Review
"Tom Digby has put together a fine volume of diverse voices on the question of males doing feminist thought in the U.S. Avoiding the pitfalls of naive identity politics and standpoint escapism, the contributors explore the topic as a set of problems through which theoretical, political, moral, and existential commitments can be forged.."
-Lewis R. Gordon, Brown University
"The wonderfully diverse entries in this volume investigate the tensions between feminism and manhood, engaging the personal and the political, the moral and the epistemological. The authors' explorations of the strengths and weaknesses of male subject position challenge simplistic interpretations both of the subject/object distinction and of epistemologies based directly on social identities. This collection makes an original and substantive contribution to feminist theory..""
-Alison M. Jaggar University of Colorado, Boulder
"Being written by men and women, straights and gays, transsexuals, andpeople of different ethnic and racial backgrounds, these essays represent varied responses to the question of men doing feminism... which makes it an extremely valuable collection."
-Christine R. Metzo, University of Kentucky

About the Author
Tom Digby teaches philosophy at Springfield College. His articles on feminist theory and other subjects have been published widely and he serves on the executive board of the Society for the Study of Women Philosophers and has also been active in the Society for Women in Philosophy.

Top-notch scholarship
By C. Kelly
I absolutely love this book. The contributors to this book are highly intelligent and thoughtful human beings, as is the editor. I would recommend it to, well, anyone...feminist women, (pro)feminist men, ANY men, intellectuals, and so forth. I particularly like the chapters by Kimmel (well, I like ANYTHING written by him), Hopkins, and Pronger. A truly amazing read.

Unique Perspective On World Music Phenomenon
By A Customer
The book is full of insight into "world music," which is mainly a marketing concept but also encompasses most of the world's popular music! This is an academic work that is also enjoyable to read and complements well those studies that focus on the artists and music, such as "World Music: The Rough Guide" and "The Brazilian Sound."

Review
""Pedagogies of Difference provides an important set of statements about the complicated nature of the relations between education and differential power. But it also goes farther. It shows possibilities as well as limits, and in the process helps us envision a more socially just education."
-Michael W. Apple, John Bascom Professor of Education University of Wisconsin, Madison and author of "Educating the "Right" Way
"Through eclectic models of inquiry, "Pedagogies of Difference rigorously reconceptualizes the link between difference and pedagogy as a precondition of refashioning democratic futures through teaching and learning. Visionary
By jessied
I disagree strongly with the reviewer who posted before me. The reviewer criticizes Irigaray for being an idealist-- but idealism is important, because it is what allows us to imagine a future where our lives are happier and the world is more just. Plus, this book is full of practical ways in which to think about implementing that vision-- like a discussion of what kind of laws the European Union would need if it really wanted to treat women as though they were equal to men.

This book argues that if we want gender equality, then we need to do some serious thinking about some fundamental philosophical concepts we have, rights foremost among them. And it shows that we can't have gender equality if the yardstick for that equality is always the male one.

Radical, not logical
By Amazon Customer
Luce Irigaray brings up very strong and valid points for the equality of opportunity of women in the workforce, but many of her statements seem to be of an idealistic nature. It places the responsibility on the employer to accommodate the personal desires of the employee. It also seems to remove the personal responsibility from the female employee in regards to working toward more satisfying employment. The generalized statements the author makes about women place limitations on the kind of employment she thinks would be appropriate, that the women would enjoy, and that the women would be good at. It seems as though Irigaray is saying that keeping women off of the corporate ladder is okay and completely acceptable because a women would not be good at, nor would she enjoy that kind of work.

"Schultz really shines in her analysis of political rhetoric. In particular, she shows how flexible rhetorical categories allowed disparate factions to agree...Schultz concludes with a very detalied analysis of competing definitions of constitutionalism within Brazil and in Portugal...a fine work that substantively advances our understanding of Brazil's transition from colony to nation."
-Judy Bieber, American Historical Review
"She is also to be commended for the dispassionate quality of her analysis and conclusions. However provocative the subjects, she conveys the perspectives of contemporaries with care and comes to her own assessments with judicious detachment. It is a welcome book, clearly written, vigorously argued, and potentially seminal. It is sure to endure."
-H-Net Reviews
"A remarkably interesting book about a long-neglected episode in South American history.."
-Foreign Affairs
"However much this study owes to the last decade or two of fashionable cultural history, it is grounded in a very thorough study of archival sources and published contemporary works....She is also to be commended for the dispassionate quality of her analysis and conclusions....This cultural approach and close ideological reading are an innovative contribution with clear potential for further work by others....It is a welcome book, clearly written, vigorously argued, and potentially seminal. It is sure to endure.."
-H-LatAm, Jeffrey D. Needell, Dept. of History, U. of Florida, April, 2002
"This book will be richly rewarding for those interested in the relationship between ideas and practice and between politics and society, both generally and during the transition from theearly modern to the modern age.."

Amazon.com Review
For many homosexuals the images of the nelly queen or the butch and femme dykes generated anxiety because they too closely resembled negative stereotypes held by heterosexuals. But over the past three decades the lesbian and gay movement has made great strides in accepting a wide diversity of sexual identities and behaviors within its own ranks. Self expression became valued over perceived acceptability. In Femme, Laura Harris and Elizabeth Crocker continue this project of exploring diversity. These 18 essays, interviews, and true-life testimonies--from writers such as Joan Nestle and Jewelle Gome--look at what it has meant to be a femme lesbian living during the 20th century. At times academic, yet always accessible and readable, Femme blends political analysis, history, and stirring manifesto to give the lipstick and high-heel-wearing femme her due.

Review
Harris and Crocker's femme, newly liberatied from the butch-femme dyad, flaunts her lipstick, her sexual agency, and her association with the historical practices of women as a liberatory model. -- Sue-Ellen Case, Signs
Harris and Crocker proffer butch-femme role playing as a continuing corrective to the gendered critique of feminism. -- Sue-Ellen Case, University of California, Signs

Why Buy It? Because I said so!
By A Customer
Feminists, Lesbians, and Bad Girls alike will enjoy this book whether or not they identify as Femme. This text serves to focus attention on Femme issues and could be of use to anyone - queer, questioning, straight, etc. who is searching for a broader understanding of the topic. By that same token, it could also be a good resource for butches who are in need of a little "schooling" (you know we love you!). While I preferred the less academic contributions, the text in its entirety would be an excellent addition to any Lesbian or Women Studies class. I appreciate the editors efforts to include voices from diverse backgrounds, styles, and perspectives. I especially liked the contributions of Gaby Sandoval and Lisa Ortiz who used a more narrative, casual style and spoke of personal experiences. It is always a pleasure to read works by well-known authors, yet it is important for new voices to have a venue in which to be heard. Harris and Crocker have done a fine job mixing such a wide variety of styles. This book has something to offer everyone and is a must for Lesbian/Gay collectors.

Amazon.com Review
If you thought Nazism died with Hitler, think again. In The Beast Reawakens, journalist Martin A. Lee traces the resurgence of fascist ideals from the prominent Nazis who escaped prosecution following World War II to the present-day incidents of right-wing violence in Europe and America. One only has to look at the current situation in the Balkans to see that fascism is alive and well. Lee begins his troubling account by reminding us of the many prominent Nazis who, after the war, built new and profitable lives for themselves fomenting political intrigue, while providing role models to a new generation of neo-Nazis all around the world. This underground Nazi culture might have remained out of sight had it not been for the fall of Communism. In the confusion following the end of the Cold War, right-wing nationalist movements sprang up all over Europe, taking root especially deep in formerly communist areas such as Croatia, Bosnia, and Romania.

According to Lee, "the Beast" doesn't restrict itself to Eastern Europe by any means; skinhead violence against immigrants is on the rise in Germany, while right-wing politicians in France, Italy, and other western European countries are increasingly finding a willing audience for their national and racial polemics. And lest American readers be lulled into a false sense of security, Lee warns that the United States is hardly immune to this kind of hateful rhetoric. He warns that many of the militia groups currently operating today share the same glorified attitude toward violence, the same irrational hatred of foreigners and ethnic minorities that mark the worst excesses of fascism in Europe.

From Library Journal
Lee (Acid Dreams: The CIA, LSD, and the Sixties, Grove Atlantic, 1987) traces neo-Nazism from the fall of the Third Reich to Oklahoma City. In this journalistic account, he uses certain personalities to trace a continuous thread of fascism over the 50 years. One of his main characters is Otto Skorzeny, the daring SS officer who became a favorite of Adolf Hitler. Skorzeny helped many Nazis escape from Germany and others gain positions in the intelligence agencies of the superpowers at the beginning of the Cold War. Lee has written a compelling work that should find an audience in public libraries, especially in light of recent interest in militia groups.?Dennis L. Noble, North Olympic Lib. System, Port Angeles, Wash.
Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Lee's work chronicles the activities, publications, and Fuhrer-imitators active since 1945 in Germany mainly, and in France, Belgium, the U.S., and Russia peripherally. Lee splits the fascists into two generations: those unregenerate ones who survived the defeat and their present-day admirers. A connecting figure between the generations was Otto Remer, a self-important SS kook whose claim to fame was suppressing the anti-Hitler coup in 1944. Neo-Nazi groups loved to listen to that bedtime story, and Remer obliged them for decades until he died in the 1980s. Lee also tracks the profitable postwar life in exile in Spain of Otto Skorzeny (commando rescuer of Mussolini) and connects him with the pro-Nazi sentiment of some Arab leaders in the 1960s. Lest readers dismiss this as dusty history, Lee convinces, through thorough research of what must be turgid contemporary fascist literature, that current advocates of ein Reich, ein Volk, und ein Fuhrer are a violent and odious lot, however debatable their actual threat may be. A sentinel against complacency, Lee keeps tabs on the fringe. Gilbert Taylor

Gripping but not very well researched
By A Customer
I bought this book on travels through Africa. Although I do like the authors journalistic way of writing I was often amazed at the lack of research and how quick the author is to blame or report conspiracies founded on far out evidence. Especially two "proofs" for the modern day Nazi horrors in Germany and Austria baffeled me - both were widely media covered scandals here and I am very surprised that the author accepted them at face value without reading on, so to speak. The first one was that in a VAPO conspiracy Vienna's ex mayor Helmut Zilk was send a letter bomb and had his arm crippled and that the very same VAPO was responsible for the bomb killings of several gypsies in Austria (pg.371)- both of these attacks were later found out to be the work of a menatlly insane right winger (with no political group, party or organization behind him) Franz Fuchs. Secondly the author states as a proof of Nazi horror the incident of a wheelchair bound girl who was attacked by Neonazis who made her shout Nazi slogans and then slashed two swastikas into her cheeks (pg.376) - that unfortunatly never happened either. The girl really did it herself to gain attention. I am aware of a lot of Neo Nazi activity in Germany and Austria but I think when writing such a book one should be careful to check the facts - and both of the above mentioned incidents were Europe wide scandals and since the author apparently missed to check on these big scandals, I wonder if all the statistics and numbers he pulls out of nowhere are right. I myself bought it in the belief that this was serious literature - but instead it is badly researched and quick in judgements based on nothing. I think writing a "historical explanation" on the basis of a tremendous lack of research is counter productive not only for citizens of Germany and Austria but also an insult to others.

A Look at the Neo-Nazi Underground - Severely Marred by Left Wing Hysteria.
By New Age of Barbarism
The book _The Beast Reawakens: Fascism's Resurgence from Hitler's Spymasters to Today's Neo-Nazi Groups and Right-Wing Extremists_, first published in 1997 and revised in 2000, by journalist and author Martin A. Lee is an account of the Neo-Nazi underground. Unfortunately, while this account does contain some useful information, it is highly biased and severely marred by left wing moralizing, manic anti-Germanism and anti-Russianism, and McCarthyism in reverse. As such, the author essentially presents a conspiracy theory arguing that Nazis are at root behind various disparate right wing movements (which he all connects together) while at the same time mocking those who adhere to "anti-government conspiracy theories". The author is extremely biased in his account and views Nazism as the single greatest evil ever to exist on earth. As such, he will take any position against it, including cozying up to the former Soviets, arguing that the fall of the Berlin Wall was not a good thing, or taking the side of America against Europe. Further, the author apes the rhetoric of right-wing populism by maintaining that those who oppose globalization are the same as those who promote it (somehow?). The author further believes in a militia conspiracy blaming the militias for the Oklahoma City Bombing quoting extensively from such dubious pro-communist sources as The Southern Poverty Law Center and the British anti-fascist journal _The Searchlight_. As such, this book can only be profitably read if one is capable of sorting through the author's sickening biases and sanctimonious moralizing. However, in many respects this book contains some of the same information as is to be found in _Dreamer of the Day_ (1999) by Kevin Coogan which fortunately spares us the moralizing and bias.

The book begins with the author's ranting Preface in which he argues that fascism and right-wing violence are on the rise. He proposes a conspiracy theory behind this linking disparate and separate far right movements together. However, he completely ignores violence committed in other forms and left-wing violence. The author then turns in this first part of this book to "A Surfeit of Spies" in which he discusses various spies of the Nazis. In the first chapter, the author discusses "Shifting Alliances", mentioning Otto Skorzeny ("Scarface"), the Gehlin Org, and ODESSA and the complicated relationship between the former Nazis, the United States, and the Soviet Union following the end of the Second World War and the beginning of the Cold War. The author maintains that former Nazis were recruited by U.S. intelligence and played an important role in the Cold War. The second chapter is entitled "The Seesaw Strategy" and maintains that the fascists tried to steer a middle course between the United States and the Soviet state playing one against the other. The author discusses such things as Hitler's bodyguard Otto Ernst Remer, Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, Leon Degrelle and the Nazis in Madrid and South America, and various attempts of Nazi spooks to join up with Soviets and other "Bolsheviks of the right". The third chapter is entitled "Neo-Nazi Disaspora". Here, the author traces the role of Neo-Nazism as it spread to America and notes the involvement of certain obscure individuals in various Nazi type cult organizations. The author mentions such individuals as Harold Keith Thompson and the National Renaissance Party, Francis Parker Yockey (a super-intelligent mystery man who had obscure links to the Soviets and advocated a pan-European Imperium) and the European Liberation Front, and the rise of Juan Peron in Argentina. The second part of this book is entitled "Political Soldiers". In a chapter entitled "The Swastika and the Crescent", the author notes the relationship between Neo-Nazis and the Arab world mentioning in particular Nasser's Egypt. In the following chapter entitled "Nostalgics and Revisionists", the author again focuses on Yockey explaining the role of Willis Carto founder of the Liberty Lobby and others. The author discusses the brazen Neo-Nazi George Lincoln Rockwell founder of the American Nazi Party as well as various movements in Europe. In particular, the author mentions the role of the Jeune Europe movement of Jean-Francois Thiriart (a reaction against American imperialism) and notes the increasing tendency among the far right of the period to flirt with the left, both in terms of Soviet communism and a Third World resurgence in an effort to overcome the onslaught of American imperialism. Such flirtations with the left led to problematic areas when for example Juan Peron who was brought into power on a populist coalition of left and right turned on his left wing supporters. Following this, is a chapter entitled "A Gathering Storm" discussing some of the "New Right" movements. The author discusses various problems faced by a post-war Germany, the French New Right including mention of Alain de Benoist (however the author despicably tries to blame de Benoist for anti-immigrant violence committed by Le Pen's movement despite the fact that de Benoist specifically avoided such issues), and a Brown and Green alliance in a post-war Germany. The author also discusses the rise of the Liberty Lobby in the United States, its alleged relation to the Republican Party, and the role of the Institute for Historical Review and the journal _The Spotlight_ under Carto. The third part of this book is entitled "Post Cold-War Fascism". The first chapter in this part is entitled "Germany Reunited". Unfortunately, here the author gives vent to some of the worst anti-Germanic sentiment, blaming problems faced by the reunited Germany and economic hardships on the fall of the Berlin Wall and maintaining that poor Germany has not been sufficiently punished for her supposed crimes. The second chapter in this part is entitled "Shadow Over the East". The author considers such things as the rise of Prussia, the reunited Germany and the relationship between East Germany and West Germany, the role of the Balkans mentioning Tudjman of the Croatians and Milosevic of the Serbs, and the advent of Russia in a post-Soviet era. The case of Russia is particularly interesting and the author examines such bizarre trends as the rise of the National Bolsheviks and Zhirinovsky, mentioning also the writer Eduard Limonov and the possibility of a Red-Brown alliance. The next chapter is entitled "From the Margins to the Mainstream". Again the author indulges in the worst sort of conspiracy theory hype, maintaining that the militia movement and white supremacists were behind the Oklahoma City Bombings. The author also discusses such individuals as David Duke, Pat Robertson, Patrick Buchanan, and the authors of _The Bell Curve_ attempting to link such disparate individuals into a single movement. Finally, the author ends with a pro-immigrant rant. The book ends with a Conclusion in which the author re-iterates his biases and maintains that fascism exists even within democracy and must be rooted out at all costs.

It is unfortunate that while this book offers much useful information on various players in the Neo-Nazi underground that the author has decided to let his biases interfere with genuine research. However, if one can stomach to read through the left wing moralizing, there is some interesting information to be obtained here. In particular, developments in Europe offer interesting possibilities including the problematic of linking the far right with either the United States or the Soviet state or various Third World causes. Such developments continue to play an important role in our world today.

Fascinating, chilling and brilliantly written and reported
By A Customer
We tend to have short memories in America, and an "it can't happen here" attitude, especially about the most horrific atrocity of the century: the rise to power of the Nazis and the wake of murder and destruction that followed.

But Martin Lee's excellent book "The Beast Reawakens" should chill to the bone anyone who thinks that the Nazis died out with the Third Reich's defeat in World War II. Far from dead, most of the most powerful Nazis not only survived the war, but thrived, some under the protection and patronage of the American and Soviet governments, who believed they needed the secrets and contacts that these killers possessed.

Over the years, these Nazi veterans laid low, acting opportunistically to build successful business and espionage operations, but never relinquishing their ideologies. They sowed the seeds of fascism and National Socialism in Europe, the United States, the Middle East, South America and the Soviet Union, and influenced the next two generations of neo-fascists everywhere.

Lee's book uses original interviews and extensive research into official documents to trace the direct lineage between the original Nazis and their counterparts today. It is sobering and absolutely maddening to see how various governments, particularly those of Germany and Russia, have looked the other way while the post-Cold War neo-Nazis have embarked on violent attacks on "undesirables" and on a new wave of recruiting.

I found myself wakened from my complacent beliefs by reading "The Beast Reawakened" and urge anyone interested in freedom to read this book and pass it on to their friends.

Martin Lee is also co-author of two terrific books, "Acid Dreams" and "Unreliable Sources."

From Publishers Weekly
At least since Freud, mothers have borne the brunt of blame for many of their family members' personal problems, defects and failures. But even cynics may be stunned by Caplan's documentation of a mother who was labeled "hysterical" and lost custody of her children after she accused their father of sexually abusing them. Many such injustices are highlighted in this edition, substantially revised from the 1988 original, building a solid case for Caplan's claim of widespread "mother-blaming." As cultural scapegoats, mothers are often viewed and treated by influential "experts" as unstable, emotionally needy, selflessly giving, smothering and tyrannically powerful. Caplan outlines 10 pervasive myths wherein all mothers are deemed either "perfect" or "bad," a double bind perhaps best illustrated by the myth that both working and stay-at-home moms are somehow "wrong." Fathers are in for a bit of culpability here, but Caplan doesn't offer many solutions for the problems that people often blame on their mothers. Instead, she concentrates on political arguments and rehabilitating the mother-daughter relationship itself. She encourages the daughter to "demythologize" her mother and forge an alliance by, among other things, drawing out her mother's life story and finding qualities to respect in her. Though some of the author's suggestions, including her "expressive training" in which mothers and daughters resolve problems through role-playing, may be simplistic, Caplan effectively articulates an indisputable societal offense and offers the first steps toward its remedy. From Library Journal
In this revision of her 1989 book of the same title, Caplan, a clinical and research psychologist, examines the pervasiveness of mother-blame in society and identifies ten myths surrounding motherhood (e.g., "good mothers" don't get angry). She takes an especially close look at the role psychologists and therapists have played in promoting these myths. The book's second half makes suggestions for improving relationships between mothers and adult daughters through honest communication and a rejection of the myths. Certainly, readers will question some of Caplan's views of women and mothers: she seems to overlook many healthy, thriving mother-daughter relationships, and not all readers will agree that the myth of male superiority is as widespread as the author suggests. Nevertheless, this work is well researched, with extensive notes and suggestions for improving relationships. Recommended for public libraries.

good reading

For once someone isn't looking to scape goat the female parent as has always been done in the past. Yes, moms make mistakes but adult daughters need to stop listening to Fraudism entirely and always blaming mom for everything. Helps moms understand their kids better to. Good read

The New Don't Blame Mother Mending Mother-Daughter Relationship
By gkirk214
This is the best book I've read on healing the relationship with Mother-Daughter! Great Great Book! However, this book needs to have an additional book with a title for healing the Mother-Son relationship or Healing the Mother Daughter and Son relationship. Every Man and Son needs to read this book but they won't due to the title. We need to heal Son's as well as Daughter's relationship and stop the blamming toward the one who loved us the most. I hope the Author Paula Caplan gets this information as I have not found a way to contact her.
Thanks gail

Every once in a while a book or movie comes along that changes your whole life and how you choose to live. This book has done that for me. There is nothing worse than not being able to change something important in your life and on top of that, not knowing why! Now that the "why" is answered I can prepare myself for what comes next.

Vested Interests: Cross-dressing and Cultural Anxiety, by Marjorie Garber

Beginning with the bold claim, "There can be no culture without the transvestite," Marjorie Garber explores the nature and significance of cross-dressing and of the West's recurring fascination with it. Rich in anecdote and insight, Vested Interests offers a provocative and entertaining view of our ongoing obsession with dressing up--and with the power of clothes.

From Publishers Weekly
From the "transvestite theatre" of Shakespearean England and Japan's kabuki to Peter Pan, Boy George and female Elvis impersonators, cross-dressing is a pervasive social phenomenon, claims Garber, director of Harvard's Center of Literary and Cultural Studies. She states that "there can be no culture without the transvestite," who, she argues, calls attention to cultural, social or aesthetic dissonances. The weight of her thesis is carried by such figures as Liberace, Divine, Oscar Wilde and David Bowie, yet her witty, consistently provocative study demonstrates effectively how cross-dressing is wrapped up with recognition of the power of women, androgyny, responses to gay identity and anxiety over economic or cultural dislocations. Garber also looks at transsexuals, drag performances, plays and movies. Photos.

From Library Journal
Do clothes really make the man? What do Elvis and Liberace have in common? Why is Peter Pan always played by a woman? These are just a few of the questions of sexual and sartorial politics raised by Garber. From the sumptuary laws of medieval Europe to "vogueing" in New York City in 1991, she traces Western society's inconsistent and often arbitrary views regarding the clothes we wear and how they affect class structure, gender stereotyping, and our own self-image. Garber boldly asserts that transvestism makes culture possible by deliberately confusing the constructs of gender identification and challenging the social control they seek to maintain. Well documented and thoroughly researched, Garber's book is a serious work that is not without a piquant feel for the ironic, especially as she details the lengths to which both men and women have gone to hide their gender in order to get ahead in the world. Often raising more questions than it answers, this is nevertheless a fascinating book about an equally fascinating subject. Highly recommended.

From Kirkus Reviews
An elaborate theory by Garber (English/Harvard), insisting that the transvestite is at the elusive heart of Western culture. In a century-sweeping book, Garber applies current critical thought to the phenomenon of ``cross-dressing'' in fact and fiction, high culture and low. Arguing that gender is culturally constructed, she contends that cross-dressing challenges the binary categories of male and female as well as the concept of category itself. It signals ``cultural, social or aesthetic dissonances.'' Garber argues that critics have looked ``through,'' not ``at,'' the transvestite, failing to see what is a Freudian ``primal scene.'' Defined here again and again, the transvestite is ``the space of desire,'' ``a space of possibility,'' a ``third.'' Garber plays out her theory in detailed analyses of countless transvestite figures- -Shakespearean heroines, Tootsie, Lawrence of Arabia, M. Butterfly, Madonna, and Laurence Olivier (here portrayed at death as ``the triumphant transvestite''). There is no shortage of provocative speculation and information, some worth considering and some--like that about transvestite magazines and the politics of transsexual surgery--not. Unfortunately, the sub-flooring of French critical terms sets Garber's argument on a slippery slope ending up too often in a theoretical mire where ``the transvestite is both a signifier and that which signifies the undecidability of signification.'' A discussion of Elizabethan dress codes and costuming concludes with the typically reductive claim that ``there is no ground of Shakespeare that is not already cross-dressed.'' Also, when critical terms are rampantly applied--Elvis and Liberace, for instance, labeled, like Peter Pan, ``changeling boys''--they quickly lose impact. Bound for controversy, this study admirably attempts to cross from the academy to popular culture, but theory here acts less as a window onto cultural evolution than as a screen drawing attention its own overwrought, repetitive pattern. crossdressing & acadamic insight
By A Customer
first off, i can't say i would recommend this book to someone who doesn't have a more academic background, flitting as it does from foucault to freud & back again, but i have to say that it's critique & thesis are well-reasoned, well-argued, & definitely well-referenced! it's like a cross dressing field guide in some ways... i found myself making up a list of movies/books to check out. even moreso, it's a great book for anyone wanting to study gender construction in general... as it gets at that shadowy figure inbetween the genders, who belies/affirms all the constructs...
thank you marjorie garber!

Accumulating Dust, But Some Parts Still Worth More Than Just 3 Stars
By Bonam Pak
I read the original 1992 hardcover edition. Which means, this book is dated. Definitely missing yet is for example the concept of metrosexuality. The newest films analyzed are Tootsie (1982) and Yentl (1983), already a decade old when this book was published.

Marjorie Garber uses a very rich vocabulary, some of which I was even able to stump internet dictionaries with. On the other hand, she uses unintended racist vocabulary. She may have known better in 1992.

Many parts of the 390-paged book (+ 35 pages of footnotes and 38 picture pages, some of which are in color) are very interesting to read. Usually, when playing topsyturvy with our Western concepts of gender. For example that the pink-blue baby colors were reversed before WWI. When and in what circumstances Muslim societies appear to harbor more gender freedoms than the West. (Though the author doesn't mention everything possible.) Many history lessons are to be learned, e.g. that Joan of Arc wasn't tried under the inquisition for heresy, but transvestism.

Lengthy chapters are reserved for classic films, sumptuary laws, Peter Pan, Salome, detective stories, M. Butterfly, the posthumous Harold Washington scandal, Josephine Baker and the image connection among Valentino, Liberace and Elvis. With most of these chapters I had the feeling that they were somewhat arbitrary or that separate long articles, worthy as they may be individually, were compiled for a book, which often loses sight of its overall coherence. Even though I liked reading about all of that, it felt too much like a patchwork text instead of clear messages.

If you are interested in gender studies, don't miss out on this one. Just make sure, this will not remain the only one. Some other books include The Mismeasure of Woman, Myths Of Gender: Biological Theories About Women And Men, Revised Edition, The Meanings of Sex Difference in the Middle Ages: Medicine, Science, and Culture (Cambridge Studies in the History of Medicine) and Nature's Body: Gender In The Making Of Modern Science

Cross-Dressing and Cultural Anxiety

(New York: Routledge, 1992) 443 pages
(ISBN: 0-415-90072-7; hardcover)
(Library of Congress call number: HQ77.G37 1991)

A wide-ranging book on the public manifestations
of wearing the clothes and adopting the manners of the other sex,
especially as seen in the mass media--television, movies, magazines.
Cross-dressing for the following reasons:
entertainment in the theatre and movies;
respect in the workplace;
to express the other-gender side of one's personality;
for personal sexual interest, arousal, & orgasm;
as an element of one's homosexual sex-script;
to 'pass' as the other sex;
transsexualism--because one believes one is 'really' the other sex;

This book explores cross-dressing as a cultural phenomenon,
rather than a psychological phenomenon.
