Selves in Discord and Resolve: Kierkegaard's Moral-Religious Psychology From Either/Or to Sickness Unto Death, by Edward Mooney

In Selves in Discord and Resolve, Edward Mooney examines the Wittgensteinian and deconstructive accounts of subjectivity to illuminate the rich legacy left by Kierkegaard's representation of the self in modes of self-understanding and self-articulation. Mooney situates Kierkegaard in the context of a post-Nietzschean crisis of individualism, and evokes the Socratric influences on Kierkegaard's thinking and shows how Kierkegaard's philsophy relies upon the Socratic care for the soul. He examines Kierkegaard's work on Judge Wilhelm, from Either/Or, Socrates, in the Postscript and Abraham and Job in Repetition and Fear and Trembling.

Mooney's poetic insights
By John Davenport
Selves in Discord and Resolve is without doubt one of the very best books on Kierkegaard in the last decade, along with books by Westphal, Rudd, Evans, Gouwens, and the Cambridge Companion volume. Mooney's style is so smooth and easy to follow that, even though the book's topics are often challenging, an advanced undergraduate would get lots out of this book in a seminar. Mooney links themes in Kierkegaard's pseudonymous works with ideas from recent work in analytic moral psychology, and also with ideas from several postmodern authors. He clarifies Kierkegaard's understanding of the development of the self like no other critic, and in the process sheds novel light on several of SK's most important texts. This is essential reading for all Kierkegaard scholars. At the 1999 American Philosophical Association conference in Boston, Alasdair MacIntyre said that Mooney's work was the by far the best he knew of those that discussed and responded to his own criticisms of Kierkegaard --high praise indeed! I recommend this book wholeheartedly.

very short book for the price - I am serious
By A Customer
not a bad book,VERY concise, more into (post)analytic ethics than continental writers.. just don't think its a five star work, too expensive for the limited size, otherwise eloquently written and may go into a list of helpful readings.

Selves in Discord

I've never been disappointed with books received from Amazon - by price or condition.
Will freely recommend purchasing any book from the Amazon web site. And talk about a selection of books to choose from by Title and prices. There isn't much I needed as to further information concerning the books purchased - there was enough detail for me to know the condition of the book, who was selling the book, and the price comparisons I needed to make a reasonable choice.

Testing Women, Testing the Fetus: The Social Impact of Amniocentesis in America (The Anthropology of Everyday Life), by Rayna Rapp

Rich with the voices and stories of participants, these touching, firsthand accounts examine how women of diverse racial, ethnic, class and religious backgrounds perceive prenatal testing, the most prevalent and routinized of the new reproducing technologies. Based on the author's decade of research and her own personal experiences with amniocentesis, Testing Women, Testing the Fetus explores the "geneticization" of family life in all its complexity and diversity.

From Publishers Weekly
At 36, Rapp, an anthropologist at the New School for Social Research, had amnio for her first, wanted, pregnancy. When the results showed Down's syndrome, she chose abortion, with much grief. Her experience led to 15 years of research on how women of many social, economic and religious backgrounds experience genetic testing and how they interpret the information this new medical technology provides. The result is a thoughtful, if concentrated, analysis that is rich with the voices of genetic counselors, lab technicians and geneticists; pregnant women who chose to be tested as well as those who refused; those who got "bad" results; and parents of children with disabilities. In addition to tracing how genetic counselors' focus on individual choice can mask social context, Rapp also reveals how women, with or without their partners, negotiate the important decision whether or not to undergo the test. One chapter dissects the miscommunications that occur when technical language is translated into the vernacular. Another chapter lays bare how expectant parents think about fetal disabilityAand resonates with one concerning parents of disabled children. Rapp concludes that prenatal testing puts women in the role of "moral philosophers," learning to think about statistical risk analysis in relation to the "natural" process of pregnancy. Readers unintimidated by academic writing will find this study a valuable exploration of the moral and personal decisions involved in bringing a pregnancy to term. (Sept.)

From Library Journal
Rapp, a feminist medical anthropologist who chose to terminate a pregnancy after learning that the fetus had Down syndrome, examines the social impact and cultural meaning of the prenatal tests currently available, having interviewed women waiting for test results, deciding whether to continue a pregnancy, or who refused to be tested. By observing genetic counselors at work and talking to families raising children with disabilities, she discovers the practical problems connected with testing and the different responses to pregnancy, family life, and disability in diverse ethnic groups and social classes. Her analysis of the intersection of reproductive and disability rights and their links to feminist and power issues is interesting. This jargon-filled and heavily theoretical work is not for women making decisions about testing, though; Lachlan de Crespigny's Which Tests for My Unborn Baby?: Ultrasound and Other Prenatal Tests (Oxford Univ., 1996) is a good choice for them. Recommended for academic women's studies and health sciences collections.ABarbara M. Bibel, Oakland P.L., CA

From Booklist
Rapp, an anthropologist, ably combines personal experience of amniocentesis with her professional expertise. She has interviewed women of many different racial, cultural, religious, educational, and financial backgrounds, whom, throughout her informative book, she presents as thinking and caring persons. How does a woman decide to have an amniocentesis? Rapp asks. She shows that complex, diverse, and contradictory personal, spousal, and social pressures arise and affect the pregnant woman. For example, what, if anything, does the decision to have the test imply that a woman will do when the results become available? Rapp also explores the role of the genetic counselor: how much of the relevant scientific information does this person actually understand and put in context so that a patient can comprehend it? This volume begins a new series, the Anthropology of Everyday Life. May successive entries be as good as Rapp's William Beatty

Ethnographic method, ethno(graphic) reality
By Sameena Mulla
How does one, as an anthropologist, write about amniocentesis? Rapp's work redefines the scope of anthropological inquiry helping us look at U.S. culture as an acceptable site of investigation. Focusing on both the "medical establishment" and the "clients" it serves, the book leads us into alternate worlds of creating/inventing medical technology, and delivering medical technology. It is not as simple as putting women through a standardized process; their are questions of individual need, race, spirituality, class, profession, family support, and many other factors that affect the process of amniocentesis and the value of the procedure to the women who receive or refuse the technology. Beautifully written, Rapp follows many threads, both narrative and scientific, to reveal a picture that is not quite so neat.

Interesting but inconclusive
By Nora Fussner
I read Rapp's Testing Women, Testing the Fetus for an anthropology/gender studies class, and as an examination of the way different ethnic groups in NYC approach amniocentesis and prenatal testing as a whole, it might be very interesting.
However, that is not what the book is about. The book is supposed to be about the impact that amniocentesis has on women's lives as they are faced with the decision not only to have the test, but what to do with the information they recieve. But Rapp was so intent on characterizing each of her interview subjects by race, occupation (hence class) and gender, that she ultimately separated and categorized her subjects in ways that left the reader hanging. She did not make any definite conclusions about amniocentesis, only that women make decisions about amnio based on values they had before they even got pregnant, possibly due to ethnicity.
If I were pregnant this book wouldn't help me at all in making a decision. But the chapters on how the tests are analyzed are quite interesting, and the chapters on disability and the way we as a society deals with disabled children in an age when it's easy for them never to be born changed the way I think about disability, and for that reason alone I think it should be read.

From Library Journal
In this follow-up to the path-breaking An American Health Dilemma: A Medical History of African Americans and the Problem of Race (LJ 8/00), the authors, both senior research scientists at the Harvard School of Public Health, complete their study of African American healthcare. While the first book concentrated on issues before 1900, this volume's statistic-packed and thoroughly documented narrative explores 20th-century advances in healthcare, the development of the insurance industry, declining support for public health, and the myriad social and economic factors that have had disparate impacts on the health of black Americans. Continuing a troubling theme from their first volume, the authors also probe the effects of racism in the medical professions, which led to pernicious eugenics theories and shocking medical experiments well into the 20th century. Both volumes of this landmark study are essential for medical and African American studies collections. Kathleen Arsenault, Univ. of South Florida, St. Petersburg Lib.

Review
"For those who have placed their hope in the 'future of freedom' and search for progressive opportunities in the aftershocks of the 1989 earthquake, pick up "After the Fall. There you will find a compilation of important voices on the left offering precious reflections on the last pulsating decade of the twentieth century.."
-Micheline Ishay, Associate Professor, Graduate School of International Studies, University of Denver
""After the Fall is without question the best collection of essays about the turbulent multiple crises humanity is facing since the end of the Cold War. Every essay in the book has a grasp on present reality without sentimentality. Yet the essays build from the radical project that hope for a better future is at the center of human progress and reconstruction. The authors will give many people, including those at universities, a chance to rethink what they are learning and where they might go politically and personally.."
-Marcus Raskin, Co-founder and Distinguished Fellow, Institute for Policy Studies and Professor, Public Policy Program, George Washington University

From the Back Cover
Did the United States really "win" the Cold War? Is the fall of Communism only a temporary setback for Marxism, or has the free market prevailed, once and for all? In After the Fall, many of the most important Marxist scholars and journalists gather to argue that justice and equality are more important now than ever. They worry that the last ten years have brought us plenty of global capitalism but not much of the democratic freedom that the world had hoped for. The years from 1989 to 1991 did score some pretty heady victories for freedom, but After the Fall argues that there is much work to be done in detaching the best parts of Marxism from the fallen carcass of Communism.

About the Author
George Katsiaficas is Professor of Humanities and Social Sciences at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, Massachusetts and editor of the journal New Political Science. He is also the co-editor of Liberation, Imagination, and the Black Panther Party (Routledge, 2000).

Cities in the Telecom Age: The Fracturing of Geographies
By Peter Marx
I have not finished this book quite yet but felt it deserved a quick note to give everyone a "head-up"! If you read any one book today for an insight into where technology is taking us - THIS IS THE ONE! It ties the internet and telecom together and explains in very studied ways where we were 10 or 15 years ago, where we are today, and where we are headed. Technology changes daily, so this book may become somewhat dated quickly, but it will be easy to update.

This edited book is an excellent addition to any collection of works concerning cities in the electronic age. Each chapter covers topics that provide insight and new ways of examining our ever changing urban environment. The references cited also provide a springboard for further readings on each topic.
This book is excellent reading for both the layperson and the academician.

Review
"If I am asked to recommend one book on modern Turkey, this is the one I recommend. Berkes is superior to all others because he alone examines the complex relationship between economic and technical change, and political and religious developments in the transformation of Turkey from a traditional to a secular state.... Even now, Berkes offers much that is new and critical to our understanding of modern Turkey.... It would be an excellent book to teach from."
-Professor Feroz Ahmad, Boston University

A comprehensive history of modernization in Turkey
By Muzaffer Muctehitzade
This book is all about the struggle given in Turkey towards modernization or Westernization, starts with 1750 and ends with modern Turkey. Very comprehensive, covering political, educational, religious and economical changes and birth of Turkish nationalism. A refresher book for the Turks and an exampler for other nations to learn from experiences. There are too many personages to know who they were, many similar names to follow in two hunder years of struggle towards modernization but author has provided clear cut phases in every part of the revolution. This book clearly shows the obstacle mollahs put on the way of modernization. When Einstein was putting a finishing touches to his theories, finally science was allowed being thought in the schools, all the story in this book.

A Timeless Masterpiece!
By muharrem sev
For anyone who wishes to study islam and secularism (especially in Ottoman Turkey) this is a "must read" book. Portions of this book was serialized in Dogan Avci's weekly "Yon" magazine in the 1960s. Berkes was deadly accurate in his political forecast....and it is a huge loss for humanity that he died in London and not in Turkey where he had wished to retire. Despite his warnings, look where Turkey is today.

Struggle for Modernization in Muslim Turkey
By ESMIKCIH
This book needs to be read especially now by all muslims of the world. Obviously, the muslim world has to change, strip itself from Islamic zealotry which interferes with every aspect of life, from education to justice. The first attempt to do this occured in the Ottoman Empire. The book is the story of the first modernization movement in the moslem world: its challenges, obstructions and results.
The reformists in the empire realize that religion and social institutions have to be separated since this was what Westerners had done. The reformists want to teach contemporary science in schools but here the challenge comes. No! everything is in Kur'an so we don't need to know that so-called science. Reformists attempt to outlaw polygamy but the same challenge comes. No! It accords with Islam. By and large, from the 18th century to the 20th modernization movement in Turkey faced this kind of challenges by clergy. Islam has been a religion that interferes with every aspects of life, every social institution so that it was necessary to separate religion and social institutions (secularism). Defeats of the empire to Russians and the West necessiated these reforms and despite the challenges, inch by inch Turkish instituions were secularized.
Today's Turkey, despite its flaws in democracy and economy, stands out as the most democratic and industrialized muslim country and a serious regional power. There are lessons to be taken from the Turkish experience of secularization and modernization for all muslim countries. And this book is an excellent start off.

From Library Journal
This anthology of essays by scholars, activists, and organization leaders uses studies concerning both male and female sex workers of primarily Third World and developing countries to explore the social and economic issues of the industry. The writers first define both the forced and voluntary trafficking of sex in terms of a labor pool that is often migratory and at times even unionized. Issues of race and morality also play a role in the status and legitimacy of sex workers. These writings also highlight the major organizational movements and conferences of sex workers since the 1970s, as well as discussing the effects of AIDS and other health issues. Much of the literature on prostitution centers on Western cultures or single localities in the developing world. Few works have presented as well-rounded a view of prostitution as this volume, although there is Nannette Davis's Prostitution: An International Handbook on Trends, Problems, and Politics (LJ 9/1/93). Recommended for large public and academic libraries.AJenny Lynn Presnell, Miami Univ. Libs., Oxford, OH

Review
"These studies provide a wealth of information and data. The analytical chapters that precede and follow them are enlightening."
-"The Progressive
"A provocative collection of essays on prostitution, by scholars, journalists, and sex workers, with a focus on developing countries along with two essays on Japan....While the authors strongly condem forced labor, they contend that law enforcement should address the question of coercion, not sexual activity itself."
-"Foreign Affairs
"Few works have presented as well-rounded a view of prostitution as this volume."
-"Library Journal
"Frankly, I expected this book to be depressing, if informative; it turned out to be exhilarating and educational. The international group of scholars, activists, and sex workers whose voices Kempadoo and Doezema have brought together shows us women as victims and agents of resistance, colonized bodies, and defiant minds, rejecting all received cliches about prostitution, whether the source of the cliche be academic, imperial, or (even) feminist."
-Lillian S. Robinson, co-author "Night Market: Sexual Cultures and the Thai Economic Miracle
""Global Sex Workers is an important new work on the changing global politics of sex work that will shake up anyone used to thinking of women sex workers solely as victims."
-Elaine Bernard, Executive Director of the Harvard University Trade Union Program

About the Author
Kamala Kempadoo is Assistant Professor Women's Studies and Sociology at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Jo Doezema is Project Officer at the Network of Sex Work Projects.

Global Sex Wokers
By A Customer
Global Sex Workers is a series of pieces by a variety of authors on sex worker issues around the globe. The term "sex workers" has been used deliberately by the editors and contributors, as it emphaises the work in sex work and to some extent avoids the stigmatization associated with the term "prostitute". The editors and contributors' perspective on sex work is radical in its opposition to traditional ways of approaching the question. Rather than advocating abolition of prostitution because prostitution always violates women's rights, the contributors take a more nuanced approach, acknowledging that some sex work takes place in conditions of oppression and indeed slavery, but that much does not. Furthermore, crimialization of sex workers, their clients and those associated with sex work (eg pimps and madams) hamrs the women involved in sex work, although such laws are often said to be for the benefit of sex workers.
The book exmines a variety of issues in the area of sex work - theoretical approaches to sex work; migration of women for sex work; sex tourism; sex workers' organizations; and issues of AIDS prevention and sex workers' empowerment. The chief virtues of the book are twofold: first, its global perspective is refreshing, in a debate that has so often centered on the experiences of sex workers in the west; and second, the focus on sex workers' organizations themselves. Much that is written about prostitution ignores the voices of women involved in sex work, and it is good to see that trend being countered in this book.
Countires discussed in the book include Japan, Cote d'Iviore, Cuba, the Caribbean countries, Thailand, Ecuador, South Africa, Mexico, India and Malaysia, to name some. The book will be of interest to anyone interested in sex work, though it is probably of most use to academics and activists.

A bright shining lie
By Seth J. Frantzman
This book claims to want to show the 'nuance' of the sex trade, so therefore it must use complicated words such as 'debt bondage' to in fact describe what is an inhuman situation where people are threatened with death and beaten and raped in order to be forced to sell thier bodies to pay off a non-existent death. Essay after essay encouraged prostitution as 'sex work' and claims that if only all prostitution were legal there would be no sex-slave trade in young girls and no forced prostitution. This is strange becuase in the Netherlands, where prostitution is legal, it turns out there is just as much sex-slavery and beatings and rape. This book also tries to claim all the talk against prostitution and the sex slave trade is 'racist'. But how it is racist when Thai girls are sent to 'work' in Japan and Russian girls sent to Saudi Arabia and Columbian girls to Spain is not clear. It is racist in the sense that rich Europeans, Arabs and Japanese are the buyers, but that is not what the authors wrote.

As typical of anything that is examined by academia this text has to dry all things down so nothing is ever what it seems. A woman who is raped at the age of 11 by wealthy 'clients' and kept chained to a bed for five years until she gets AIDS, this is called 'western sensationalism' and in addition is described as 'sex work' and 'debt bondage'.

It is too bad that none of the authors of any of the essays experienced sex work first hand as one of trafficked people.
