial comparisons by income are misleading, argue these two sociologists, because the black middle class lags far behind its white counterpart in terms of assets that can expand choices and opportunities for generations to come. Their analysis provides telling insight into the causes and persistence of American racial inequality: government policies of suburbanization and redlining helped boost wealth for whites over blacks, while discrimination against blacks long kept them from developing assets through self-employment. The authors' study uncovers "the buried fault line of the American social system," and they note that three times as many whites as blacks grow up in households with three months of financial reserves. Because of such intergenerational transfers of wealth, the authors make a philosophical case for racial reparations but also argue for more feasible policies, such as government-supplemented accounts to make education and home-ownership more available, as well as the modification of tax policies (mortgage deductions, capital gains) that subsidize the rich. Oliver teaches at UCLA, Shapiro at Northeastern University. Illustrations.

Review
...an excellent job of quantifying our contributions to the American economic system. -- Savannah Tribune
Recommended reading. -- Emerge
Melvin Oliver and Thomas Shapiro have written the definitive book about...black-white differences in assets. -- Contemporary Sociology
If anyone believes the `playing field' in America is level, then they should read this book. By focusing attention on wealth as opposed to income, Black Wealth/White Wealth changes the tenor and direction of debates on poverty, welfare and affirmative action in decisive ways. In a powerfully written book, Oliver and Shapiro present compelling evidence, incisive arguments and cogent policy suggestions to address the lingering racial divide. A must read! -- Maxine Waters, U.S. House of Representatives, California
Oliver and Shapiro have made an important contribution to our public debate on the roots of inequality between the races in America. By highlighting the effects of wealth inequality, the authors draw attention to some disturbing truths about the haves and the have-nots in our society. -- Senator Bill Bradley
This stunningly original look at wealth, welfare and race may well be the most important book of the year. Oliver and Shapiro challenge conventional wisdom and uninformed dogma to offer reasonable, practical, and fair solutions to our society's inequalities. Their extensive empirical research, dazzling historical sweep, and evocative interviews detail the role of inherited wealth and property in creating different life chances of people of different races. -- George Lipsitz, University of California, San Diego
An excellent book. Black Wealth/White Wealth is very important for anyone seeking a greater understanding of racial inequality in America. By focusing on the ownership of assets, Oliver and Shapiro demonstrate more convincingly than any recent study the fragile foundation of the black middle class and the vastly different ditribution and accumulation of resources that perpetuate the racial divide. -- William Julius Wilson, Lucy Flower University Professor of Sociology and Public Policy, University of Chicago
As a treatise on the extraorindary poverty of wealth in Black America, this book stands out as an enormously rich gold mine of both data and analysis on race and class. It is a tour de force that will revolutionize our thinking about an entire range of issues from the historical legacy of slavery to contemporary patterns of housing segregation. This book has the makings of a social science classic. -- Barry Bluestone, Frank L. Boyden Professor of Political Economy, University of Massachusetts, Boston
This is a landmark study--one of those rare books that initiates a paradigm shift in research about race and class. It is as important as the status attainment research done in Wisconsin a generation ago, and the policy implications are very different from thoseof most books on race and poverty. -- Joan Moore, Distinguished Professor, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee
Their analysis provides telling insight into the causes and persistence of American racial inequality: government policies of suburbanization and redlining helped boost wealth for whites over blacks, while discrimination against blacks long kept them from developing assets through self-employment. The authors' study uncovers 'the buried fault line of the American social system'. -- Publishers Weekly
Black Wealth/White Wealth offers a powerful portrait of racial inequality based on an analysis of private wealth. Taking issue with those who point to an expanding black middle class as evidence of greater racial equality, Black Wealth/White Wealth demonstrates how an analysis if wealth--total assets and debts rather than income alone--uncovers a qualitatively different story about race in America. -- Carolina Times
This book will be of great interest to both social scientists and policy makers. Oliver and Shapiro challenge the notion that all Americans can now compete on a level playing field and offer bold proposals for asset development and redistribution. -- Sheldon Danziger, Professor of Social Work and Public Policy, University of Michigan
Black Wealth/White Wealth challenges assertions that the failure of black entrepreneurship is rooted in a poor work ethic and an inability to defer gratification. (Oliver and Shapiro) support strong affirmative action initiatives and anti-discrimination policies that directly address historical and current discrimination. They also advocate policies that promote assest accumulation for those at the very bottom of the social structure, irrespective of race...They are calling for a level playing field. -- Voice Literary Supplement
Melvin Oliver and Thomas Shapiro ... have produced an important, engaging, and nobly-inspired study of the economic bases of racial inequality in the United States. -- Business Library Review

Great Myth Buster
By C. Nguyen
This was very well written and had an abundant series of examples to support the authors' main point--with references to government documents, tables, graphs. Oliver and Shapiro can be extremely repetitive in restating their thesis, but, overall, the book was very eye-opening and perhaps a little depressing.

You'd make it a point not invest the majority of your wealth in the home and car after reading this book.

Miles to Go Before We Rest

This book is a fascinating study of the differences between the wealth held by Blacks and Whites in the United States. A historical perspective is provided, yet the book makes clear how the momentum of past actions continue though the present. It was this facet of the book that provided the greatest emotional impact. The authors did an excellent job of stressing the differential effects of income and wealth, and how wealth is by far the better measure for examining economic well-being. The data was broken down and explained according to education, income, housing, and many other variables. Case studies helped to put poignant "faces" on the facts to show how Blacks have been impacted by the differing conditions that they experience.
While it is not hard to find examples to the contrary, as I was reading this book, I noticed a growing sense of discomfort with the frequency with which the two races were discussed and compared monolithically. It is not difficult to view one race as victim and the other as oppressor within a historical perspective, but I found myself wanting to believe that it is individuals and groups in the present who decide whether to overcome adversities and utilize opportunities. Unfortunately, this book shows how much further the United States must go to achieve equal opportunities of economic mobility.
Published in 1995, the data within this book is now roughly ten years old. Studies published since then indicate that any changes over the last decade have been subtle at best. This book continues to describe conditions that continue to be both important and relevant. I have no hesitation in recommending this book to anyone, regardless of color.

Hispanics/Latinos in the United States: Ethnicity, Race, and RightsFrom Routledge

The presence and impact of Hispanics/Latinos in the United States cannot be ignored. Already the largest minority group, by 2050 their numbers will exceed all the other minority groups in the United States combined. The diversity of this population is often understated, but the people differ in terms of their origin, race. language, custom, religion, political affiliation, education and economic status. The heterogeneity of the Hispanic/Latino population raises questions about their identity and their rights: do they really constitute a group? That is, do they have rights as a group, or just as individuals? This volume, addresses these concerns through a varied and interdisciplinary approach.

Review
"That a majority of contributors disagree on a range of issues... makes this volume all the more refreshing... worthy of attention by historians, scholars of ethnic studies and Latino studies, and anyone interested in the general debates about Hispanic/Latino identity and politics."
-Journal of American History
"This diverse collection of excellent essays dealing with Hispanic identity, empowerment, affirmative action, and the people's connection to the political system does a lot to bring understanding to a complex group."
-"Choice
"Latino Studies as a discipline has undergone an explosive growth in the last few years, one happily marked by a multiplicity of visions that meddle without restraint in other fields--history, racial policy, immigration, jurisprudence, the culture wars--and raise urgent, inescapable questions. This volume is a generous sampler of eclecticism. That the reader is likely to disagree with several of the individual conclusions is an asset, for what unifies these essays is not their gregariousness but the rigor, passion and independence of thought they emanate, all of which are pushing the young discipline to unexpected heights."
-Ilan Stavans, author of "The Hispanic Condition
"This book will break new ground for the emergence in philosophy of ethnic studies not only because the scholarship is first rate but also because it fills a void in the current literature....will probably be required reading in the field for years to come."
-Oscar Marti, former editor of "Aztlan: International Journal of Chicano Studies Research

The essays collected in this volume represent the efforts of a varied and interdisciplinary group of scholars to come to grips with some of these pressing issues of identity, ethnicity, race, and rights. The questions arising from identity have major implications not just for Hispanics/Latinos but also for all citizens...For those serious students of these issues, this volume will be an extraordinary catalyst for future discussions and practical guidelines for implementation.

What do we mean by Latino?
By Jake Beniflah
Anyone really interested in answering the elusive question -- what makes a U.S. Latino -- should start with this book. It does not answer the question directly, but is does provide thought on the questions that may lead us to this multifaceted answer. It is a philosophical book, and very engaging. I highly recommend it to all readers -- business practitioners and academics, alike. This is a book on my top 10 list.

Revolutionary Memory: Recovering the Poetry of the American Left, by Cary Nelson

Revolutionary Memory is the most important book yet to be published about the vital tradition of leftwing American Poetry. As Cary Nelson shows, it is not only our image of the past but also our sense of the present and future that changes when we recover these revolutionary memories. Making a forceful case for political poetry as poetry, Nelson brings to bear his extraordinary knowledge of American poets, radical movements, and social struggles in order to bring out an undervalued strength in a literature often left at the canon's edge. Focused in part of the red decade of the 1930s, Revolutionary Memory revitalizes biographical criticism for writers on the margin and shows us for the first time how progressive poets fused their work into a powerful chorus of political voices. Richly detailed and beautifully illustrated with period engravings and woodcuts, Revolutionary Memory brings that chorus dramatically to life and set a cultural agenda for future work.

Review
Cary Nelson's Revolutionary Memory offers exhaustive scholarship of a genuinely lived kind, as personal interviews and rare artifacts of material poetic culture--texts marked up for performance, poems transcribed onto postcards home, scrapbook entries--reveal the meanings and uses of poetry in people's everyday lives and reflect this book's remarkable level of historical detail.
–American Literature

Poetry of the American Left???! Damn Straight. What Cary Nelson has done in this revolutionary book is to demonstrate that the old, contemptuous cold-war dismissals were based on plain ignorance. And he has turned the quite fascinating poetry of the American Left into a weapon to demolish the unexamined assumptions of high modernism, low pedantry, and middle-brow indifference to the power of political verse to engage memory and move people to act on their values.
–Paul Lauter, editor of the Heath Anthology of American Literature

Revolutionary Memory bravely seeks to remember a truly lost generation of modernists - partisan poets who protested working conditions in the 1920's, the rise of fascism in Spain, the McCarthyite witch hunts. Cary Nelson makes the unfashionable claim that poetry makes something happen in history, and in the process restores the poetry of the Left to central stage in American culture.
–Michael Davidson, author of Ghostlier Demarcations: Modern Poetry and The Material World

Cary Nelson, bad-boy avenger of our lost radical poets, is an angry critic; that's what makes him so good... Like an ace reporter, searching archives, attics, and used bookstores for evidence, Nelson locates the material culture of this tradition in the objects, life stories, and collective struggles of the poets; they offer the way to regain revolution's poetic memory.
–Paula Rabinowitz, author of They Must Be Represented: The Politics of Documentary

After a century of nearly complete scholarly silence about the poetry of the American left, scholars are now giving this revolutionary literature its due.
–Crete Reord, Crete, IL

About the Author
Cary Nelson is Jubilee Professor of English at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. He is the editor of the Anthology of Modern American Poetry (Oxford). He has co-authored or co-edited several books for Routledge, including Academic Keywords, Madrid 1937, and Cultural Studies.

An Incredible History of the Labor Movement through Its Poetry
By John DeLaurentis
If you ever wondered what the left, and those associated with the American Communist Party, were thinking, this book documents through poetry their suffering, their emotion, and their political passions. Often those who are linked with the left or the communist party are thought of as being aligned with the fascism of Hitler. This is a grave error! Many were involved in the fight against facism. These people were concerned with fair working hours and wages for the working class who were often abused by the steamroller of industrialism. We do not realize that the eight-hour work day we take for granted today was something these people fought for. This book does an excellent job recovering a lost chapter in American history. Nelson writes this history with incredible fluidity and grace. It is filled with many pictures of the poetry documents from his own collection. And despite the political poetry of this period being marginalized and forgotten for decades, it is powerful and moving poetry that serves wider purposes than just its historical context. There is a lot that people of our modern generation could learn and relate with to our current societal struggles. Open your mind and read. You will learn an incredible amount of information about these unsung heroes of our past.

Collective Voice of a Revolution
By Kevin Killian
In part because so many important documents and texts now appear to be lost irretrievably, through careless indifference or malice, Cary Nelson tells us right upfront there that is "no one story to tell" in the history of American poetry of the Left during the first half of the twentieth century, but he insists that there are many stories that might still be told.

Without a single narrative arc, Nelson's book isn't as dramatic a statement as his groundbreaking volume Repression and Recovery: Modern American Poetry and the Politcs of Cultural Memory, 1910-1945. He begins with a sampling of poems, beginning with Markham's once famous "The Man with a Hoe," that (he claims), the New Critical establishment wanted to will away, and from the patchwork assortment he moves on to a striking test case, a poet called Edwin Rolfe and the vicissitudes of his career. I had just about heard of Edwin Rolfe and had no idea of the extent of his involvement in various causes and poetics, but Nelson is not really interested in reviving the reputation of any one forgotten poet. He is more keen rather on presenting Left poetry as a whole, and the third part of his book really had me quarreling in my head with some of his decisions. He suggests that a good way to understand the poetry of the left would be to take various lines from various poems and make your own poem out of it. and he does this on several occasions.

I found the results singularly unconvincing and, of course, "nervy" isn't the word for it. A monkey, no, even one of my cats, could have constructed a stronger poem than the "poetry chorus" Nelson makes out of scraps and lines from a few dozen poets. I think emotionally I believe in what he is saying, but there must be a less self-serving way for him to go about it. (In this light, why, why, why on every page, whenever there's an illustration, must we get the same tag, "From the collection of the author"? Just put it in the front of the book and have done with it. Otherwise you're just asking for burglars to come to our office and take what must surely be the largest collection of left-poetry-ephemera ever publicized in one book.)

Part III dealt with left causes in general and how to make one poem out of them, but Part IV ups the ante by narrowing in on a particular body of work, the poetry of the Spanish Civil War (not all of it by Americans, in this chapter). Nelson is a brilliant scholar and the things he does with language are astounding, and never more so than the way in which, here, like dominoes, one simple flick of his pen causes hundreds of scholarly and popular misconceptions to fall down in sequence... he should be in the Guinness Book of World Records for two reasons.

Racist America: Roots, Current Realities, and Future Reparations, by Joe R. Feagin

Despite the apparent advances since the civil rights era, America remains fundamentally racist, argues award-winning author Joe Feagin. Racist America is a bold, thoughtful exploration of the ubiquity of race in contemporary life. From a black New Jersey dentist stopped by police more than 100 times for driving to work in an expensive car to the labourer who must defend his promotion against charges of undeserved affirmative action, Feagin lays bare the economic, ideologic, and political structure of American racism. In doing so he develops an antiracist theory rooted not only in the latest empirical data but also in the current reality of racism in the U.S.

From Publishers Weekly
Feagin's voluminous, relentless book testifies to both the strengths and the flaws of applying a sociological approach to the intricate issues of racism in America. Most social scientists, according to this sociologist at the University of Florida (White Racism, etc.) and president of the American Sociological Association, see racism "as something tacked on to an otherwise healthy American society." But Feagin contends that the system embeds racism at the core, from the Constitution to the legacy of slavery and segregation in retarding black economic advancement. He argues aptly that color-blind ideology "provides a veneer of liberality" for those unwilling to recognize how race has shaped America, while those who lump blacks with white immigrant groups ignore the effects of racial discrimination. But Feagin's approach surely sacrifices complexity. Are "racist pressures against interracial marriage" solely the product of white racism? If achievement tests are so biased toward the white middle class, then why do some Asian immigrants do well on them? Feagin calls for a large-scale educational campaign to move whites to confront "the reality of the pain that their system of racism has caused" and a new constitutional convention to incorporate "the group interests and rights of all Americans of color." He also calls for individual and group reparations for blacks. (But how exactly would a "black community" be determined?) Feagin doesn't engage those who argue that class-based remedies may be better than race-based onesAanother flaw in a book full of strong yet poorly articulated arguments.

From Kirkus Reviews
A sometimes searing indictment of American racial practices.Sociologist Feagin (White Racism, not reviewed) traces the development of American racism to its roots in Europe. Ideologically, race was not a major consideration in human endeavors until the beginning of the European slave trade in the 1400s, Feagin tells us. But some 300 years later, it had grown full-blown and become a major cornerstone of intellectual thought--dominated by such thinkers as Locke, Kant, and Hegel, and by the Frenchman Joseph Arthur de Gobineau. All of these harbored anti-black views to varying degrees, including the curious natural-law notion that blacks somehow were born to be slaves. Much of this 18th-century twaddle was absorbed by our Founding Fathers, especially by Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and James Madison. Feagin also examines Reconstruction, the lynchings of the late–19th and early–20th centuries, the Civil Rights era, and the post–Civil Rights period. As we enter a point in the new millennium where the white population is beginning to shrink, Feagin points out that less than half the population of America's four largest cities (New York, Los Angeles, Houston, and Chicago) is white. This and other factors lead Feagin to call for an international view of civil rights (i.e., one in which all are entitled to equal concern because all are human beings and not members of this or that state or tribe). Feagin, who is avowedly influenced by Franz Fanon and Kwame Ture (Stokely Carmichael), is at his overwrought best when he is in historical pursuit of the roots of racism. Perhaps because it is something not readily fresh on the mind, it is a matter of more than idle curiosity what Benjamin Franklin and James Madison thought about whiteness. On the other hand, matters such as affirmative action and reparations are too widely discussed and familiar to make Feagin's discussion of them very interesting or fresh.A useful study, even for those who are not guilt-ridden. -- Copyright © 2000 Kirkus Associates, LP. Review
This [book] explores its presence and how it's enacted, considering the economic, ideological, and political structure of American racism. The analysis offers many thoughtful points about how racism has permeated the system. --The Midwest Book Review.
[A] compelling book..
–Booklist

Joe Feagin's important new work fills a much needed niche in antiracist theory and practice. Racist America is a breath of fresh air in a context where much racial theory neglects contemporary social issues in favor of analyzing selected cultural dimensions of racism. In this compellingly argued, clearly written work, Feagin makes effective use of everyday examples to show how structures of racism affect our everyday lives. This book of racial theory not only demystifies systemic racism--it gives much-needed hope and clear direction for what we can do about it.--Patricia Hill Collins.
Racist America: Roots, Current Realities, and Future Reparations, by Joe R. Feagin, is a bold, thoughtful exploration of the ubiquity of racism in contemporary life. Challenges our complacency about the trajectory of current racial relations an sketches important paths to an anti-racist future..
–Sunday Chieftain and Star, May 6, 2001

In Racist America Feagin tells us how Jefferson 'coerced' Sally Hemings into a sexual relationship and assures us that Jefferson's paternity of at least one of Hemings' children 'has now been confirmed by DNA testing.'.

Thoughtful Academic Exposition Of America's Racial History
By A Customer
One reviewer practically foamed at the mouth ranting how Marxist and anti-White the author was so I expected some stereotypical book in which Whites are bashed, uniformly portrayed as evil, and the cause of all life's problems. Instead, I found an articulate and thoughtful academic approach to the historical roots of American racism, interesting anecdotes about systemic racism's "current realities" in everyday practice and possible anti-racist strategies and solutions. Feagin's ideological sympathies are clearly with the victims of racism but not, I think, to the extent that it distorts history or unfairly attacks one race. The book isn't about "attacking" one group unless you define attacking as recounting historical facts or current reality. So why did the other reviewer find it so offensive? The title - Racist America - implies to the superficial reader that all (White) Americans are racist and the subject - racism - is unpleasant and embarassing to the superficial reader ("Why not forget the bad and accentuate the positive?"). If you're reading a book, for example, on cancer, or poverty, or famine, you don't get angry, thrown down the book and say, "I don't have cancer. Most people aren't poor. Famines are rare," you recognize that that is the subject of the book. This book does not condemn America but its focus is on our national original sin and its enough to make anyone squeamish.

The Courage to Tell It Like It Is
By A Customer
If you're a racist, you'll hate this book. If you're an equality-loving person of goodwill who wants to understand how and why racism operates in America, you'll find this book to be extremely valuable.
This is a bold, provocative, innovative, and insightful book. Professor Feagin walks us through the history of racism from its roots in Europe and colonial America to its current-day manifestations. He shows just how thoroughly racism has always permeated life in America since the anti-black views of America's Founding Fathers like Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and James Madison. Feagin also examines Reconstruction, the lynchings of the late-19th and early-20th centuries, the Jim Crow racism of the modern Civil Rights era, and the new "color-blind" racism of the post-Civil Rights period.

Professor Feagin lays bare the economic, ideological, and political structure of American racism. In so doing he develops an anti-racist theory rooted not only in the latest empirical data but also in the current reality of racism in the U.S.
This book is quite an eye-opener!

Amazon.com Review
Richard Parker's Beneath the Equator is a groundbreaking anthropological study of male-male relationships in Brazil and the ensuing emergence of distinct gay communities in that country. Parker raises important questions that challenge Western ideas about same-gender desire and sexuality. In the first chapters of the book--using his own research as well as a wealth of other materials--Parker elucidates how gender, race, the history of colonialism, and the views of Western countries have all contributed to constructing specific Brazilian homosexualities. In subsequent chapters, he charts how these manifestations of same-sex desire form the basis for a series of distinct communities. Parker also discusses in depth the effect of the AIDS epidemic on Brazilian gay life and how different, culturally specific AIDS prevention strategies have been formulated and employed to deal with the disease. Written in clear and accessible language, Beneath the Equator brings together a huge amount of research and thought and presents the reader not only with a new, complex portrait of gay life in Brazil but new ways of conceptualizing sexuality and culture worldwide. --Michael Bronski

From Library Journal
Brazil has only infrequently recognized gay life. Cultural anthropologist Parker's landmark study unveils how the Brazilian gay community has materialized in the last 15 years. Using his earlier work, Bodies, Pleasures, and Passions: Sexual Culture in Contemporary Brazil (Beacon, 1991. o.p.), as a springboard, Parker delves into the evolving role of gay men and the lush gay fabric of metropolitan Brazil. Relying on over 200 interviews and surveys, Parker analyzes two distinct issues: the evolving framework of homosexual desire and practices, and the foreign influence on the social, economic, and demographic factors of gay life. Parker connects these developments to the wider processes of urbanization, industrialization, and globalization. This excellent overview is designed as the first in a series of monographs examining Brazilian homosexuality. Appropriate for larger public and academic libraries.?Michael A. "Parker's compassionate and clearly written study of male-male sexual relationships in Brazil is one of the most important works of the late 20th century to illustrate the interrelated elements of personal desire, oppression, local culture, and global phenomena."

"Parker's book is a dazzling portrait of a sexual culture in rapid change, but also an illumination of the ways in which sexuality becomes a focus of complex cultural forces, producing a rainbow hue of diversity."
-Jeffrey Weeks, author of" Invented Moralities: Sexual Values in an Age of Uncertainty(1995)
"Parker's analysis centers on multiple overlapping and distinct realities in terms of race, class, age, gender performance, cultural styles, or erotic practices, all of which inform Brazilian gay life. Parker delineates the contours of the urban gay world of Brazil by focusing on the growth of a gay-identified cultural industry, the superimposition of a gay commercial world over homoerotic practices, as well as the emergence of a gay activism as a consequence of AIDS...."

Lotsa information, detached from P's economistic explanation
By A Customer
What's best about this book are the data, especially lengthy quotations from gay Brazilian men. (Most seem to be from Jorge and Lino, although he claims to be drawing on 2000 interviews.) There's also unintegrated information about economics (neoliberal development) and "globalisation" that Parker supposes explains changes going on in how Brazilian gay men relate to and regard each other. There are also photos, maps, tables. Readers unfamiliar with the topic should begin with James N. Green's book _Beyond Carnival_ which provides the background to the AIDS era that Parker writes about.

"Brazil" is Rio de Janeiro and the northern port city of Fortaleza. Migration to regional centers and from regional centers to Rio (and on to Rome, Paris, and Lisbon) is sensibly discussed. There's nothing about indigenous peoples, or nonurban gay life. And nothing on lesbians.

This is the only book I've ever seen that has a list of maps, tables, and illustrations that does not indicate what page these are on. Obviously, this is the fault of the publisher rather than the author, gratuitiously making it harder to compare maps.(Parker doesn't do anything with the maps: there is no spatial/geographical analysis, just points of reference on maps.)

Being a Brazilian myself the book revealed Brazil to me.
By jojomipose@aol.com
Being a Brazilian myself I was very well and deeply impressed with Richard Parker's book. The accuracy, the revealing clarity Mr.Parker uses to describe the homosexual culture in Brazil is going to make this book a classic. More important, besides the impressive scientific accuracy, I felt a text written with love and compassion. Probably that is why my heart was impregnated with kindness and compassion towards my Brazilian gay friends;the ones still living and the ones in Paradise. I am sure God is blessing all of them.
