God's Gym: Divine Male Bodies of the Bible, by Stephen Moore

In this strikingly original work, Stephen Moore considers God's male bodies--the body of Yahweh in the Hebrew Bible, and the Father of Jesus Christ, and Jesus himself in the New Testament--and our obsessive earthly quest for a perfect human form. God's Gym is about divinity, physical pain, and the visions of male perfectability.

Weaving together his obsession with human anatomy and dissection, an interest in the technologies of torture, the cult of physical culture, and an expert knowledge of biblical criticism, Moore explains the male narcissism at the heart of the biblical God. God's Gym is an intensely personal book, brimming with our culture's phobias and fascinations about male perfectability.

From Library Journal
Moore (Poststructrualism and the New Testament, Fortress, 1995) explores torture, dissection, and male physique. Unlike Howard Eilberg-Schwartz in God's Phallus (LJ 8/94), which focused on the known and unknown features of God, Moore states, "You too can have a body like his, if only you are willing to pay the price." Moore begins by graphically examining torture and the transformation torture can produce. "Dissection," his second essay, looks at the anatomy of the Fourth Gospel and an autopsy of Jesus Christ, i.e., Bible study. The last essay looks at Jesus' bodybuilding career and his workout routine. What ties these essays together are the subjection and control found in the Bible. A scholarly work for larger collections.?L. Kriz, West Des Moines Lib., Ia.

Review
"Bias has been transformed from something denied or ousted, to something that is to be recognized and controlled, to vital lenses for seeing anew...bias might be renamed slant, perspective, interest, concern, even ideology. Such is the case in Moore's remarkably engaging and sometimes outrageous three studies....."
-"Religious Studies Review, July 1999
"Stephen Moore may well be the most brilliant NT scholar publishing today ... And God's Gym is his best book so far ... This little book brims with fascinating readings, packaged in exquisite prose, and informed by sophisticated literary theory and cultural studies."
-"Journal of Biblical Literature

Exquisite, excruciating, and very entertaining
By graphik_persona
Not being either a Christian or an Exegete this book is still a great gore-soaked read. The attempt at modern-day analysis of the Bible is nothing new, but Moore's correlation between Biblical myth and body-building, torture and forensic dissection ports this book into a realm of the horrific. And for this reason I found this to be a very intelligent and entertaining read. Perhaps because I'm a fan of the horror genre in general, the detailed evisceration of the biblical narrative spliced up into fleshy parts centered on the knowable aspects of modern forensic paraphernalia as well as the intimate extremes of human suffering and vanity gave the essays an engagingly unique and in-depth approach. The persuasiveness of Moore's examination is both subtle and highly effected, yet one comes to the conclusion that it is meant to be nothing more than a clever interpretation by an overactive imagination run wild with impish conviction. Definitely a recommended read for those who want an interesting `take' on the Bible, or even better, for those with a horror-genre affliction looking for works whom lend that particular analysis towards even the most peripheral or mundane.

A superb study of masculinity and the Bible
By deafguy
God's Gym is a fantastic piece of literature. The author is smart, the writing is elegant, and while the book is witty and entertaining, it makes very serious points about violence in the Bible and the hypermasculinity of the god of Israel and Jesus as they are portrayed in the Bible. Moore uses comparisons that are strange at first sight (critical biblical scholarship set next to early physiology and anatomy writings about dissections; the gospels' descriptions of Jesus set next to the rhetoric of modern bodybuilding magazines), but the comparisons are highly thought-provoking. And again, Moore's writing style is simply dazzling. If you are interested in gender studies and the Bible, there is no better place to start than God's Gym.

Amazing - for those unafraid of the nontraditional!
By A Customer
"Whatever does not kill me makes me stronger... but Jesus says, 'Even what DOES kill me, makes me INFINITELY stronger!'" A terrific study of the archetype of "perfecting the imperfect human being" in torture, bodybuilding, and New Testament theology. (Yes, you read that right!) This might sound pretty wacky, but Moore has solid backup for all his points. Strongly recommended for readers who aren't afraid of a shocking but plausible look behind the surface of their beliefs! (Seriously, this book is WELL worth a look!)

Perpetua's Passion: The Death and Memory of a Young Roman Woman, by Joyce E. Salisbury

Perpetua's Passion studies the third-century martyrdom of a young woman and places it in the intellectual and social context of her age. Conflicting ideas of religion, family and gender are explored as Salisbury follows Perpetua from her youth in a wealthy Roman household to her imprisonment and death in the arena.

From Library Journal
In her study of the life and death of Perpetua, a third-century Christian martyr, Salisbury (history and humanities, Univ. of Wisconsin, Green Bay) examines the cultlike mentality that drove a 22-year-old woman with an infant son to turn away from her family and accept with enthusiasm a horrific death for her faith. Salisbury describes the social, political, and religious climate in Carthage that made Christianity so appealing to its disillusioned youth. In addition, pagan Rome's emphasis on magic and omens combined with the North African tradition of noble suicide to create a social dynamic in which public death in the arena would be viewed as not only acceptable but also desirable. Utilizing Perpetua's prison diary as well as an eyewitness account of her final hours, Salisbury analyzes the martyr's "passion," her recorded dreams and visions, in relation to these existing forces. The impact of her death on those who witnessed the event as well as those who heard about it became apparent in the veneration bestowed on Perpetua by her contemporaries and in the efforts of patriarchal church leaders like Augustine, who tried to minimize her strength and leadership qualities. This remarkably objective, insightful piece of scholarship is highly recommended for all public and academic libraries.?Rose Cichy, Osterhout Free Lib., Wilkes-Barre Pa.

From Kirkus Reviews
An insightful, moving account of the death of an early-third- century Christian martyr, based on her own diary. Vibia Perpetua was the daughter of an old respected Roman family of Carthage and, although raised in accordance with the pagan religious traditions of Rome, converted to Christianity, one of many faiths competing for devotees in the Roman Empire. Just 22 years old, she was arrested with several other converts to Christianity and, because she refused to acknowledge the divinity of the emperor Septimus Severus (and even though she was the mother of an infant), was sentenced to be killed by beasts in the Carthaginian arena. Salisbury (Medieval History and Humanities/Univ. of Wisconsin, Green Bay) uses the text of Perpetua's diary, written in prison, to explore this extraordinary young woman's decision to renounce her prosperous life and embrace a horrible death, and to depict in vivid and fascinating detail the world of pagan Rome and the insular community of the early Church, with its emphasis on prophecy and speaking in tongues. Salisbury notes the contrast between the Roman religion, with its thousands of household gods, and monotheistic/trinitarian Christianity with its claim to be the only universally true religion. Also, the patriarchy of traditional Roman society, which restricted women to the roles of wife and mother, stood in stark contrast with the egalitarian promise of Christianity, which taught that all persons were equal before God and often gave women a leading role. Using Perpetua's text, Salisbury shows that, despite the dangers, the young woman turned her back on her affectionate family and infant son to become a Christian because of her profound conviction that she was experiencing the presence of God. A uniquely absorbing and poignant study of the vanished world of the early martyrs. (11 illustrations, not seen) -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Very well written
By DZ
This is one of the best historical reads ever. It paints a complete picture of early Christianity in what was then known as Carthage. Of course this is about the Christian martyrs Perpetua, Felicity and the 3 men that were all sacrificed

a valuable book
By Theophanu
In Perpetua's Passion, Salisbury has served two different communities very well---those interested in early Christianity, and those interested in the history of women. She deftly creates a sociology of life in a group of early Christian martyrs, and does so in a way that makes very clear family relations, gender roles, and the strength of Vibia Perpetua herself. I have used this book when teaching a course on ancient & medieval women (and will do so again), and found that it worked very well. Students found it readable and useful and thought-provoking.

The Seed of the Church
By NotATameLion
"Perpetua's Passion: The Death and Memory of a Young Roman Woman" is the story of Perpetua, a young Roman Christian who was martyred in 203 A.D. It is a book well worth reading...but it is also missing something.
I found Perpetua's Passion to be very well written and apparently well researched. Joyce E. Salisbury adeptly explores and explains the Roman and Carthaginian culture that Perpetua lived in. Mrs. Salisbury also seamlessly weaves into this tapestry a compelling picture of the Christian Church during the time of these events.
The book is based off of the diary that Perpetua kept during her captivity. Mrs. Salisbury explains the significance of Perpetua's actions in light of the culture of her day. She then shows the influence of Perpetua's story on the later Church.
All of this is very commendable. I was most impressed by the scholarship and insight of this book. Yet a question forms within me when I contemplate this book:
So what? Where is the heart in this book? There is nothing in this book which says anything about how these events speak to the soul of people today. Maybe I missed it...
What happened to Perpetua was more than a clinical historical event that affected the people immediately around her and eventually helped form certain patterns of thought within the Church. It was much more. It was a mortal being making an eternal statement. It was a moment in time where the Christian truth that there is more than this life was given a full embodiment in the actions of a young woman--A young woman who had every reason to live, yet for her, to die was gain. It was a moment of ultimate surrender, and at the same time, one of ultimate victory. The blood of the Martyrs is the seed of the Church!
In the end, in spite of my objection, I recommend this book. It is insightful and instructive. However, don't just read this book with your head. Approach this one with your heart and your soul.

The "tale about the triumph of civilization has played a central role in shaping the American national identity," contend Frederick E. Hoxie (A Final Promise), Peter C. Mancall (Valley of Opportunity) and James H. Merrell (The Indians' New World), editors of American Nations: Encounters in Indian Country, 1850 to the Present. Twenty-three essays by academics consider the historical, cultural, religious and political circumstances of various Native American peoples. Melissa L. Meyer presents "Signatures and Thumbprints: Ethnicity Among the White Earth Anishinaabeg"; Sergei Kan explores "Shamanism and Christianity: Modern Tlingit Elders Look at the Past"; Ward Churchill discusses "The Bloody Wake of Alcatraz: Political Repression of the American Indian Movement During the 1970s"; and Terence M. Cole addresses "Jim Crow in Alsaka: The Passage of the Alsaka Equal Rights Act of 1945."

From Library Journal
Hoxie (Parading Through History: The Making of the Crow Nation in America, 1805-1935), Peter Mancall (Deadly Medicine: Indians & Alcohol in Early America), and James Merrell (history, Vassar Coll.; Into the American Woods: Negotiators on the Pennsylvania Frontier) have jointly edited this anthology of 23 articles, many of which were previously published in peer-reviewed scholarly journals. While not interrelated, these essays illuminate the experiences of different Native American groups as they have maintained their unique ethnic identities while dealing with the U.S. government. Especially enlightening is an essay by Ward Churchill titled "The Bloody Wake of Alcatraz: Political Repression and the American Indian Movement During the 1970s," which examines the history of the American Indian Movement (AIM) and its conflict with the U.S. government. This timely article helps put Leonard Peltier's controversial incarceration for the murder of two FBI agents into context. Like its companion volume, American Encounters: Natives and Newcomers from European Contact to Indian Removal, 1500-1850 (LJ 11/15/99), this work is highly recommended for public libraries and is absolutely essential for all academic libraries supporting programs in Native American studies or American history. Holistic and encompasing
By Sherin
I wrote a similar review for American Encounters. I have the same assessment for this book in that it is a holistic collection of narratives from the many perspectives and situations from Native American history post-contact. If you're looking for post-contact (and a little pre-contact) Native American history, this should be on your bookshelf.

Official Knowledge: Democratic Education in a Conservative Age, by Michael W. Apple

A powerful examination of the rightist resurgence in education and the challenges it presents to concerned educators, Official Knowledge analyzes the effects of conservative beliefs and strategies on educational policy and practice. Apple looks specifically at the conservative agenda's incursion into education through the curriculum, textbook adoption policies and the efforts of the private and business sectors to centralize its interests within schools. At the same time, however, he points out areas of hope for the future, showing how students and teachers have continued the struggle and are now successfully engaged in building more democratic education policies and practices. Finally, Apple writes in personal terms about his own teaching techniques and work with students which challenge some of the ideological and educational policies and practices of the Right.

Officially Angry
By Ceek
This book has changed the way I "read" education. For example, a recent New York Times article raised the seemingly innocuous question of what public schools were doing for their highest achievers in an age of preoccupation with raising overall proficiency. The article cited recent research by the Fordham Institute. Official Knowledge cautions its reader to question the institutions working to shape the debate on education reform, so I looked the Fordham Institute up. Sure enough, it was a conservative nonprofit think tank with an agenda: the reinstatement of large-scale tracking in public schools. Tracking has been abandoned for almost twenty years after an avalanche of research demonstrated that it encouraged de facto segregation. Connecting these dots, I returned to my reading of Official Knowledge, and of how Apple describes the political, cultural, and economic philosophies of the conservative restoration running through the veins of much education research and its conclusions. This book helps you understand the underlying motivations of en vogue education reform, and question their true goals.

Apple attempts to describe a conservative ideological alliance that is actively remaking American public education today. As an example of this, he describes how neoliberal institutions seek to reconceptualize "democracy" to mean the freedom of market-style choice. In such a model, the citizen is reformed as a consumer. Thus, reforming schools means applying the market rules to public education and allowing schools to compete for students. Unsurprisingly, this movement supports voucher and charter movements, and is obsessed with using supposedly objective standardized tests as a means of classifying and stratifying our students into "high" and "low" flyers. In this mechanistic view of school, students are parts to be fashioned for the machinery of the economy; the sooner we can separate the widgets from the lug nuts, the better. He goes on to describe how neoliberal goals align with the values of neoconservatives and authoritarian populists, as well as a new managerial class that serves to carry out the measuring and accountability such a system demands.

The book is not perfect. Apple's goal is construct a grand narrative of how American education arrived at its current state rather than linger too long in the nitty gritty of case studies. When empirical evidence is produced, he focuses on what I would consider to be sideshow targets--the history of state textbook adoption policies, or the rise of Channel 1 for example, rather than, say, examples of how Texas-approved textbooks whitewash curriculum and deskill teachers. In these cases, we're expected to take his word for it.

Nonetheless, the book is remarkable in its prescience. Despite the second edition being written at the turn of the millennium, Apple correctly forecasts the rise of standardized testing as the arbiter of students' "progress" and identifies the conservative alliance advancing an ever-encroaching accountability and market-based "choice" culture that shifts blame for students' performance from socioeconomic conditions to teachers and the students themselves. History has proven many of Apple's theories correct, and makes Official Knowledge well worth reading for anyone interested in education.

Good information, but porrly presented
By Kaytina
Good information, but porrly presented. The author uses passive voice constructions that make it impossible to figure out who is performing the actions--which, in a book about who has the power in education, is unhelpful to say the least.

Capitalizm is here to stay, Democracy is for those who can pay.
By Daniel J. Peterson
"Offical Knowledge" is an incredible book which serves many purposes in the curriculum debate. Teachers who are feeling frustrated at the burgeoning, trivial official standards being dictated by State and Federal Government mandates will take heart to know that they are not alone. Teachers are trained for years to facilitate learning in their classrooms, but official knowledge is becoming a script. The only way for a new teacher to survive is to march lock-step to the dictates of agencies which are driven by political expediency. The capitalist masses (mob) are not interested in providing a relevant education to all children regardless of race, creed, national origin or socio-economic status. Unfortunately, this capitalist way thinking is so entrenched in U.S. society, and the symbolic solutions which Apple offers will never be adopted by the mob.

You can't say enough nice about this book.....
By JM Showalter
I'm not one of the sort of people who falls often for heart warming. I'm too bitter, too jaded... too educated to be able to gush openly about kindly regard for many things. This book, though, deserves that kind of praise.
As you could gather from the blurbs from magazines, this is a hundred year old book that seeks to illustrate the lives of typical, everyday (not to say uninteresting) Americans. The book is short; it's stories are realistic. Thus, it gives great insight into our collective 'ancestry': a voice to the long-dead.
I'm inclined to think that every time I mentally want to destroy America, in this book, again, could be found renewed hope and exploration. In this book one can find the stories of Lithuanians who set out to cross the ocean, of free black women finding for the first time life in a segregated south, of Greek pushcart workers who end up with $50,000 in the bank. More or less, these are the voices that give our community continuity.... and, well, I'm starting to ramble and make little sense....
Just read the book....

The Bewitching of Anne Gunter: A Horrible and True Story of Deception, Witchcraft, Murder, and the King of England, by James Sharpe

In 1604, 20-year-old Anne Gunter was bewitched: she foamed at the mouth, contorted wildly in her bedchamber, went into trances. Her garters and bodices were perpetually unlacing themselves. Her signature symptom was to vomit pins and "she voided some pins downwards as well by her water or otherwise.." Popular history at its best, "The Bewitching of Anne Gunter" opens a fascinating window onto the past. It's a tale of controlling fathers, willful daughters, nosy neighbors, power relations between peasants and gentry, and village life in early-modern Europe. Above all it's an original and revealing story of one young woman's experience with the greatly misunderstood phenomenon of witchcraft. James Sharpe is Professor of History at York University and the author of "Instruments of Darkness: Witchcraft in" "Early Modern History" and other works of social history.

From Publishers Weekly
British historian Sharpe's (York Univ.) meticulously detailed reconstruction of a sensational English witchcraft case resonates with the modern era and throws a floodlight on the psychology of fear, gullibility, scapegoating, conformity and self-delusion. In 1604, 20-year-old Anne Gunter, during fits and trances in which she writhed, seemed to vomit and void such foreign objects as pins, accused three local women of bewitching her. Anne's supposed tormentors went on trial for witchcraft in 1605 (and were eventually acquitted). The trial was a dramatic affair, with Anne running through her repertoire of fits and symptoms, lying prostrate on the courtroom floor. Then Anne came under the personal scrutiny of notorious witch-hunter King James I, the king's physicians and Archbishop of Canterbury Richard Bancroft. She confessed that, under pressure from her father, gentry farmer Brian Gunter, she had faked her bewitchment to further his feud with the family of one of the accused witches, Elizabeth Gregory--a feud that began in 1598 at a football match. In 1606, father and daughter went on trial for false accusations of witchcraft before the infamous Star Chamber; regrettably, the disposition of the case is unknown. Sharpe views Anne's charade as a desperate attempt by an unloved, coerced child to gain her father's attention. His absorbing study is crammed with lore about demonic possession and the politics of exorcism, the European witch persecution craze, the bubonic plague of 1603 (which killed off one-fifth of London's population), demonological literature, Oxford (still a walled medieval city in 1600), daily life in English villages and the haphazard free-for-all of the early English criminal justice system. An interesting read....
By Dutch Dave
Fascinating tail that uses facts to dismiss some of the preconceptions about the 17th century 'Witch-hunt' era often mis-portrayed in common culture. Priests, Archbishops and Kings were not all idiots and could recognise the pretense of a bullied Anne Gunter!

More aptly, The Bewitching of the Bookworm.
By Jeremy
After finding myself enchanted by the superb effort constituting James Sharpe's Instruments of Darkness: Witchcraft in Early Modern England, I was eagerly hoping for a repeat performance with The Bewitching of Anne Gunter. And he certainly delivered. Intended for the general reader; I can't state enough how exceptionally fun and informative this was to read, and I highly recommend it to anyone with even a passing interest in Early Modern witchcraft persecutions. Kudos! Again, Mr. Sharpe!

history vs. entertainment
By andreas barth
Anne Gunter, a 20 year old woman, lived in the Oxfordshire village of North Moreton. In the summer of 1604 she fell ill. Yet witchcraft was not being discussed, but it was when the illness recurred on the 23rd of October and continued over the following weeks that people began to make more note of the symptoms. Doctors could not find natural reasons for her illness. The inevitable was thought and assumed - that she was bewitched. Anne vomited pins and other unnatural things, she had fits and trances and one time during a trance she named three women as witches that bewitched her: Agnes Pepwell, her daughter Mary Pepwell and Elizabeth Gregory. Agnes Pepwell managed to run away, but the other two women were tried for witchcraft, but both were found not guilty. Anne's father Brian Gunter took the case in front of the court of King James I. He was known as a witch-hunter, but during the trial Anne confessed that her father forced her to act as bewitched and also forced her to accuse the three women as witches. He made her drink strange things and she had to hide pins in her mouth in order to vomit them up whenever people were there to visit her. Brian Gunter and the Gregory family had a feud, which was the result of a football game some years ago. Anne's father killed two members of the Gunter family and got away with it. He orchestrated Anne's fits to have the family branded as witches. The King's churchmen were not fooled or amused and brought Brian and Anne Gunter before the Court of the Star Chamber in 1606 for perjury and false accusation.
"The Bewitching of Anne Gunter - A horrible and true story of deception, witchcraft, murder, and the King of England" is highly recommendable. But it depends on what you want to do with the book. If you expect a novel on witchcraft that is exciting, entertaining and full of suspense until the end - than this book might be the wrong one for you. James Sharpe, a professor of history at York University, took a very interesting historical events and narrates it in three pages. The other 227 pages are background information. The historian goes back to the Oxford connection of Brian Gunter, he explains very detailed what happened at that football match were the feud between the Gunter's and the Gregory's started. Other chapters explain terms like possession or exorcism. Everything that is essential for this case is investigated. The facts of the story are taken apart in it's component parts and the many names of people are a little confusing. There is also a lot of repetition, some things are explained more than two times. However, if you are interested in a historical book, if you are interested in witchcraft this book might be the right thing for you. If you are looking for an exciting novel on witchcraft you better should keep on searching.....

Review
"Reaching across a broad range of religious traditions and diverse disciplines, this splendid collection of essays breaks new ground in bringing postcolonial insights to a study of gender and religion. Equally important, the volume also compels postcolonial studies to take note of religion's role in sustaining colonial ideologies. The individual essays offer absorbing case studies about the power of religious discourse in containing feminist aspirations, while, in other instances, providing a liberatory ethics. Collectively, the contributors to "Postcolonialism, Feminism, and Religious Discourse boldly advance our understanding of how a feminist politics for the future is inseparable from a decolonization of religious ideologies."
-Gauri Viswanathan, Columbia University, author of "Outside the Fold: Conversion, Modernity, and Belief
"A path-breaking collection of essays that deserves a wide readership. This multicultural and multireligious anthology advocates a radical epistemological shift and opens up a new direction of research not only in religious studies but also in women's and postcolonial studies. A must read for anyone interested in emancipatory theory, ethics, and religion."
-Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza, Harvard Divinity School
"This collection of essays opens up a new direction in postcolonial studies as well as in women's studies in religion. Until recently feminist scholars who are interested in postcolonialism widely ignored the importance of religion to the sex/gender systems in the context of colonialism. At the same time, postcolonial studies of religion have hardly included the gender perspective. This gap is partly filled now....Authors from variousreligions, cultural and academic backgrounds share their critiques of the way religious and feminist knowledge is constructed as well as new and more productive visions for the development of discourses of liberation which no longer justify racism, sexism and colonialism."
-Theology in Context

Economic Justice and Democracy: From Competition to Cooperation (Pathways Through the Twenty-First Century), by Robin Hahnel

In Economic Justice and Democracy Robin Hahnel argues that progressives need to go back to the drawing board and rethink how they conceive of economic justice and economic democracy. He presents a coherent set of economic institutions and procedures that can deliver economic justice and democracy through a "participatory economy." But this is a long-run goal; he also explores how to promote the economics of equitable cooperation in the here and now by emphasizing ways to broaden the base of existing economic reform movements while deepening their commitment to more far reaching change.

Review
"Can cooperation and democracy supplant greed and competition as the organizing principles of our economic lives? Robin Hahnel wrestles relentlessly and insightfully with this profound question throughout this wide-ranging study. ECONOMIC JUSTICE AND DEMOCRACY provides one serious roadmap toward a more just and egalitarian society; and as such, makes an important contribution toward the revival of the socialist tradition.
."
-Robert Pollin, Professor of Economics and Co-Director, Political Economy Research Institute (PERI), University of Massachusetts-Amherst
"Robin Hahnel's book is an excellent overview of the principles of economic justice, and the practical and theoretical flaws of both capitalism and the various attempts to reform or eliminate it. But it's far more than critique; it's also a blueprint for a better society, and offers plenty of ideas on how to get there. Even if you're not fully convinced, it will make you think. And how many books do that?
."
-Doug Henwood, Editor, Left Business Observer
"Robin Hahnel breaks new ground here in articulating his vision of a participatory economy and-equally important-in showing how progress may be made toward this long-run goal within the interstices of the current capitalist system. Economic Justice and Democracy is essential reading for anyone concerned about overcoming the ravages of contemporary world capitalism and building a better society."
-Thomas E. Weisskopf, Professor of Economics, University of Michigan.
"Robin Hahnel's path-breaking book reconceptualizes our understanding of economic justice and economic democracy. This immensely readable and inspiring work should be on the bookshelf of everyacademic, activist and citizen who is seriously interested in creating a just and democratic world economy in the 21st century."
-Ilene Grabel, Associate Professor of International Finance, Graduate School of International Studies, University of Denver
"Robin Hahnel's new book, Economic Justice and Democracy, is an ambitious work of political history, a cogent critique of capitalism and its main contenders, and a visionary venture vibrating with hope and possibility. As such, it is a crucial book for our contemporary moment.
."
-Jules Boykoff, Whitman College

A brilliant, comprehensive re-casting of democratic socialist ideas for the Twenty-First Century
By Shayn Mccallum
This book fully deserves to become a key text in college courses on issues of economic justice and democratic political theory. Based firmly in the important, although historically neglected, libertarian socialist tradition, this text is an exceptionally comprehensive critical appraisal of late capitalism and the various attempts to create alternatives to it.

Robin Hahnel's principled, committed, non-dogmatic and thoroughly people-oriented approach to political economy is a refreshing and much-needed reboot on issues of democracy and justice that are still suffering the after-shocks of Cold-War era entrenched positions. Hahnel's socialism is of the thoroughly democratic variety that rejects both the compromise of essential principles for the sake of power that has often characterised social democracy, as well as the rigid, dogmatic positions of the authoritarian Left. The result is a powerful and convincing argument for a radically democratic model of society governed more fully "by the people and for the people", born of a flexible, pluralistic and principled approach to political-economy.

Readers of this book would also benefit from reading Michael Albert's "Parecon".

News from Nowhere
By Ben S. Leet
The late Victorian artist William Morris wrote a short novel about a man waking up one morning into a socialist world. He was transported instantaneously into a new cultural and economic world where coins and money were artifacts suitable only for display in a museum. Robin Hahnel's book is a counterpart to this utopic dream,
but unlike fantasy, it is a thorough struggle and wrestling with the idea of how to transition from a competitive and profit-oriented economic system to a system based on need and cooperation and human sensitivity. He deals with history of socialist movements, past and present, small and large, with reforms in taxation, labor standards, labor bargaining power, global imbalances, living wages; and he covers the anticorporate and environmental and consumer-producer cooperatives and poverty movements. It is thorough. Admittedly it would be better just to wake up one morning into that utopia, but this book is about the next best thing. I am grateful he wrote it.

Thoughtful analysis and a truly inspiring economic vision
By Joona-Hermanni Mäkinen
Robin Hahnel critically examines capitalism in its many forms and communist central planning, and at the end of the book introduces the vision of participatory economics to the reader. Hahnel's writing is eloquent and also accessible. Hahnel's analysis on Scandinavian social democracies is especially important these days, when reforms based on free-market-ideology are spreading throughout social democracies in Europe.

If you want to learn about economics, this book is a must read.
