Good, but in need of editing

This book has wonderful ideas, but is written so poorly that it takes forever to read. It is plagued with redundant academic jargon, and ridiculous sentence structures. Hopefully the publisher (or author) will correct this in a future edition.

Michael R. Stevenson is Director of the Diversity Policy Institute and Professor of Psychological Science at Ball State University and is the former APA Congressional Fellow to Senator Paul Simon. He lives in Muncie, Indiana.

She has published widely on the subject of hate crimes sexual orientation, eating disorders and body image. Truly highlights policy in everyday life

I assigned this book for a course I'm teaching on social policy and the LGBT community and my students love it. It's easy to read, totally accessible, and really highlights how policy impacts everyday life for LGBT people. This book will obviously continue to grow outdated in terms of policy changes in the courts and legislature. But it will remain useful as a snapshot of all the areas in which policy and politics touches our lives.

Inspired by the lyrics of Stevie Wonder's 1976 hit "Sir Duke," this work contains an interesting and controversial mix of material. Lavezzoli, a musicologist and jazz musician, has interviewed Ellington colleagues (e.g., drummer Butch Ballard) and aficionados (e.g., recording technician and collector Jerry Valburn) to gain some insight into the great bandleader's music. Interspersed among those dialogs are chapters on musicians that Lavezzoli believes Ellington influenced. The author's choices of Frank Zappa, Prince, Sly Stone, George Clinton, James Brown, and Ravi Shankar will certainly arouse controversy among rock, funk, soul, and Hindustani purists; however, presenting Ellington through the work of stylistically dissimilar musicians forces the reader to listen to Ellington with new ears. Still, the approach is unusual and makes for a rather loose read. This is recommended for larger public libraries and may be of interest to smaller libraries with significant popular music book collections. A workmanlike portrait of the legendary composer/pianist/bandleader. The author, who played jazz professionally before giving it up to attend college, initially planned to publish a series of socio-biographical interviews of Harlem musicians before being pre-empted by Nat Hentoffs Hear Me Talkin to Ya (1966). After Ellington's death in 1974, Lawrence decided to organize his material around this revered jazz master, but its origins show: capsule biographies of virtually every musician who ever worked in the Duke Ellington Orchestra, though quite interesting in themselves, interrupt the narrative flow and make it difficult to focus on Ellingtons life and career. However, Lawrence does a decent job of outlining the basic facts. Born in 1899 into a middle-class Washington, D.C., family, Edward Kennedy Ellington acquired a sense of strong racial pride from his high school principal, a noted African-American historian. Though his elegant clothes and demeanor won him the nickname Duke while he was still a teenager, and though he would be hailedespecially in Europeas a composer equal to Ravel and Stravinsky, Ellington never denied his roots and was proud to write and play Negro folk music, as he remarked during his wildly successful tour of England in 1933. Hits like Mood Indigo and Take the A Train, as well as his more ambitious suites, reflect Ellingtons refusal to accept limits on his creativity. Lawrence describes all the music lovingly; hes particularly sensitive to the contributions individual band members like trumpeter Bubber Miley and arranger/composer Billy Strayhorn made to the unique Ellington sound. His coverage of the Dukes personal life seems an afterthought. Frequent references to Ellingtons narcissism dont provide an especially useful key to his character. Most performers are narcissistic; few shared the stage as graciously as Ellington. This is the first full length biography I've read on Ellington, although I did take a course with Mark Tucker, author of "The Ellington Reader" in college. This book is written by a psychologist and a musician of the 1940s, not a researcher, and the previous reviewers have criticized him for a lack of research. Lawrence relies heavily on Sonny Greer and Mercer Ellington as interview subjects and there may be the value in skimming through this biography. As a drummer, the story of how Greer got his magnificent drum kit that you see in all of the 30s and 40s footage of the Ellington brought me a smile. Stories like this lead me to believe that Lawrence would have been better served facilitating a memoir of Sonny Greer and some of his musical contacts [he admits that he was trying to do this until Hentoff's "Hear me Talkin' to Ya came out in his introduction] than writing a flawed biography of Ellington, a towering figure who deserves a thorough scholarly biography like the one that Lewis Porter did for John Coltrane.
The book has two other big flaws. First, the 50s and 60s are really quickly treated and he will go through a year of the band's life in a couple of pages. I personally was first drawn to Ellington's music through this musically rich period and while the creation of some of Ellington's key suites like the Far East Suite is mentioned, I would have liked a better sense of what life in the band was like at this time.
The biggest problem, here, however, is that Lawrence the psychologist intervenes at times and leaves the reader with a sour taste in his mouth. I do not need speculation on the psychological nature and "narcissistic" elements of Ellington's personality. I'd rather get detailed research as to what happened in his personal life from varied sources and allow me, the intelligent reader, to draw my own conclusions. The fact that the last paragraph of the book concludes with a statement of his "profound narcissism" and how Ellington just wanted "everybody in the palm of my hand", diminishes the ultimate musical and spiritual legacy that Ellington left behind.
Right now, I don't see a major full length biography of Ellington on the market that I can completely endorse. This book has some value as a quick, though flawed, overview of the band while introducing members like the great Sonny Greer.

I found this book reasonably entertaining, approaching, you might say "attacking", Duke Ellington from a psychologizing angle. Interesting. Few people ever really knew Ellington, and the ones who did didn't talk much about him, at least not in any revealing way. And the man was clearly an affable narcissist, with a tendency to be passively cruel to band members and some family members. If this personality hadn't existed, Thomas Mann would have invented him, with a little help from Freud. And of course there's nothing wrong with taking a figure so frequently deified down a couple of pegs. So the author's tack seemed, for the nonce, acceptable.

Unfortunately, I noticed quite a few oddities, in dates, attribution of composer credit, and elsewhere. I also wondered how this guy could have interviewed all these old timers, this late in the era. And I'd never heard of a trombonist of this name who played with Benny Carter, Luis Russell etc. in the Forties. And though I'm a thorough Ellington fan and personal admirer, I'm no scholar. So I had to wait till I stumbled on the "brief" by Steven Lasker, who is a scholar, to realize what a hoax this book is. Stick "depanorama stratemann lasker lawrence routledge" into the google search engine. You'll get a issue of the Duke Ellington Music Society bulletin from late 2001. Read it before you buy this book.

Routledge didn't originate the contract on this book. They bought it from some other outfit. Routledge used to be a standard issue publisher of unreadable academic jabber of the paramarxist school, parasitizing on English universities. In the last few years they've tried to break into the American popular market. Hence opportunistic stuff like this.

There's a Duke Ellington industry out there, appealing to scholars, musicologists and plain enthusiasts of good music. So there are bogus reissues on CD and preposterous books like this. The same thing happens with Mark Twain; you come to expect it. But damn Routledge for getting involved in the seamy side of it as they scramble to find a place in the dwindling high end market.

A. H. Lawrence has written a book filled with errors on almost every page. Lawrence's lack of scholarship will seriously call into question the lack of Routledge's editorial integrity if not its motives - unless the publisher decides to recall the product.
If you really want to see this book, wait until it is remaindered or piled on the "free" table - that should be soon.

Fantastic midwifery policy/politics overview

You know with Davis-Floyd's name (as an editor, and as an author or co-author of several chapters), it's going to be well-researched, dense with information and has a good chance of completely changing your perspective. Repeatedly. The process of professionalization/regulation/legalization currently underway for midwives in the US is fraught with controversy: for the women who are concerned their out-of-hospital options will disappear as part of the compromises inevitable in regulation, for the midwives who see the possible slide to more interventionist birth, for obstetricians and others who see midwifery in and out of the hospital as competition and lower-quality care.

Davis-Floyd and Johnson have navigated a difficult path between developing themes by wrenching the data around in support and handing the reader hundreds of pages of information and narrative of how the legalization process has gone in various states with no guidance. They fell into neither trap, but instead built up the story, state by state, woman by woman, law by painstakingly crafted law. The result develops slowly and requires close attention, but is well worth the effort and provides a depth of ideas for activists working the same problem in the rest of the country that would otherwise be difficult if not impossible to convey in a usable fashion.

I hope this text finds an audience outside the community of birthing women, midwives and health care. It's a brilliant example and analysis of how public policy really happens in the US.

A must-read for midwives

As a student midwife, I found this resource invaluable. It is not just about where we CPMs fit into society today; it also describes where we came from and how we got here. Each chapter is carefully organized and full of examples. The research is quite scholarly as well, encompassing a breadth of sources that provides a basis for further research should one be interested.

Well known for her Women in Science: Antiquity Through the Nineteenth Century, Ogilvie has joined with Harvey (Almost a Man of Genius) to publish a two-volume bio/bibliographical resource covering approximately 2500 women scientists from all over the world. Recent biographical publications devoted to women scientists, such as Notable Women in the Physical Sciences: A Biographical Dictionary (Greenwood, 1997) and American Women in Science, 1950 to the Present (LJ 2/15/99), are limited by either discipline, time period, or nationality. Ogilvie and Harvey include scientists from across all fields and nationalities, although they admit that the dictionary is still slanted toward the United States and Great Britain owing to language barriers and the amount of information available. The editors use broader criteria for earlier time periods but apply more stringent standards for later centuries, when science became more professionalized. The entries were written by a small group of contributors comprising scientists and historians. Arranged alphabetically, each entry has a short summary of personal information, education, and professional experience, a brief biographical narrative, and a bibliography of selected primary and secondary sources. The entries range from very brief to a few pages for the better-known subjects. Indexes include lists of scientists by occupation, time period, and country as well as a subject index. With several biographical dictionaries of women scientists already in print, is a new one really necessary? In this case, yes. This new title is more wide-ranging than others in the field, with excellent indexing and reference lists that have scholarly appeal. With this publication, Ogilvie expands upon her 1986 book, Women in Science, Antiquity through the Nineteenth Century (MIT Press), which was one of the first biographical collections of its kind. The impressive list of contributors consists primarily of science historians and scientists.The dictionary contains biographies of approximately 2,500 women in science around the globe from antiquity to modern times, including those who were born before 1910 or were born more recently but have since died. Entries are arranged alphabetically with standard biographical data (family information, birth date and birthplace, educational and professional experience, and honors) preceding a biographical article from a few sentences in length to two pages. Most of the articles are meaty, based upon archival materials and scientific papers published by the individual scientist as well as standard biographical sources. Primary and secondary sources consulted are listed at the end of each entry, and a bibliography of standard sources on women in science and medicine is included in the work. The four indexes will be appreciated, as they arrange the entries by country, time period, subject, and occupation.The foreword states that the dictionary broadens one's notions of what constitutes a contribution to science. The editors also state in the introduction that they used inclusion criteria that differed according to the time period in which the women lived, because career pathways available to women varied greatly over time. It is indeed true that the historical record may have ignored the contributions of many women in science, that some have been forced into unwilling scientific obscurity and were actively prevented from flourishing in scientific fields. However, it seems unnecessary to include in this particular historical record women whose personal involvement in science was questionable. Jane Addams (social reformer), Emma Darwin (amanuensis to her husband, Charles), and Katharine Jones (sister and supporter of Robert Boyle) are among the women covered here who, it can be argued, contributed little in their own right to the study of science. Although Ogilvie and Harvey may have erred on the side of overinclusiveness, their work is nonetheless a highly recommended addition to the reference shelf of academic, public, and high-school libraries. This volume revealed information to me about my aunt and namesake, Lucybelle Bledsoe, who was a part of the first ever climate research team - a group who pulled the first complete ice cores from Greenland and Antarctica. In her study of the life and death of Perpetua, a third-century Christian martyr, Salisbury (history and humanities, Univ. of Wisconsin, Green Bay) examines the cultlike mentality that drove a 22-year-old woman with an infant son to turn away from her family and accept with enthusiasm a horrific death for her faith. Salisbury describes the social, political, and religious climate in Carthage that made Christianity so appealing to its disillusioned youth. In addition, pagan Rome's emphasis on magic and omens combined with the North African tradition of noble suicide to create a social dynamic in which public death in the arena would be viewed as not only acceptable but also desirable. Utilizing Perpetua's prison diary as well as an eyewitness account of her final hours, Salisbury analyzes the martyr's "passion," her recorded dreams and visions, in relation to these existing forces. The impact of her death on those who witnessed the event as well as those who heard about it became apparent in the veneration bestowed on Perpetua by her contemporaries and in the efforts of patriarchal church leaders like Augustine, who tried to minimize her strength and leadership qualities. An insightful, moving account of the death of an early-third- century Christian martyr, based on her own diary. Vibia Perpetua was the daughter of an old respected Roman family of Carthage and, although raised in accordance with the pagan religious traditions of Rome, converted to Christianity, one of many faiths competing for devotees in the Roman Empire. Just 22 years old, she was arrested with several other converts to Christianity and, because she refused to acknowledge the divinity of the emperor Septimus Severus (and even though she was the mother of an infant), was sentenced to be killed by beasts in the Carthaginian arena. Salisbury (Medieval History and Humanities/Univ. of Wisconsin, Green Bay) uses the text of Perpetua's diary, written in prison, to explore this extraordinary young woman's decision to renounce her prosperous life and embrace a horrible death, and to depict in vivid and fascinating detail the world of pagan Rome and the insular community of the early Church, with its emphasis on prophecy and speaking in tongues. Salisbury notes the contrast between the Roman religion, with its thousands of household gods, and monotheistic/trinitarian Christianity with its claim to be the only universally true religion. Also, the patriarchy of traditional Roman society, which restricted women to the roles of wife and mother, stood in stark contrast with the egalitarian promise of Christianity, which taught that all persons were equal before God and often gave women a leading role. Using Perpetua's text, Salisbury shows that, despite the dangers, the young woman turned her back on her affectionate family and infant son to become a Christian because of her profound conviction that she was experiencing the presence of God. This is one of the best historical reads ever. It paints a complete picture of early Christianity in what was then known as Carthage. Of course this is about the Christian martyrs Perpetua, Felicity and the 3 men that were all sacrificed

a valuable book

In Perpetua's Passion, Salisbury has served two different communities very well---those interested in early Christianity, and those interested in the history of women. She deftly creates a sociology of life in a group of early Christian martyrs, and does so in a way that makes very clear family relations, gender roles, and the strength of Vibia Perpetua herself. I have used this book when teaching a course on ancient & medieval women (and will do so again), and found that it worked very well. Students found it readable and useful and thought-provoking.

The Seed of the Church

"Perpetua's Passion: The Death and Memory of a Young Roman Woman" is the story of Perpetua, a young Roman Christian who was martyred in 203 A.D. It is a book well worth reading...but it is also missing something.
I found Perpetua's Passion to be very well written and apparently well researched. Joyce E. Salisbury adeptly explores and explains the Roman and Carthaginian culture that Perpetua lived in. Mrs. Salisbury also seamlessly weaves into this tapestry a compelling picture of the Christian Church during the time of these events.
The book is based off of the diary that Perpetua kept during her captivity. Mrs. Salisbury explains the significance of Perpetua's actions in light of the culture of her day. She then shows the influence of Perpetua's story on the later Church.
All of this is very commendable. I was most impressed by the scholarship and insight of this book. Yet a question forms within me when I contemplate this book:
So what? Where is the heart in this book? There is nothing in this book which says anything about how these events speak to the soul of people today. Maybe I missed it...
What happened to Perpetua was more than a clinical historical event that affected the people immediately around her and eventually helped form certain patterns of thought within the Church. It was much more. It was a mortal being making an eternal statement. It was a moment in time where the Christian truth that there is more than this life was given a full embodiment in the actions of a young woman--A young woman who had every reason to live, yet for her, to die was gain. It was a moment of ultimate surrender, and at the same time, one of ultimate victory. The blood of the Martyrs is the seed of the Church!
In the end, in spite of my objection, I recommend this book. It is insightful and instructive. However, don't just read this book with your head. Approach this one with your heart and your soul.

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle is the first continuous national history of any western people in their own language. Compiled over several centuries, it traces the migration of Saxon warlords to Roman Britain, their gradual development of a settled society and conversion to Christianity, the onslaught of the Vikings and then the Norman Conquest. It continued to be written long after the last Saxon king was dead, and goes on to describe atrocities perpetrated by the barons during the reign of Stephen. About the Author
Michael J. Swanton is Professor of Medieval Studies at the University of Exeter. His extensive publications include translations of the epic poem Beowulf (1978) and a selection of Anglo Saxon Prose (1993).

Good edition of an important work

Michael Swanton's edition of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle is a good, handy reference in modern English. A group of manuscripts (eight in all) rather than a single unified book, the Chronicle is the first continuously-maintained vernacular national historical work in Western history. Swanton has here translated and edited the manuscripts to form a continuous whole, and included extensive notes.

I bought this edition in college and have used it for a lot of classwork and independent research since then. The translation is clear and simple and the notes are certainly helpful.

The only thing I dislike about this book is the way in which the text is presented. Rather than each manuscript being presented as-is, they are divided up and rearranged so that all of the manuscripts form a piecemeal chronology from Creation to the final entry in 1154. If you're trying to follow the account of a particular manuscript it can be frustrating, as you have to flip back and forth quite a bit, but this is really a small complaint.

Swanton has included a lengthy introduction that details the various manuscripts of the Chronicle, and extensive back matter including family trees, bibliography, maps, photos, and a detailed index of names and places.

M.J. Swanton or Micheal J. Swanton appears to have two similarly named items available on Amazon. One, a translation of "The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle", which appears to be precisely that. And two, "An Anglo-Saxon Chronicle" which is a pamphlet sized edition consisting of seven two to three page passages from Old English printed on left page with vocabulary listed on the right. "An" Anglo-Saxon Chronicle is intended as a tool for those just beginning the study of Old English. It's cool in its way, but if you order it with the expectation that you will receive "The" Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, as I did, you will be very disappointed.

Unfortunately, (in)definite articles seem to be ignored by Amazon's software, and user reviews from either item are showing up under both entries. Even the item description for "An" Anglo-Saxon Chronicle is affected. So be sure you are buying the correct item!

Good for the Price

Well, I've seen better translations, but this is a good book for the price. It's thorough, if nothing else. I'd recommend it if you already have at least passing knowledge of the ASC.
