How the Irish Became White, by Noel Ignatiev

Ignatiev traces the tattered history of Irish and African-American relations, revealing how the Irish used labor unions, the Catholic Church and the Democratic party to succeed in American. He uncovers the roots of conflict between Irish-Americans and African-Americans and draws a powerful connection between the embracing of white supremacy and Irish "success" in 19th century American society.

From Publishers Weekly
In the first half of the 19th century, some three million Irish emigrated to America, trading a ruling elite of Anglo-Irish Anglicans for one of WASPs. The Irish immigrants were (self-evidently) not Anglo-Saxon; most were not Protestant; and, as far as many of the nativists were concerned, they weren't white, either. Just how, in the years surrounding the Civil War, the Irish evolved from an oppressed, unwelcome social class to become part of a white racial class is the focus of Harvard lecturer Ignatiev's well-researched, intriguing although haphazardly structured book. By mid-century, Irish voting solidarity gave them political power, a power augmented by the brute force of groups descended from the Molly Maguires. With help, the Irish pushed blacks out of the lower-class jobs and neighborhoods they had originally shared. And though many Irish had been oppressed by the Penal Laws, they opposed abolition?even when Daniel O'Connell, "the Liberator," threatened that Irish-Americans who countenanced slavery would be recognized "as Irishmen no longer." The book's structure lacks cohesion: chapters zigzag chronologically and geographically, and Ignatiev's writing is thick with redundancies and overlong digressions. But for the careful reader, he offers much to think about and an important perspective on the American history of race and class.
Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
In a book he admits raises more questions than it answers, Ignatiev, a radical activist and editor of the journal Race Traitor, asserts that the Irish were initially discriminated against in the United States and "became white" by embracing racism, a concept Ignatiev (citing Daniel O'Connell) says they learned in the United States. Ignatiev targets the Irish because they were the largest immigrant group to compete with blacks for manual labor jobs. Does American labor history dismiss racism as an element in the workers' struggles? Did oppression in Ireland under the Penal Laws help to make the Irish oppressors in America, or did they learn racism only after reaching America? While many of the primary sources support Irish racism, fewer support Ignatiev's opinion on where it began. This book is more a springboard for discussion than a source of answers but is strongly recommended for that purpose.?Robert C. Moore, DuPont Merck Pharmaceutical Co. Information Svcs., N. Billerica, Mass.

Review
"...carefully researched and often-illuminating." -- The New York Times Magazine

"I read Noel Ignatiev's How the Irish Became White yesterday. Amazing! What a work of history! I learned a great deal about Philadelphia history--re: Irish anti-black history. It has its resonance in police-black relations; and one can see May 13th an historical echo of the torching of abolition and Black Masonic buildings a century before and its subsequent (instant and historic) whitewash. Kudos to Ignatiev--a masterful (yet quite short!) piece of work. It provides a powerful historical perspective from which to view the City of Brotherly Love." -- Mumia Abu-Jamal

"Ignatiev writes with conviction. The book makes good use of individual case studies, especially of the Protestant Irish newspaper editor John Binns, and the Philadelphia politician William McMullen, to demonstrate the process by which the immigrant Irish 'faded from Green to white' in their new homeland." -- Journal of American Ethnic History

A challenging but worthwhile read
By Raven
This is a hard book to read, not because of any overdose of erudition or inaccessibility of the text, but due to the emotional reaction it can evoke from the reader. (This is easily demonstrated by a look at the other reviews.) If one has Irish ancestry, it's hard not to take personally. However, a historical retrospective of the social perceptions of Irish-Americans over the last 150 years is well worth reading. The shift in Irish-American image over time is fascinating; it's pleasing to see a group pull themselves out of disfavor and disturbing to see it happen at the expense of others in similar disfavor. Ignatiev illustrates the context of this perception shift well, with illustrative examples from events and news sources of the time. The book is moderately well documented, allowing the reader to search out further references at will. While there are a few points where the author oversimplifies for length and cohesiveness of narrative, overall it's an interesting read, and a reasonable treatment of a painful and complicated issue.

Never really got to the point
By M. Snyder
I read this book with great anticipation. I am a student of Irish American history and this book stood out as one that had great potential, but never really got off the ground. Ignatiev, in my opinion, never got to his point. The book rambled on about fire fighters and Philadelphia but never equated how this made the Irish "white." It really more argued about how Irish and Blacks lived together for a long time and then all of a sudden the Irish started to hate Blacks--but never went into any detail about why or how; instead it talked about Irish labor strikes--against other whites--and the political career of an opportunistic Irish politician/fireman. The book also glazed over the St Patrick's Brigade in Mexico and never mentioned anything about the role the Irish played in the Civil War, national elections, or the draft riots. This study is not "path breaking" as the back cover says but is instead incomplete at best. Shannon's "The American Irish" is a more complete and better told story.

Review
""Right-Wing Women is an invaluable, unprecedented collection of comparative, interdisciplinary essays. It illuminates both the scope of right-wing projects, and the centrality of women, gender, and sexuality to them."
-Amrita Basu, editor of "The Challenge of Local Feminisms: Women's Movements in Global Perspective
"In these essays, upstarts and activists break out of conventional stereotypes about right wing women, and force us to re-think our assumptions about political activism and women's roles. Writing from almost as many disciplinary perspectives as national contexts, the authors have produced a pioneering work about global gender politics."
-Claudia Koonz, author of "Mothers in the Fatherland: Women, the Family, and Nazi Politics
"The essays in "Right-Wing Women raise profound questions about the relationships between women, nationalism, and feminism. The book not only explores and expands this under-researched field of feminist and political scholarship, but it attempts to do this in a truly global way."
-Nira Yuval-Davis, author of "Gender and Nation
"If ever a collection showed the necessity of focusing on women's agency, it is "Right-Wing Women. This book is also a good read, one that will appeal to specialists and ordinary readers alike."
-Temma Kaplan, author of "Crazy for Democracy: Women in Grassroots Movements

Ignore the Van Driest comment. It is a collection spanning a number of nations and eras so some pieces are better than others due to differences in available source material, writing style and author bias. To write it off as such is foolish.

Amazon.com Review
This collection of essays suffers somewhat from occasional appearances in its pages of the plodding and pretentious prose of academia, but despite that fault, these essays on poor white Americans are, in general, quite interesting. To be honest, when the scholars trip over their jargon while explaining why Bubba and Jolene constitute a "debased other," it can be more fun than a free Pabst beer at the monster truck pull. Some essays stand out. Writer Michael Berube's memoir of life in a 1950s trailer park in Bayonne, New Jersey, is well-written and touching; and University of Southern California film professor Constance Penley's disquisition on white trash pornography, entitled "Crackers and Whackers" is bound to raise eyebrows. And Gael Sweeney provides the fitting finale, an essay entitled "The King of White Trash Culture: Elvis Presley and the Aesthetics of Excess."

Review
"[T]he essays in Matt Wray and Annalee Newitz's "White Trash: Race and Class in America forcefully peel away many common assumptions about the relations between race and privilege. The essays in "White Trash interweave the personal and the "objective" to demonstrate the interdependence of experience and knowledge necessary to understand as false what has to date been assumed as normative in our cultural identity: that "white" is both classless and privileged. "White Trash offers a slash-and-burn approach that others will appreciate, targeting the intersection of race and class in white culture as the invisible site of contradiction that allows whiteness to be understood as raceless and classless."
-"Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society
"White Trash...contribute(s) some important new voices to the current culture wars."
-"Boston Review of Books ..a new collection of stunningly didactic essays in cultural criticism...Welcome to the newest fad in academia: white studies.

From the Back Cover
Poor or marginal whites occupy an uncharted space in recent identity studies, particularly because they do not easily fit the model of whiteness-as-power proposed by many multiculturalist or minority discourses. Associated in mainstream culture with "trashy" kitsch or dangerous pathologies rather than with the material realities of economic life, poor whites are treated as degraded caricatures rather than as real people living in conditions of poverty and disempowerment. White Trash situates the study of poor whites within the context of several academic disciplines, public-policy analysis, and popular or mass-media representations. Arguing that white racism is directed not only against people of color but also against certain groups of whites, the contributors to this volume explore the ways in which race and class in America are often talked about and represented in hidden, coded, or half-realized ways. In so doing, they demonstrate why the term white trash itself embodies yet another way in which some whites generate a debased "other" through pejorative naming practices.

Excellent. Just Excellent
By Hyperkind
I read this book from an academic viewpoint, as I was a brand new professor (in 2009) and I wanted to get some background in teaching about poor Whites (in my Introduction to Sociology class). This book was a great eye opener. Not only was it informative, with excellent pieces of information and perspectives, but it was also rather engaging, and not at all a difficult read.

Now that I teach the Sociology of Race, Class, and Gender, I have been thinking about adding this book to the reading list for my students (using it as one of the texts). Honestly? The only turn-off is the price; I really don't like asking students to pays $40 for a book that is not truly a text but more of an anthology. However, I have to say, if you really want to spend $40 on a book that you would find interesting and could most assuredly be dinner party conversation, this is the one.

This is a groundbreaking examination by a pioneering author and editor
By Cleis Abeni
This is a groundbreaking examination by a pioneering author and editor. Annalee Newitz's investigation of the troublesome union of white ethnicities and low-income living touches the heart of socio-economic problems within America today. I applaud this book!

From Library Journal
Sociologists Ferree and Hess have substantially revised their 1985 work (G.K. Hall) by incorporating new research and updating statistics. The bibliography has doubled in size, and a useful chronology of the new feminist movement from 1963 to early 1993 has been appended. After setting the historical context, the authors describe at length the three most recent decades of the women's movement. They also document the many strands of feminism, the internal tensions, and the cooperative interaction among women's organizations. Despite well-publicized resistance to feminism (including anti-ERA and antiabortion sentiments and the feminist backlash) and the work left to be done before equity is achieved, the authors remain optimistic about the future and confident that the women's movement will continue to evolve and effect change in public policy. An important work for public and academic libraries.

Medieval Gentlewoman: Life in a Gentry Household in the Later Middle Ages, by fiona Swabey

This richly detailed account provides an important addition to current work on women in late medieval England, taking as its starting point the household diary of Alice de Bryene, a Suffolk noblewoman of the late 14th and early 15th century. Like Christine de Pizan, de Bryene enjoyed greater status and influence as a widow and owner of several large estates than most married women of her time, allowing her a remarkable degree of social and financial independence. Moving outward from de Bryene's own life, this illuminating work provides a vivid picture of the medieval household, examining marriage, education, patronage, and the private and public roles of the medieval woman of privilege.

The Real Deal from a Real Dame
By Kass McGann
Ffiona Swabey's "The Medieval Gentlewoman" is a terrific book for anyone interested in what life was like for the gentry in late 14th/early 15th century England. Her book is written based on household accounts and records from Acton Manor, the estate of Dame Alice Bryene, a widow in her 50s in the period the book covers. Ms. Swabey analyzes the data from the household accounts to give us a vivid picture of Dame Alice's life and the world in which she lived and conducted business. Despite the fact that it is heavy with primary documentation, this book is not at all dry. Ms. Swabey manages to tell us a story while retaining the accuracy that we historical reenactors desire.

A good look at a gentry woman's life
By a medieval researcher
This is a great starter book for those who are interested in a medieval gentrywoman's life.Ffiona Swabey is an interesting writer who gives us a general idea of Alice de Bryne's life, and consequently any gentry woman's life in general. It was interesting to see that although Alice was considered gentry, not aristocracy, and therefore lower on the wealth scale, this woman still had numerous estates, four personal chaplains, dozens of servants and hundreds of peasants working under her.

Daily life of a medieval gentlewoman
By Kilian85710
I bought this book to assist me in creating my character when I was playing in the Society for Creative Anachronism. I wanted the freedom to be a single woman, wealthy enough to live on my own without the responsibilities that great status would bring. Rich enough to be comfortable, but not so rich as to be a target for marriage to a man looking for a rich marriage portion, and well connected to men who would protect me without interfering with my life.

Alice de Brynne fit the bill nicely. As a householder and landowner of several large estates, she had more freedom than most women of her time, and she spent it in tending to her estates. Her day-to-day life was closely attuned to her tenants and their needs. According to her account books, her daily meals with her tenants were simple, with occasional meals more lavish than usual when entertaining visiting prelates or aristocracy. She knew the names and families of her workers. Hers was a familiar face in the fields and workhouses on the main estate of Acton.

In addition to being full of the detail of daily life, this book is beautifully produced, with many black-and-white pictures as well as color pictures. It is a detailed portrait of an ordinary medieval gentlewoman.

Creole Gentlemen: The Maryland Elite, 1691-1776 (New World in the Atlantic World), by Trevor Burnard

Examining the lives of 460 of the wealthiest men who lived in colonial Maryland, Burnard traces the development of this elite from a hard-living, profit-driven merchant-planter class in the seventeenth century to a more genteel class of plantation owners in the eighteenth century. This study innovatively compares these men to their counterparts elsewhere in the British Empire, including absentee Caribbean landowners and East Indian nabobs, illustrating their place in the Atlantic economic network.

Review
"Burnard's book makes a useful and worthy contribution."
-"The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography
"Trevor Burnard breathes new life into the field of Maryland's colonial history by providing us with a superb portrait of its native-born, Creole elite. Deftly uncovering the various layers of reality that gave meaning to their experience, he captures the distinctive duality of their identity, split between an ardent pursuit of British cultural values, especially genteel respectability, and a rapidly growing independence coupled with a commitment to local, provincial interests .A major contribution to the scholarship on early modern British America."
-Michael J. Rozbicki, Author of "The Complete Colonial Gentleman: Cultural Legitimacy in Plantation America
"This is a lucid, superbly argued study of "the lives of moderately well off gentleman at the edges of the Atlantic plantation world" that reconstructs the social and material contexts that anchored the identities and framed the behaviors of Maryland's elite.
."
-S. Max Edelson, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Book Description is Misleading
By J
The book jacket description listed here is misleading. This book sheds very little light on any of the individual Maryland families mentioned in the title. Its focus is on wealthy colonists as a class with little emphasis on the individual families. Furthermore, it is not really a study of the 'Maryland' elite as the title says, because it primarily limits itself to only two counties in Maryland. The book might be interesting to historical sociologists but I doubt that anyone wishing to learn details of old Maryland families would be satisfied with this purchase.

"A "tour de force that reclaims Derrida from the legions of unselfconscious parodists of Derridean style. The range of Norris's reference is truly impressive, from philosophy, to politics, to science, and his repositioning of deconstruction as part of the unfinished project of modernity is as persuasive as it is innovative."

The Queer Sixties assembles an impressive group of cultural critics to go against the grain of 1960s studies, and proposes new and different ways of the last decade before the closet doors swung open. Imbued with the zeitgeist of the 60s, this playful and powerful collection rescues the persistence of the queer imaginary.

From Publishers Weekly
The bold premise of Smith's anthology is that contemporary lesbian and gay culture did not begin in June 1969 with the Stonewall riots. These 14 essays by "scholars trained as literary critics" do not form a social history, but "employ the methodologies of textual criticism to 'read' the queer iconography" present in much 1960s culture. Smith's contributors cover both obvious subjectsAlesbian pulp novels, the British playwright Joe Orton and Mart Crowley's The Boys in the BandAand surprising ones: Valerie Solanas and the S.C.U.M. Manifesto, Dusty Springfield's career and the homoeroticism of Jim Morrison. Smith's instinct that representations of homosexuality were not only prevalent in 1960s culture but clearly set the stage for the gay liberation movement is persuasive, and her choice of topics expands the parameters of how "queer culture" is conceptualized. At their best, the essays make astonishing, even brilliant associative leaps. In "Give Us a Kiss," Ann Shillinglaw links surrealism and sexual alienation in her dissection of the homoeroticism of the Beatles film A Hard Day's Night. In "Myra Breckenridge and the Pathology of Heterosexuality," Douglas Eisner uses New Left politics and feminism to explicate Gore Vidal's work. Unfortunately, many of the essays are shot through with the jargon of postmodern critical theory ("Solanas's attempt to resignify 'scum' in her manifesto must take into account its previous use by dominant discourses"), which may diminish the readership for this notable collection of essays. -Jeffery Ingram, Newport P.L., OR, "Library Journal June 15, 1999
"Smith's volum examines the iconography of queer sexuality in popular culture during the deacde preceding Stonewall. Fourteen essays arrange in five subsections appraoch this topic through subjects ranging from pulp fiction and pop music to theater and film. Smith (UCLA) provises an introcution, and each of the essays includes substantial notes." -"Choice."

Afro-Caribbean Philosophy, Politics, and Thought
By Neil Roberts
Afro-Caribbean Philosophy? Is there such as thing? Antiguan scholar-activist Paget Henry makes this question moot by more than introducing the reader to Afro-Caribbean philosophical thought. He shows magically how the thought of black peoples in the Caribbean has changed not only the region, but the world. He dedicates the work to some of the 'anchors' of Afro-Caribbean thought(Frantz Fanon, C.L.R. James, Sylvia Wynter, and Wilson Harris), and also to fellow Antiguan Tim Hector(author of the literary column "Fan the Flame"). Invoking the Shakespearean metaphor of Caliban(the Arawak, Slave, descendent of both) from Shakespeare's "The Tempest," Henry shows how peoples of the Caribbean have had reason and rationality that has survived the Middle Passage and racist notions of European Enlightenment era philosophies. He starts off by framing the African philosophical heritage of the Caribbean, then discusses the work of Fanon, James, and Harris. He then moves on to the work of Sylvia Wynter, a critique of Jurgen Habermas's notion of communicative reason and rationality(a thinker whose discussions lack the role of myth and to a lesser extent race in the discourse of political philosophy), a Caribbean perspective of Afro-American philosophy, the state of Caribbean Marxism, and delves into Pan-Africanist thought. The overarching categories Henry deliniates in the book are two traditions of Caribbean black thought and activism: (1) the poeticists and (2) the historicists. Henry concludes with attempting to link these two traditions and show how futher contributions from Caribbean peoples can further humanity in understanding the relavance of black thought. If you want to be exposed to the world of Afro-Caribbean philosophy, run and pick up this extraordinary and challenging book.

Brilliance from the Sea
By The Sesh
Not just because the author is a fellow Antiguan, but because his work is brilliant he deserves nothing less that 5 stars for "Caliban's Reason".

First of all the text is incredibly well written, with sophisticated language and lucid literary skill. Second of all, it is extremely well balanced and objective in the telling of historical events. Third it is wonderfully scholarly and well organized.

Paget first introduces West Indian origins of philosophical thought in their African roots and then expands of the creolization of such thought under slavery and colonialism and the later African Renaissance that reaffirmed the African aspects of West Indian philosophy in the early 20th Century into the 21st.

From Booklist
Smith's basic premise is that direct democracy in the form of ballot initiatives is not as untainted by special interests (in contrast to representative democracy, that is) as its supporters would have one believe. He concentrates on antitax ballot initiatives to make his argument that special interests play just as powerful a role in swaying public opinion as they do in influencing individual legislators. Uncovering circuitous money trails and professionally managed campaigns, Smith argues that grassroots support for the initiatives was a facade. His detailed investigation looks at Howard Jarvis, California's Proposition 13, the Los Angeles Apartment Owners Association, and the United Organization of Taxpayers. He suggests that Douglas Bruce's fight to pass Colorado's Amendment I was nothing more than a self-serving campaign to create a fund-raising machine for himself. Smith's research is extremely well documented, and he provides a resource guide for those who want to learn more about the initiative process and current ballot measures. David Rouse

Review
Smith's research is extremely well documented, and he provides a resource guide for those who want to learn more about the initiative process and current ballot measures.
–Booklist

Smith's book is essential reading for anyone who cares about representative democracy in America. In this penetrating analysis of entrepreneurial populism, the author demonstrates that direct democracy--which is challenging the current system--may have at its foundation astroturf rather than grass roots.
–Alan Rosenthal, Rutgers University

Review
"This fine collection of essays brings together the history of the Spanish, Portuguese, French, Dutch and British Atlantic empires in a way that illuminates the tensions within and connections between them. In bringing together experts on all of these regions to present a work that truly encompasses all of the Americas, the editors have made a major contribution to the field."
-Laurent Dubois, "Michigan State University
"The fourteen substantive essays in this volume and the introduction to them, all crafted with impressive imagination and skill by careful scholars, demonstrate persuasively how applicable the conceptual framework of center-periphery analysis can be. The volume as a whole . raises challenging questions that enrich the study of early modern empires."
-David Barry Gaspar, "Duke University
"This collection is highly recommended. Specialists will appreciate the new work on debates that are central to their fields, but, more important, Negotiated Empires offers an accessible, comprehensive, and challenging introduction for non-specialists in one volume. It is a timely and welcome addition to the literature available on world history, Atlantic history, and other comparative or tropical concerns.

Quite a worthy book for those interested in aspects of the comparative histories of various colonial empires in North America. Do read the table of contents - where you'll find several essays dealing with Spanish colonial history - and decide for yourself, but as a professional historian I'd highly recommend this book.
