Our Beautiful, Dry and Distant Texts: Art History as Writing, by James Elkins

Our Beautiful, Dry, and Distant Texts examines art historical writing as an expressive medium, capable of emotion and reflection - and therefore deserving of serious consideration for its own sake, as the testament of art history and of individual historians. Elkins asks such questions as: How do various art historical approaches represent works of art? What can they see, and what must they miss? And what insight does such writing offer us about ourselves? Drawing on analyses of texts by Derrida, Deleuze and other leading critics, as well as illustrations of artworks from various cultures, Elkins constructs an eloquent plea for circumspection in the entire endeavour of trying to force images into words and in the curious vocation of writing the history of art.

Review
"Concerned with the rhetorical dimensions of artwriting, Elkins identifies the ways in which immediate questions about the truth of interpretation are inevitably deflected by awareness of the stylistic qualities of art historians' texts... Wildly imaginative at making connections, his highly original book inevitably will be one necessary starting point for all future discussion."
-David Carrier, Carnegie Mellon University

The Magic of the State, by Michael Taussig

Set in the enchanted mountain of a spirit-queen presiding over an unnamed, postcolonial country, this ethnographic work of ficto-criticism recreates in written form the shrines by which the dead--notably the fetishized forms of Europe's Others, Indians and Blacks--generate the magical powers of the modern state.

Review
"Taussig offer[s] much of value for us to think about." -- Religious Studies Review

From the Back Cover
The Magic Of The State focuses on the theater of spirit possession at a Spirit Queen's enchanted mountain where the dead--Blacks and Indians, Europe's fetishized others--pass into the bodies of the living, creating a circulation of ecstatic bodily power. The Magic Of The State envisions power's violence, but also its adjection and attraction. This work is, in the surrealist tradition, a kind of defacement of power, and of the sacred underpinnings of modern sovereignty.

About the Author
Michael Taussig teaches in the Anthropology Department at Columbia University. He is the author, most recently, of The Nervous System and Mimesis and Alterity, both published by Routledge.

Not Magical
By V. Radcliffe
I have published academic work based on Taussig's writing on the 'public secret', or knowing what not to know. That material was quite compelling. This starts out interestingly enough but increasingly becomes flaky I am afraid. I couldn't see basing a paper on it in all seriousness. I stopped reading 2/3 of the way through, it was enough.

A fine example of Taussig's
By Henri Edward Dongieux
Taussig, as his career has progressed, has embraced more and more Nietzsche's dictum that cultural representation must - absolutely must - be inherently radical. The Magic of the State perhaps exemplifies this best - being of a different conceptual order than just about anything out there in large-press anthropology. However unorthodox Shamanism, Colonialism, and the Wild Man or Defacement may have been with their incorporation of the more literary voices in ethnography and cultural studies, The Magic of the State slips between orthodox and heterodox altogether - as it simply abandons anything resembling an enthographic model, and instead takes the form of a fictional narrative that might be called anthropological literature or, more accurately, surrealist anthropology...
If you can suspend your standard expectations of what state-theory should be all about, you will find Taussig's book extremely rewarding and even humorous in spots. If you remove the historical, traditional, and methodical bases of Benedict Anderson's Imagined Communities, and inject a generous helping of hallucinatory imagery, dada-esque playfulness, and representational experimentation (and maybe some steriods), you MIGHT come within several kilometers of describing Taussig's masterful book. But in this case, to describe would be to "write around," and this is certainly a work that should be "written with" and celebrated for the vistas from which it enables us mere mortals to see.

The modern state as voodoo ceremony
By Mark J. Knickelbine
Taussig starts with an impressionistic analysis of a Latin American spirit possesion cult and then uses it as a model to explain how the modern state relies on various mysterious incarnations as the basis of its legal system, economics, official history, even its highways. Mixes ethnography, political theory and cultural criticism in an often unsettling but ultimately convincing performance. You WILL believe in ghosts!

Gender Pluralism: Southeast Asia Since Early Modern Times, by Michael G. Peletz

Choice Outstanding Academic Title 2009!

This book examines three big ideas: difference, legitimacy, and pluralism. Of chief concern is how people construe and deal with variation among fellow human beings. Why under certain circumstances do people embrace even sanctify differences, or at least begrudgingly tolerate them, and why in other contexts are people less receptive to difference, sometimes overtly hostile to it and bent on its eradication? What are the cultural and political conditions conducive to the positive valorization and acceptance of difference? And, conversely, what conditions undermine or erode such positive views and acceptance? This book examines pluralism in gendered fields and domains in Southeast Asia since the early modern era, which historians and anthropologists of the region commonly define as the period extending roughly from the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries.

Fanon and the Crisis of European Man: An Essay on Philosophy and the Human Sciences, by Lewis R. Gordon

As the first book to analyze the work of Fanon as an existential-phenomenological of human sciences and liberation philosopher, Gordon deploys Fanon's work to illuminate how the "bad faith" of European science and civilization have philosophically stymied the project of liberation. Fanon's body of work serves as a critique of European science and society, and shows the ways in which the project of "truth" is compromised by Eurocentric artificially narrowed scope of humanity--a circumstance to which he refers as the crisis of European Man. In his examination of the roots of this crisis, Gordon explores the problems of historical salvation and the dynamics of oppression, the motivation behind contemporary European obstruction of the advancement of a racially just world, the forms of anonymity that pervade racist theorizing and contribute to "seen invisibility," and the reasons behind the impossibility of a nonviolent transition from colonialism and neocolonialism to postcolonialism.

Lewis R. Gordon's well-written and clearly organized essay focuses on racial identity...Unlike most research on race..they have asked the correct question: What is race and who benefits from it. Antonio McDaniel, University of Pennsylvania.

I wish I could have given this book more stars!
By M. PARADISO-MICHAU
In his second, but by no means secondary, book, Gordon is at his existential-phenomenological best! The issues brought up in the Fanonian scholarly dialogue are the beginning of what Gordon attempts to accomplish -- an unrelenting critique of the ideological perpetuation of racism in all of its manifestations. This proposal is present in everything else that Gordon has blessed us with publication. I would recommend any piece of writing by Lewis R. Gordon as highly as any classic, from Plato to Marx. The reader can actually feel and experience Gordon's rigorous thought process in the writing of this, and other, books. A good published review of this book is by Marilyn Nissim-Sabat entitled "Globalization from Below: An Appreciation of the Work of Lewis Gordon," and it appears in the Spring 1997 edition of the C.L.R. James Journal.

Shut Out: A Story of Race and Baseball in Boston, by Howard Bryant

Shut Out is the compelling story of Boston's racial divide viewed through the lens of one of the city's greatest institutions - its baseball team, and told from the perspective of Boston native and noted sports writer Howard Bryant. This well written and poignant work contains striking interviews in which blacks who played for the Red Sox speak for the first time about their experiences in Boston, as well as groundbreaking chapter that details Jackie Robinson's ill-fated tryout with the Boston Red Sox and the humiliation that followed.

From Publishers Weekly
The Boston Red Sox' inability to win the World Series is one of the most familiar oddities in sport; the club's peculiar relationship with race is not quite so well known. Bryant, who's covered the Oakland A's and the New York Yankees for daily newspapers, brings excellent journalistic instincts and baseball smarts to the table. And he's a Boston native to boot, meaning he's properly versed about the city that former Celtic hero Bill Russell once called "a flea market of racism." Bryant examines looks at Jackie Robinson's doomed Fenway tryout in 1945 and at Pumpsie Green, who eventually became the Red Sox' first black player, a full dozen years after Robinson broke the color barrier. An unspectacular player, Green was befriended on the field by Ted Williams and by Russell off, as both tried to shield him from the pervasive vitriol. Bryant visits the modern era as well, reporting that the Sox did not sign a black free agent until 1993, and detailing slugger Mo Vaughn's mercurial stint in Boston. An MVP in 1995, the New England-reared Vaughn embraced his role in the race debate, even wearing Robinson's old number. Bryant illustrates both the ballplayer's dedication to community service and his repeated run-ins with the law, and wonders if Vaughn was run out of town by the press and team management. Throughout the book, Bryant looks at both sides of the race issue, and backs his conclusions with exhaustive research from a variety of sources.

From Library Journal
This important study by sportswriter Bryant examines the race relations of one of baseball's most storied teams, the Boston Red Sox, from the early 1930s to the present. During most of that period, the Red Sox were owned by the Yawkee family, taken to task here for their insensitivity regarding race or outright racism. So, too, is Boston, notwithstanding its reputation as "a cradle of liberty." Bryant relays the seldom-told story of Jackie Robinson's April 1945 tryout with the team, which resulted in someone (possibly owner Tom Yawkee) booming out a racial epithet. Having passed on Robinson, the Red Sox did the same with Willie Mays. The franchise was the last to include an African American player on its roster, utility infielder Pumpsie Green. Unlike Green, outfielder Reggie Smith challenged racial norms while with Boston and paid the price. The team's, and Boston's, relationship with other black stars, including Jim Rice and Ellis Burks, was also troubled. Even Luis Tiant, the heart and soul of the mid-1970s Red Sox, was hardly treated better by the team in contractual negotiations. Only recently have black players (such as Pedro Martinez) felt more welcomed. For general libraries.

From Booklist
Boston has always been a city sharply divided along ethnic lines, and for years the resulting turmoil was reflected in its baseball team. The Red Sox were the last team in major-league baseball to be integrated, and their refusal to sign black athletes was a major factor in the team's postwar mediocrity. But even as black players joined the Red Sox, their Boston experience was often less than pleasant, especially during the 1970s, when the city was embroiled in a bitter busing battle. Bryant, who has written extensively on baseball and race, tracks the progress of the Red Sox organization through extensive interviews with players and others team employees. He concludes that, though the team has made progress--race relations within the organization are probably on a par with most other major-league teams today--there are still black players, including Ellis Burks, who played in Boston in the 1990s, who believe that the community remains distinctly inhospitable to players of color. A carefully researched contribution to the social history of baseball. Wes Lukowsky

NOT BAD BUT VERY REPETITIVE

THIS IS AN INTERESTING BOOK AT TIMES AND VERY TRUE. THE AUTHOR SEEMS TO KEEP TELLING US ABOUT THE WORKOUT JACKIE ROBINSON HAD WITH THE RED SOX THAT WAS STAGED TO COVERUP THE TRUTH ABOUT PREJUDICE ON THE RED SOX. I GOT TIRED OF HEARING THE SAME THING TIME AFTER TIME IN THIS BOOK. ON THE GOOD SIDE HE MAKES A LOT OF POINTS WITH BILL RUSSELL, PUMPSIE GREEN, JIM RICE ETC. HE TRULY SHOWS HOW THE RED SOX HAD MANY OPPORTUNITIES SLIP THRU THEIR HANDS BECAUSE OF THEIR ATTITUDE TOWARD BLACKS. WORTH READING.

Wow I thought it was the curse of the Babe?
By William a Bourne
What an eye opener! However, it did get tedious as he was redundant in his writing and added too much other items other than baseball. A recommend read to all my New England friends who have always claimed how open Boston is to all races. I always thought the "Curse of the Bambino" was too simple of an explanation for the Red Sox for not winning. How about one for the Cubs?!?

About more than just baseball and the Red Sox
By Phil Kasiecki
This is one of the best books I have read. While it may be centered on baseball, and the title certainly implies as much, this is much more than just a book about baseball. There's a lot more to be gained from reading it than just baseball, and thinking of it as a baseball book doesn't give any real sense of what a reader gains from it.

I'm a lifelong Red Sox fan, with the first season I remember being 1986 at age 10. So I grew up with the late years of Jim Rice's career, then players like Ellis Burks and Mo Vaughn, all of whom get prominent mention. I knew there was a stigma surrounding the Red Sox regarding race even as a kid, but I didn't know great details or have any idea just how deep it ran until I read this book. Needless to say, it was unsettling to learn about.

Bryant breaks down how the Red Sox were the last team in Major League Baseball to integrate, then how life was for black players who were part of the organization. He talks about the difficulty Reggie Smith had playing despite immense talent, the friendship Pumpsie Green and Bill Russell had and Russell's frustration with Boston, the career of Jim Rice, Ellis Burks' experience before he went on to become a slugger elsewhere, and what Mo Vaughn meant to the franchise. Even though I grew up knowing about Rice, Burks and Vaughn, this book shed a lot of new light on their experience.

But through it all, Bryant also shows how the media and the city played a role in all of this. He talked about the emergence of the Boston Globe at a time when the city had more newspapers than it does today, and the role personalities like Will McDonough, Peter Gammons, Larry Whiteside and Mike Barnicle played in reflecting and shaping attitudes on race as they concerned the team and the city. He goes into detail on how the tryout for Jackie Robinson was arranged in 1945. He illustrates how the Red Sox often reflected the city, and oddly enough, how in 1975 the Red Sox came to be a bright light for a time during the era of busing. He goes through the Stuart case and even had an interesting note about Rice's days growing up in South Carolina and how his talents were exploited by local politicians. It was also quite interesting to learn about how Boston's neighborhoods have changed over time; for example, I wasn't aware that Mattapan was once almost all Jewish.

Bryant has written a winner. Having read a lot of his columns before, I knew what he was capable of, and that's why I bought the book. I wasn't disappointed, and as I got further along I couldn't put the book down and had to finish it. I was glad I did.

Acres of Skin: Human Experiments at Holmesburg Prison, by Allen M. Hornblum

At a time of increased interest and renewed shock over the Tuskegee syphilis experiments, Acres of Skin sheds light on yet another dark episode of American medical history. In this disturbing expose, Allen M. Hornblum tells the story of Philadelphia's Holmesburg Prison.

From Library Journal
Relying on prisoners' firsthand reports, Hornblum (urban studies, Temple Univ.) has written a thorough account of the questionable medical experimentation carried out in Philadelphia's Holmesburg Prison from the mid-1940s to 1974. Research on everything from cosmetics to chemical warfare agents was conducted there, often with minimal or no record keeping. Such research raises serious ethical issues. Throughout, Hornblum asks whether prisoners can give informed consent, particularly when the potential consequences of the research are not fully explained. Although most of the book centers on Holmesburg, Hornblum does cite other prisons across the country where similar practices took place before they received widespread condemnation in the 1970s. What is shocking about this is that it did not happen in the distant past but in our own generation, with the doctors involved still in practice. Frighteningly, Hornblum reveals that at the Nuremberg trials Nazi doctors cited American prison practices as a defense for their nefarious medical experiments in the camps. Essential for students of medical ethics.AEric D. Albright, Duke Medical Ctr. Lib., Durham, NC
Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Thanks in good part to the Freedom of Information Act (and many interviews, too), Hornblum tells the story of medical experiments, ended in 1974, on prisoners in a Philadelphia prison. Most of the experiments involved the effects of chemicals on the skin (hence the title), but they also included military trials, stopped in 1966, of LSD and other mind-altering drugs. Dermatologist Albert M. Kligman and those prison administrators who knew about the experiments always claimed that no prisoners were coerced, informed consent was required, and any prisoner could withdraw from any experiment at any time. Hornblum punches holes in each of those statements. He compares some of the experiments with those of Nazi doctors during World War II, showing how, in one case, a Nazi physician apparently saved his life by describing some of the U.S. prison experiments to the judges in the Nuremberg trials. A low-keyed but devastating picture of U.S. medical experimentation and the men, educational institutions, and drug companies that carried it out. William Beatty

Shocking!
By ~*~K-PoP~*~AnGeL~*~
We are all aware of the nuclear experiments done during the cold war, right? Well insight shows from this book that many prisoners and people of lower social classes were experimental guinea pigs in the name of Modern Science. It is horrifying to read, and yet interesting at the same time. We also brought over experimental Nazi Doctors from the Holocaust to help the US Government on some experiments and were even given alias names to keep their identities and whereabouts secret. This is even happening today believe it or not, and it is horrifying to think what they have done during the Cold War, I come to think, what ... are they doing now? It's a scary thought!

New York Times is wrong: very solid book.
By A Customer
I looked up the negative New York Times book review to see what Higbie's problem was. She thinks Hornblum is biased because he supports "prison reform." The book sticks quite close to the issue of medical experiments in prison, which must be at the very least something in prison in need of "reform". Higbie is also offended by the comparison to Nazi medical practices. But that's not exaggeration by Hornblum. As the book relates, the Nazi doctors at Nuremberg successfully avoided the death penalty by arguing that their own pointless torture experiments were similar to that conducted by U.S. doctors in U.S. prisons.
It's an excellent book. The book focuses on the specific prison, but has a lengthy chapter on experiments on prisoners throughout the U.S.
My only real criticism is the optimistic ending of chapter 3 that the FDA banned prisoner experimentation in the 1980s. As far as I can tell, the regulation was suspended at passage and then repealed in 1997. Fifty years after Nuremberg, experiments on prisoners unable to give informed consent continues.

Amazon.com Review
The Resurgence of the Real is a fascinating proposal for correcting the ills of contemporary society. On the one hand, it offers an eloquent critique of modernity's tendency toward scientism and industrialism at the expense of holistic environmentalism. On the other hand, the distinction drawn between modernism and postmodernism turns out to be simplistic and largely illusory, for although Charlene Spretnak identifies her postmodernism as also "pre-modern," its origins and articulation are part and parcel of the modernist project. Still, her call to recover awareness of our context, our relationships to others and to our environment, is not only valid but necessary to our survival.

From Kirkus Reviews
The well-trod ground of ecospiritualism is trundled over once again by Spretnak (The Politics of Women's Spirituality, 1981, etc.). Modernism is Spretnak's unoriginal bugbear: It can be found tattering the social fabric; it lurks behind the disintegration of the economy, health care, everyday life, ethnic and racial hatreds. Modernism is the deep structure repressing the ``real,'' imposing discontinuities ``between humans and the rest of the natural world, between self and others, between body and mind.'' Economic expansion and technological innovation, Modernism's frayed mantras, are little but the mechanistic blatherings of an ideology gone sour, Spretnak intones. The body is not a biomachine requiring external intervention upon breakdown; it is a self-correcting energy system. Nature is not simply matter to be acted upon; it is a dynamic, self-regulating cosmos. Place is not just where you are, but an influential ecosocial frame. Yes, yes. The mingling of body- mind/cosmos/place is where Spretnak situates the ``real,'' so she mooches about in the theories of chaos, complexity, and Gaia, and in the works of John Ruskin, William Morris, and revolutionary artistic movements to buttress her point. And they are points well taken but here made ponderously and without a whit of humor. The writing is lumbered, and Spretnak comes across as schoolmarmish and scolding: ``Ironically, the counterculture of the sixties was dismissed as romantic even though its ignorance of the Romantics was almost total.'' She is drawn to the dry, high-minded ``geologian'' Thomas Berry, reasonably enough, but her position is impoverished when she ignores the spirited intellectual high jinks of Paul Feyerabend and others who so nimbly eviscerated the notion of modernity. ``The gist of all this is that life is an interactive phenomenon of planetary and biospheric scale.'' Stop the presses. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Beautiful and Philosophical
By Renee Thorpe
Humanity is so ready for this groundbreaking book!
I heard Charlene Spretnak on the radio and rushed to buy this book.
Spretnak goes beyond our arbitrary ways of categorizing the world and its inhabitants, offers hope for the environment, for humankind, for our spirit. Forget right and left, modern and postmodern, communist and capitalist, all the usual labeling. Spretnak explores what's wrong with modernity, from its beginnings in the age of Renaissance humanism! She writes eloquently of the suicidal rush to embrace technology at all costs.
Excellent book for any environmentalist, anyone with a spiritual or religious inclination, any art history student, any political scientist.

A Beautiful & Elegant Critique of the Post-Modern Mystique!
By Barron Laycock
In "Resurgence of the Real", Author Charlene Spretnak takes accurate aim at the pandemic, negative and deadening global aspects of the hyper-rationalized social, economic, and political environment of the postindustrial world, diagnosing its ills, and proposing a quite realistic, attainable, and more organic alternative to our misguided ways. In this elegantly written and argued neo-Luddite thesis, Spretnak passionately speaks on behalf of a more enlightened post modern ecology that actively eschews the deadening embrace of 20th century scientism and technological industrialism and recognizes the basic human connection to nature and the environment.
This is a book with a mission and a message. On the one hand, she offers an impressive critique of how our blind fascination with rationalism, science, and technological innovation has strangled out of consciousness any appreciation or awareness of the natural world around us, and has led us into a ritual denial of our fundamental connection to nature. On the other hand, showing how illusory and simplistic our intellectual categories seem to be, she argues for a recovery effort in order to actively regain our individual and collective awareness of our natural context, our relationships to other human beings, and to our basic grounding in the ecology of the real world around us.
But the leap toward such critical awareness eludes many of our contemporaries, who are locked into such a modernistic, mechanistic and rational worldview that they tend to view themselves as bio-machines requiring external interventions when malfunctioning. Every thing about our artificially created and sustained human environment holds us within this kind of faulty and dangerous world-view. Instead, she argues, we need to recognize that we are self-correcting energy systems operating within nature, which she defines as a dynamic and self-regulating cosmos. This is heady and quite intellectually stimulating stuff, and requires a close reading and a requisite ability to think, as they say, "outside the box" of conventional thought.
The author faces the issues of our time with eloquence, clarity, and a keen intellectual acumen. The book is obviously written with great care, passion, and unimpeachable intellectual clarity. Spretnak offers a stinging and accurate diagnosis of what has gone wrong in the post-modern world, and presents, with great lucidity and careful thought, a look at the emerging postmodern ecological world-view we need to overcome the ecological, social, and political problems confronting us. This is a very special, passionate, and wonderful book, and is one offering hope for the future. I hope you enjoy it.

A worthy slog
By Cecil Bothwell
Charlene Spretnak's depth of insight is nearly overwhelming. In fact, the only reservation I have about recommending this book is that it is really heavy going. You're gonna have to work at it -- and you may want to save Chapter 2 for later, unless the concept of "deconstructionist postmodernism" either gives you goose bumps or makes you seethe. (For what it's worth, Spretnak dispatches with the whole empty concept of d-p, but her triumphant campaign isn't for the faint of heart.) In brief, the author's argument is that modernism -- the philosophy which has ruled us for a few hundred years -- has led us astray. In particular it has distorted our relationship to body, nature and place. We have accepted a separation of self (intelligence or spirit) from our physicality, of our lives from nature (as if we lived in glass boxes, or existed "on top" of it), and of our entire existence from its setting. Modern culture embodies the pretense that it is a cloak around the planet which could as easily be draped elsewhere. Of course that is not and has never been the case, but it is the conceit of modernism that such a mental picture is the scientific or objective truth behind our subjective experience. What follows lies all around us today. Spretnak is very optimistic that the Real is coming back with a bang, and just in time. Her philosophic defense of bioregionalism, of holistic health strategies, of Green politics, of deeply felt community, of respectful attention to ancient alternatives, and on and on, is brilliant and invigorating. As is her demolition of the underpinnings of GATT, the World Bank, modern economic theory and the use of computers in grade school classrooms, or the overweening adoption of a computerized mind-set. She blasts Sesame Street out of the water. BAM! Most telling of all is Spretnak's explanation of why radical localism does not imply a new isolationism. She argues that we must learn to live locally in intimate contact with our bioregion, but with utter respect for the global commons. We each live in a place. We all live on earth. We must adopt solutions that work Here without deleteriously impacting There. This one may well knock your socks off. Whew.

Recensione Cultural History of Plants (in Italiano)
By Lidia Zitara

The last plant
By Reader from Yellow River
It's inevitable people made room for plants. Most mammals make their own vitamin C. But people can't. They need plants. So it's also inevitable people took up farming, for balanced, one-stop diets. It meant time to build homes near such basic crops as barley and wheat in the Middle East and West Asia; maize in the Americas; rice in East Asia; and sorghum in sub-Saharan Africa. It meant time to develop civilizations there, and along the Mediterranean. It meant time to grow plants, not just to eat, but for flavor, look, and smell.

Plants spread outside their native range by wind, water, birds and animals. They spread faster and further by people. They spread with trade. They spread with people visiting and taking what they liked. They spread with people moving and bringing something familiar to new homes. They spread with war. For example, 1,700 years ago, barbarians took over Rome until a ransom was paid in peppers.

Contributing writers cover alcohol, caffeine and sweeteners; fragrants; fruits; grains; herbs and vegetables; materials such as latex, oils, poisons and waxes; medicinals; natural fibers and dyes; nuts, pulses, and seeds; ornamentals; psychoactives; roots and tubers; spices; and woods. Each chapter lists the best-known plant examples. Each tells where they started and where they are now.

My favorite chapters are on fragrants; fruits; herbs and vegetables; and ornamentals. Partly it's finding out how many aren't natives. Partly it's because a sentence appeals to me as a Virginia Tech-trained master gardener. It says farming makes life possible. But flower-, fruit- and vegetable-growing makes life something people lead.

THE CULTURAL HISTORY OF PLANTS is a surprise. It deals with science. But the writing's easy to read. Editors Sir Ghillean Prance and Mark Nesbitt et al do well with many facts and some guesses. They give clear examples, good index, and helpful references. I'd have liked more pictures. But what's there works. As do the main points. First, the last place to find natives is becoming their native homes. Some fit into new homes. Without native diseases and pests, many take over. Invasives will kill 30-47% of all plants in 50 years. Two, wild plants take a beating from cultivated plants. But it's best to keep a plant's full range of cultivated and wild forms. Third, different forms of a cultivated and a wild plant take a beating. But it's best to keep the full range of a cultivated and a wild plant. That works against mass disaster, such as the potato famine in 19th-century Ireland. Of many crops, people grew potatoes. Of potatoes, they grew one kind. So the blight wiped out all. Fourth, there's no getting away from what Virginia Tech master gardening calls the wildlands-urban interface of where nature and people meet. They've actually been more in each other's faces since people stopped grazing and started growing their own food.
