From Library Journal
Containing essays that were previously published in specialized academic journals or books, these anthologies conveniently consolidate important scholarship that the nonspecialist may overlook when conducting research. Mancall (Deadly Medicine: Indians & Alcohol in Early America) and Merrell (Into the American Woods: Negotiators on the Pennsylvania Frontier) have edited a collection of 25 outstanding articles drawn mostly from journals such as Ethnohistory, William & Mary Quarterly, and American Indian Culture and Research Journal. While not interrelated, the articles provide insight into various contact points throughout North America. Articles such as Theda Perdue's "Cherokee Women and the Trial of Tears" and Helen Tanner's "The Glaze in 1792: A Composite Indian Community" are especially noteworthy as they provide insight into aspects of the Native American experience that is often ignored. Highly recommended for public libraries and essential for academic libraries with Native American collections. The 15 essays in the book edited by Vaughan (New England Frontier: Puritans and Indians, 1620-1675) were all originally published in the New England Quarterly. The authors of the original essays were given the opportunity to revise their essays, and some also included postscripts to further enlighten the reader on their subsequent scholarship. While extremely informative, this book is a bit too specialized to be of interest to libraries outside New England unless they support graduate programs. Libraries interested in the Native American experience in New England might also want to examine Dawnland Encounters: Indians and Europeans in Northern New England, edited by Colin G. Calloway.AJohn Burch, Hagan Memorial Lib., Williamsburg, KY

A Deeper Understanding
By W Boudville
A dispassionate, scholarly look at what happened in North America to its native peoples when the Europeans arrived. The book spans 1500 to 1850, the latter being essentially before the American Civil War. It concentrates on events inside the present day United States. You should be aware that there is little coverage of Mexico and the Canadas. Lest you think this restrictive, remember that we are still referring to a span of 350 years and the US. Given this vast field in time and space, the book does not claim comprehensiveness. What it does have are chapters on numerous aspects of the encounters. Intermarriage, religion, trading, disease and, of course, war and the forced relocation of the few survivors.
There is coverage not just of the eastern seaboard, with the well known incidents at Plymouth and the selling of Manhattan. Also presented are chapters on the Spanish incursions and settlements in the South West. The chapters strive to go beyond the stereotypical, marginal roles played by the natives in standard histories. You can get some understanding of the intricacies of their societies and the range of their dealings with the Europeans. There is, though, a continual frustration; which is not the fault of the authors. The written records we have are overwhelmingly those left by the settlers. We can only wonder now at what was never recorded directly by the natives, and which has been irretrievably forsaken to the nameless dust of history.

Review
This is a thought provoking book that is intended to make the reader to sit up and take action. This is a must book for all academic libraries and a must-read book for all researchers who study this complex issue that is ever present throughout the world. -- AIDS Book Journal
This is a rich and varied collection ranging from cogent exegeses on ethnic cleansing and female genital mutilation to scholarly dissertations on human rights and public health. The essays are powerful statements supported by impressive scholarships enhanced by the authors' personal experience...Students, researchers, and scholars in the field have much to choose from in this work, which is augmented by an excellent index and detailed bibliography. -- William E. Seldelman, The Lancet
One cannot, one must not, approach medicine today without looking for its ethical component: read this important volume and you will understand why
. -- Elie Wiesel
Human rights violations persist in many forms. I hopethat these terrible examples will remind us that silence from political leaders, is what oppressors most desire and what the oppressed most fear
. -- Jimmy Carter
Without human rights people and their communities cannot be fully healthy. This remarkable volume explores the responsibilities of health professionals for promoting and protecting human rights, thereby promoting and protecting the health of their patients and communities
. -- Victor Sidel, Distinguished University Professor of Social Medicine, Albert Einstein College of Medicine
The value of the collection extends beyond its application to HIV/AIDS, in two fundamental ways. First, the papers widen the scope of one's perspectice of health . . . a matter of recognizing that efforts to protect human rights will influence positively the health of individuals in more ways that one. . . . Second, the collection provides a basis for acting in areas that, traditionally, have been outside the scope of health professionals. . . . A human rights perspective provides a normative basis for analysis, advocacy, and intervention on societal factors that predetermine health. -- HIV/AIDS Policy and Law Review
Health and Human Rights is a valuable basic reader, as its short chapters provide effective shapshots of areas of profound concern...the volume is primarily intended as a practical guide for professionals... -- Polly Vizard, Recent Books on Ethics and International Affairs
The reader is useful as a springboard for high-level discussions about fundamental issues in these fields, for both scholars and graduate students. Regardless of a reader's discipline or the role played in these fields, he or she comes away from this work moved, energized, and recommitted to the exhaustive, yet important, work of protecting the public's health and humanity's well-being. The complementarity suggested here brings a hopeful side in the form of a new way of defining and solving public health and human rights challenges. -- Health Promotion Practice, October 2002

Good Reference
By A Customer
This book was pretty thorough for documenting health and human rights in several areas of the world, apart from those in the middle east. A gross omission was the case of Iraq. It had an appendix with the declaration of human rights (plus others) for those interested in the "ideal" Otherwise, it was a great introduction into health and human rights.

A must for public health professionals
By A Customer
This book presents a terrific introduction to the role of human rights in public health practice. While quite accessible, some may wish to augment this book with additional readings- perhaps Just Health Care by Normal Daniels?

excellent book and excellent delivery service
By Iibarra
I rated high the product for two primary reasons.
First of all, the delivery was excellent, the book was in very good condition also, even though it was used. So, I got a very good item at the very best price.
Even the book is from 1999, it has very actual knowledge and is a strong reference book for the ones seeking the relation between health and human rights.

Jews and Feminism: The Ambivalent Search for Home, by Laura Levitt

By interrogating America's promise of a home for Jews as citizens of the liberal state, Jews and Feminism questions the very terms of this social "contract". Maintaining that Jews, women, and Jewish women are not necessarily secure within this construction of the state, Laura Levitt links this contractual construction of belonging and acceptance to legacies of marriage as a contractual home for Jewish women.

Exploring the immigration of Jews from Eastern Europe for America, as well as their desire to make this country their permanent home, Levitt raises questions about the search for stability in specific Jewish religious and cultural traditions which is linked to the liberal academy as well as feminist study, thus offering an account of an ambivalent Jewish feminist embrace of America as home.

Review
"Levitt's ability to range among the theologies of Borowitz and Plaskow, feminist theorists, and tractate Ketuboot reshapes the reader's understanding of the meaning of inclusion and equality...It is particularly impressive that Levitt can deliver such incisive and global critiques and still maintain models of hope and liberation."
-"Shofar
"Laura Levitt's "Jews and Feminism crosses boundaries and breaks rules to offer a visionary possibility for a feminist, Jewish cultural studies. This genuinely experimental work juxtaposes theology, a feminist analysis of liberalism, and a Jewish cultural analysis of emancipation to construct an original reading of being a Jew and a Jewish woman in the United States. Levitt's ability to create dialogues between feminist theory, the critical study of identity, and Jewish texts in order to investigate the meaning of "home" makes this work a major contribution to women's studies, cultural studies and Jewish studies. "Jews and Feminism announces that Jewish, feminist cultural studies has come of age."
-Riv-Ellen Prell University of Minnesota
"Laura Levitt's "Jews and Feminism is an eminently modern reading of the gender asymmetries that haunt the heart of Judaism. Original and imaginative, personal and theoretical, Levitt challenges her readers to reconsider what it means to be a feminist and a Jew at the end of the twentieth century. This book may not answer all the questions posed by its provocative title, but it asks them."
-Nancy K. Miller, The Graduate School and Lehman College, CUNY
..." an original and powerful contribution to Jewish feminist literature."
-"Choice
..." very subtle ... [Levitt] remind[s] us of thecomplex texture of the many ideas which make up our personal and cultural identity ... Coming from the cutting edge of feminist and cultural studies, "Jews and Feminism forces us to recognize the very specific and local content of all that we do."
-David Blumenthal, Emory University

Acts of Rebellion: The Ward Churchill Reader, by Ward Churchill

What could be more American than Columbus Day? Or the Washington Redskins? For Native Americans, they are bitter reminders that they live in a world where their identity is still fodder for white society.

"The law has always been used as toilet paper by the status quo where American Indians are concerned," writes Ward Churchill in Acts of Rebellion, a collection of his most important writings from the past twenty years. Vocal and incisive, Churchill stands at the forefront of American Indian concerns, from land issues to the American Indian Movement, from government repression to the history of genocide.

Churchill, one of the most respected writers on Native American issues, lends a strong and radical voice to the American Indian cause. Acts of Rebellion shows how the most basic civil rights' laws put into place to aid all Americans failed miserably, and continue to fail, when put into practice for our indigenous brothers and sisters. Seeking to convey what has been done to Native North America, Churchill skillfully dissects Native Americans' struggles for property and freedom, their resistance and repression, cultural issues, and radical Indian ideologies.

Churchill tells it like it is!!
By e-swann
Churchill refuses to let history be told as if native peoples either do not exist, or exist only as mere stage sets for some great movie Western.

READ THIS BOOK and see how only a word like "genocide" can be used to explain the history of U.S. relations with Native Americans, and how this same genocide continues to this day.

Churchill emphasizes the necessary connection those engaged in globalization strugglers in general must forge between their struggles and those of native peoples if they are to be successful.

Clear and concise, An excellent Churchill reader!

I Also recommend "Pacifism as Pathology".

Good writing, but I'm leery of the author...
By A Customer
What a dilemma! What do you do when a book is well-written and well-researched, but you also happen to be aware that the author is uncomfortably steeped in controversies over his own misrepresentation of himself, his occasionally violent behavior toward women and elders, and his crass dismissal of victims of violence through which he justifies the use of violent assault on those regarded as political enemies? (he teased that the 9-11 victims were deserving targets).
Well, I guess you try to be honest. You say "This guy writes well!" and "His research is reliable and worth collecting."
But then you caution readers that Churchill himself is unsettling to MANY traditional Native people who do not regard him as an authentic representation of an Indian voice or ethic, and you urge readers to research Churchill online in order to distinguish between a skilled collection of scholarship and an individual author whom some may find to be blasphemous to Native traditionalism.

From Publishers Weekly
Storytelling at all grade levels delights both children and their teachers, and this manual will undoubtedly be useful to teachers. Zipes describes his own ventures in classroom storytelling and outlines the process for teachers to follow. Particularly interesting are the variations of fairy tales that Zipes has researched. Without being overly scholarly, he whets the appetite, allowing teachers to develop their material according to time and interest. Zipes also includes useful material on the structure of fairy tales, as well as other types of stories such as the utopian tale and the myth. His final chapter gives suggestions for further reading that will extend the teacher's understanding of storytelling. A good "Notes and Sources" section and an extensive bibliography complete this concise and very useful aid to storytelling at all levels of the classroom. For academic collections.?Nancy E. Zuwiyya, Binghamton City Sch. Dist., N.Y.

From Booklist
Zipes is serious about his storytelling. His book is based on a program he has developed for schools and libraries in which storytelling becomes an integral part of the curriculum, not just an entertainment. After a solid discussion of why integration of storytelling in schools and libraries is a good idea, he goes on to discuss the different kinds of tales and offers specific telling techniques that can facilitate the kind of experience he thinks storytelling should be. In the last chapter, which is his very personal view of storytelling, Zipes looks at classic tales, so often featuring abused children, and correlates them to what is happening with child abuse today. Not everyone will agree with Zipes' methods or conclusions, but this is certainly thought provoking. Ilene Cooper

"This is a remarkable book, the best of the many books about storytelling that I have read... he [Zipes] has a programme and a clear sense of just what stories are and do... Zipes argument that storytelling can build an informed and critical citizenry and a cohesive community is presented with precision and informative examples...I cannot but admire his enterprise... From Library Journal
This volume brings together lawyers, prison officials, social workers, journalists, and the relatives of murder victims, who all have one thing in common: intimate knowledge of the machinery of death, that is, the rules and procedures leading to a decision to use capital punishment. Death penalty lawyer David R. Dow (George Butler Research Professor of Law, Univ. of Houston) and Mark Dow, a Brooklyn-based freelance writer, have compiled articles filled with compelling evidence that capital punishment is unfairly used against underprivileged minority males. Among the less surprising revelations are that everyone on death row lacks the money to hire a "Dream Team," politics often plays a role in the decision-making process, and the death penalty can be seen as a direct descendant of lynching and other forms of racial violence and racial oppression in America. Nearly all of the contributing authors express a concern for innocent persons being victimized through capital punishment. However, the evidence presented here also reveals that the true root of the problem with false convictions is the judicial system itself. Less historical and more an impassioned, firsthand survey than Stuart Banner's recent The Death Penalty: An American History, this book is recommended for specialized collections in criminal justice. Tim Delaney, Canisius Coll., Buffalo, NY
Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review
"A thoughtful and compelling book written by people who struggle on the front lines with the machinery of death. It exposes the critical fault-lines: how race and poverty continue to matter; how innocent people can end up on death row; and how constitutional rights are routinely ignored by state and federal judges. Anyone who wants to know how the death penalty really works in America should read this book.."
-Barry Scheck, Co-Author, "Actual Innocence, and Co-Director, The Innocence Project
"This volume brings together lawyers, prison officials, social workers, journalists, and relatives of murder victims who have intimate knowledge of the machinery of the death penalty.."
-Future Survey
"A compilation of testimonial essays brought together by death penalty lawyer David Dow and journalist Mark Dow, builds the case that the death penalty in any form is irrefutably and inexcusably not decnt. The editors bring together the voices of lawyers, prison personnel, and relatives of murder victims to bear witness to the reality of the death penalty in America.."
-Margaret M. Chaplin, M.D., "Psychiatric Services
"'Machinery of Death' maps familiar fault lines of capitl punishment: its condemnation by the international community; its randomness, striking innocents along with the guilty; its concentration on certain jurisdictions and not others; and its inherent and apparently ineradicable racism. What's new in this remarkable collection of essays is that each was written by a person who has seen the death machine first hand-- attorneys, prison officials, social workers, journalists, and relatives of murder victims-- and how that intimate experience altered theirlives."
-"The Angolite: The Prison News Magazine

Must Read
By A Customer
This book is a must read for anybody who purports to have arrived at a conclusion regarding the merits of state execution. It is not an academic examination of the pros and cons of the death penalty in America. Rather, it is a description of state execution arranged in a collection of essays written by people intimately involved in the process. The essays describe the process of state execution from the vantage points of capital defense attorneys, relatives of the victims of capital crimes, and even state executioners. It even includes the transcript of an actual execution that occurred in Georgia in 1984.
I give this book five stars primarily because I do not believe a person should arrive at a firm conclusion with respect to the death penalty on abstact pragmatic or moral/ethical academic arguments alone. One must first understand the process, the nuts and bolts, of state execution and how it affects those most directly and closely involved in either fighting against it or carrying it out. We are, after all, talking life and death. This book serves that purpose marvelously. Nor does it hurt that it is a thoroughly fascinating read.
Happy reading.

Vague and ambiguous
By Srebrenica Forever
In my opinion, heinous criminal acts must be severely punished. Crimes such as culpable homicide, rape and child molestation deserve the harshest punishment. It is vitally important that the punishment fits the crime. It follows then that crimes of gruesome nature deserve capital punishment whereas misdemeanour should result in mild punishment.
Irrefutably, the primary purpose of a given sentence is to deter people from committing criminal acts. Therefore, it is crucial that prisons act as a deterrant; otherwise the judicial system is purposeless and superfluous. Paradoxically, prisons in Sweden do not deter prospective malefactors; instead they encourage some individuals to commit crimes. This is because prisons in Sweden have frequently been likened to hotels and this is not an exaggeration. This is a fact of life. To my mind, it is preposterous to assume that these modern and sophisticated prisons manage to deter people from committing criminal acts.
A criminal has to fear incarceration, otherwise there is no point in maintaining the judicial system. Capital punishment is considered to be inhumane and ineffective. What we need to ask ourselves instead is are felons humane. Do they repent their atrocious acts? Admittedly, some felons deserve clemency due to mental disorders that may have impaired their ability to know right from wrong. Nevertheless, they should be sentenced to life without parole.
As is well known, many convicted criminals commit additional crimes upon release. Thus, given the fact that a great number of felons relapse into criminality indicates that there are serious flaws in our judicial system. There is no simple solution to this problem. However, there is no doubt that legislators need to be held accountable for making ineffective laws. Most importantly, prisons have to act as a deterrant. Vehement felons who have been convicted of odious deeds should either be imprisoned for life or sentenced to death. Abolitionists would argue that people do not commit abhorrent crimes unless they are deranged. This is true in some cases but we must not generalize. Admittedly, some dangerous malefactors had been subjected to maltreatment in childhood which later led to development of severe mental disorder in adolescence. Nonetheless, traumatic childhood does not justify psychopathy, it merely explains it. In sum, this book provides weak arguments against capital punishment.

Shadow of the Other: Intersubjectivity and Gender in Psychoanalysis, by Jessica Benjamin

Shadow of the Other is a discussion of how the individual has two sorts of relationships with an "other"--other beings, other individuals. The first regards the other as an entirely different being from oneself, but one which is still recognizable. The second understands and recognizes this other by its function as a repository of characteristics cast from oneself.

In recognizing how this dual relationship is reconciled within the self, and its implications in male/female relations, Jessica Benjamin continues her exploration of intersubjectivity and gender, taking up questions of contemporary debates in feminist theory and psychoanalysis.

Review
""The Shadow of the Other... is an impressive effort at building and integrating theory in the domain of feminism, gender, object relations theory, and intersubjectivity."
-"Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association
"Jessica Benjamin's latest effort to bring critical theory and psychoanalysis into a dynamic conversation results in many splendid insights. She defends her provocative claim that psychoanalysis is an extension of the Enlightenment, clarifies her own relational contribution to object-relations theory, and insists that harboring alterity within the self remains the ideal for psychic life. Along the way, she emphasizes the importance of undoing repudiations, of rewriting the oedipal and pre-oedipal in relation to gender polarity, and reminds us of the oscilliation of gender categories. In calling for a reintegration of the preoedipal into the postoedipal, she makes the matter of intersubjective recognition at once complex and urgent.."
-Judith Butler, University of California, Berkeley
..."tightly written and carefully argued."
-"Journal of Feminist Family Therapy
"A timely volume for gender studies programs, and for graduate programs with psychoanalytic components.."
-"Choice
""Shadow of the Other extends Benjamin's groundbreaking and influential studies of gender, intersubjectivity, love and aggression. Her original elaboration of intersubjectivity serves to intertwine feminism and relational psychoanalysis into a tightly woven and richly textured intellectual tapestry. What really sets Benjamin's work apart is her brilliant utilization of a systematic dialectical approach to her subject, always maintaining the delicate balance betweenopposing tensions: masculinity and femininity, subjectivity and objectivity, passivity and activity, love and aggression, fantasy and reality, modernism and postmodernism, the intrapsychic and the intersubjective. Benjamin's capacity to creatively play with intellectual ideas is unsurpassed as she continually spins concepts around, moving in new, unexpected, and surprisingly useful directions.."

Brilliant and compelling -- not for the feeble-minded or the faint of heart
By Elizabeth Grainger
As are all of Benjamin's books, Shadow of the Other is a brilliant work singular in its economy. Her insights into the intersections of power, gender, and the psyche are nothing short of spectacular. As ever, she avoids jargon; her vocabulary is precise and meaningful. I highly recommend this book.

Clear, concise, expansive
By Dr. B
The range of Benjamin's mind and vision is extraordinary. Especially in this post-modern, post-feminist, post-psychoanalytic age, we need to listen to her.

Not very clear...
By MSG
Benjamin's Shadow of the Object is filled with philosophical and psychoanalytic jargon that leaves one with the impression of being distracted from the absence of cogent argumentation. Not recommended.

Everyday Sexism in the Third Millennium, by Carol Rambo Ronai, Barbara A. Zsembik, Joe R. Feagin

This collection features new and original research on the range of sexism still faced every day by women in US society. It documents oppression across ethnic, racial, class, and sexual orientation groups in a wide range of gendered spaces, including the home, the workplace, unions, educational institutions, and the Internet. Exploring the way these different but related systems of oppression interact, the editors come to view sexism not as a static thing, but as part of a "dialectic of domination" in which women are simultaneously oppressed and capable of oppressing others through their discourse and practice. With its broad range of approaches, its focus on discourse and experience in gendered spaces, and its debunking of the personal and societal fictions of gender, this book goes a long way toward explaining why sexism is still so pervasive in everyday life.

Amazon.com Review
Every social movement that catches fire attracts a variety of odd bedfellows. Witness the battles against sexism that have been waged for several decades. While hard-core and dedicated feminists still see plenty to carp about, moderates and the faint of heart in both sexes slid off the bandwagon some time ago, convinced that women had, indeed, "come a long way, baby." While Everyday Sexism in the Third Millennium acknowledges some advances at home and work, it firmly negates the fantasy that sexism has been laid low. Unabashedly academic and slightly stiff, this broad-based collection of new and original research on sexism does a worthy job of pointing out its different offshoots, such as heterosexism and junctures of racism and sexism. Particularly ironic is the essay on an Internet discussion group formed to identify and respond to sexual harassment that degenerated into flame wars between a few men.

Review
"This is a very good book... it is a well-written, interesting and very topical book for everyone."
