Atrocious writing followed by laughable arguments. I can't believe this person is a published writer let alone a "scholar."

There are much better books on this topic.

Don't be fooled by the frothy pink jacket art: this is a dense, academic volume. It addresses every conceivable aspect of the psychology of mate selection in late 20th-century America, giving equal emphasis to social and clinical approaches to understanding romance. The book's first half is devoted to an ambitious and inclusive survey of the experimental literature on the general factors that influence attractionAfor example, similarity, geographical proximity, physical beauty and social status. The second half underscores the relevance of early childhood experiences with and between one's parents in understanding one's attraction to specific persons. Recent clinical theories suggest that we are attracted to persons who are in some critical way similar to our parents and who have the potential to directly stimulate, and thus heal, old childhood wounds. Pines also offers advice to those seeking love. But she does a far better job of educating readers than advising them. Although founded in scientific evidence, her suggestions are brief and simplistic ("try to be in a good mood when you meet new people") and appear to have been tacked on to the end of each chapter simply to appeal to the self-help reader. Though Pine is at her best when laying out complex theoriesAaccurately referring to the original research studies on which her assertions and conclusions are basedAand the material is intellectually stimulating, reading it feels like work. A couples therapists clinical look at how and why we fall in love removes some of the mystery from that most magical of human experiences. Pines (Romantic Jealousy, 1992; Keeping the Spark Alive, 1988), a social psychologist and researcher who is also a clinical psychologist specializing in relationship issues, tackles her subject from both perspectives. As a social psychologist and researcher she analyzes how we fall in love; her clinical experience and psychodynamic theories come into play in the exploration of why we choose a particular person. She draws extensively on three studies: interviews with 100 men and women about their romantic relationships; a cross-cultural study comparing American and Israeli accounts of falling in love; and interviews with 100 couples comparing their reasons for falling in love with later stress in their relationship. Pines describes falling in love as a staged process. First is geographic proximity; then a state of emotional arousal; awareness of the others appealing appearance and personality; discovery of similarities; and finally, with growing intimacy, the revelation of deeper psychological needs and the mutual ability to satisfy them. Gender differences and the evolutionary, social, and psychoanalytic theories that seek to explain them are also examined. As to why we fall in love with a particular person, Pines looks at various psychological theories and concludes that an internal romantic image plays a key role in whom we choose and that childhood experiences of love shape this image. Interviews with four individuals reveal how early relationships with parents affected subsequent romantic ones; Steve, for instance, was abandoned by his father and terrified of the live-in boyfriends of his cruel and demanding mother. He fell in love with a domineering woman and found the relationship exciting but scary, and he remains unattached. Not a how-to guide for the lovelorn but a serious, research-oriented work of special interest to those involved in couples therapy. Interesting read.

This book has an interesting perspective on the human feeling called love, and the reasons why people fall in love. Of course at the end of the day its a perspective, and even if it is backed up with scientific research, tests..etc in my mind love is a subjective matter, and it's very hard to make generalities about such a topic. If you want to get answers to some of your questions, regarding human relationships, and interactions, this book will definitely give you interesting facts.

Great book

One of the first few books I read when I was starting to explore the psychology of relationships. This book helped me understand more about myself from the perspective of my childhood, and I feel that self-understanding is the prerequisite of healthy relationships. It will be a good idea to start from books such as these before going on to other books which provide a more general style of advice.

Editorial reviews describe the reading of this book as 'work' and more geared towards professionals involved in couples therapy, but I actually quite like the 'heavier' aspects of the book eg. psychological studies, analysis of psychological theories etc. I find them very useful to the understanding of certain ideas instead of simply just accepting these ideas as facts.

I spent 5 days reading this book and could not put it down at times. Very educational stuff! I know so much more about myself than before. However, films about love no longer seem the same, and I used to be a romantic movie buff, because the concept of love has lost much of its mysterious aura for me. Although that probably is a good thing.

A good place to begin

I ran into this book at a time when I was eager to learn more about the nature of romantic relationships. It is an excellent introduction and resumé of the voluminous psychological literature on romantic relationships, and specifically, the process of "falling in love." There are suggestions for self-help, but the reader wishing concrete advice will want to consult other books on the topic, in light of Pines's conclusions. I was impressed with her command of the literature and her extensive research and clinical experience; she is extraordinarily well qualified to have written this book. (Contrast this with something like _Are You the One for Me?_, a preposterously naive discussion of similar themes by someone -- DeAngelis -- who has no evident qualifications.) Ayala Pines has given us an excellent place to begin an exploration of our own and others' relationships. Its style is really not academic, and its tone is warm. No previous knowledge of psychology is necessary.

In search of an audience

On reading Downey's book, I was hard-pressed to tell exactly what kind of audience _The Machine In Me_ was aiming for. Too technical for most anthropologists and too loaded with anthropological jargon for most technology types, _The Machine In Me_ seems to fit only the narrow field of anthropological technology studies, thus depriving related audiences (general cultural anthropologists and techies) of its many interesting insights. Downey's examination of how a class of engineering students struggled, interacted, and in some ways became part of the CAD/CAM software with which they worked was fascinating. His success in communicating his sometimes complex observations about the social dynamics of technological fields and the nature of the students' relationships with the software, however, are obscured by unnecessarily complex and roundabout prose. Downey is left talking about "transcribing human agency into technology" without ever employing the clearly appropriate term "cyborg." In fact, Downey's book is unmistakably a work in the burgeoning field of cyborg anthropology, yet the book avoids all mention of the term. The end result, I think, is a book without a clearly defined audience, one that refuses to position itself inside a discipline and therefore is likely to be passed over by those who would benefit most from it.

My Compliments to the Chefs

Michael and Ariane Batterby have given us, in ON THE TOWN IN NEW YORK, a fairly comprehensive look at New Yorkers doing what they do best: eating and partying. I appreciate the earlier reviewer's complaint about historical inaccuracies--he's right, they are BIG errors. However, as a serious investigation into what New Yorkers put in their stomachs, I was pleasantly enlightened. Turtle Soup?! Turtle Soup?! What the...?
I loved the reprints of the menus of hoidy-toidy restaurants. It really gives you a sense of extravagance bordering on gluttony that went on in 19th Century NYC. And then there are the vivid chapters of New Yorkers at play: The Stork Club, The El Morocco, etc. The all-night bashes of the 20th Century, as well as extravagant somber dinners of the 19th Century are wonderfully described. (Note: The number of eateries that were brought down by organized crime seemed a little inflated. I know it ruined many a joint, but all the joints presented in the book? I had a hard time swallowing that. Pun intended.)
As a History, no, I would not base a dissertation on it. As a thorouhghly enjoyable look back at a world now long gone and what the people ate and did in it, I wish to pay my compliments to the chefs. Delicioso!

A Plate of Rehash

One would have thought that the authors would have corrected their earlier mistakes when re-issuing a 25th anniversary edition but the kindest word for their research is "haphazard" at best. Rather than attempt the most elementary primary research, they have instead relied upon trite retellings of events with no regard for veracity. One example - they insist that the Bradley Martin Ball of 1897 requested attendees (and there were 900 documented - not 700 as the authors allege) attend "as courtiers of Louis XV." Copies of the invitation abound at several locations and would have revealed the wording, "Costumes of the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries de rigueur." Further, the Martins did not "flee America forever and seek asylum in England" as a result of the dinner. They had lived primarily in England and Scotland for three years PRIOR to the Ball - their only daughter, the Countess of Craven, lived there as well with the Martins' then-only grandchild. The final insult is the authors' allegation that Mrs. Martin "with her legendary grace ... bawled" at visitors to a dinner she later gave at the Waldorf. That charge is pure fiction and the authors cannot possibly lay claim to having been there more than 100 years ago either to hear such a supposed exclamation nor to observe how it was delivered. The authors need to spend more time in a library and less in a kitchen.

Just a few decades ago, South Korea was an agrarian country, a backwater of international business. The average life span was 47 years, the average per capita annual income less than a hundred dollars a year. By the end of the 20th century, Korea had risen to become the world's 11th largest economy, the eighth largest trading partner of the U.S., and a global leader in construction, semiconductors, shipbuilding, and steel production. Steers, a University of Oregon business professor who has written two previous books on Korean business issues, believes that a big part of that country's rise is good old-fashioned entrepreneurship. What Americans admire so much about Bill Gates and Phil Knight--the vision, the tenacity, the refusal to back down--is actually found all over the world. In Korea, it's best personified by Chung Ju Yung, who created the Hyundai Business Group. By the time Chung retired in 1991, Hyundai accounted for 16 percent of Korea's gross domestic product and 12 percent of its total exports.

Chung founded Hyundai (it means modern in Korean) in 1946 as a car-repair company, then quickly moved into the construction business. He became the U.S. Army's favorite contractor during the Korean War, and, afterwards, expanded Hyundai's ventures to include electronics, shipbuilding, oil refining, securities and investments, and automobiles. Almost any businessperson can draw lessons from Chung's success. This book is EXTREMELY DETAILED and chronicles the RISE of HYUNDAI through the leadership of CHUNG JU YUNG. It is a FASCINATING ACCOUNT of how one man founded an INCREDIBLY SUCCESSFUL and INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED INDUSTRIAL CONGLOMERATE out of the ashes of World War 2.

Wonderful!

I thoroughly enjoyed this account of Chung Ju Yung's life and the rise of Hyundai. The son of impoverished farmers, Chung managed to build the world's largest shipbuilding company, create a competitive Korean automobile, and sped the development of South Korea into one of the world's foremost economies--all with little more than sweat and determination!
Steers does a great job of detailing Chung's personal and business character, along with providing a detailed history of the growth of Hyundai in the larger context of the Korean economy. I highly recommend it!

Simply Amazing

I had heard of Chung Ju Yung from a Korean fiend of mine. While I was going through the lows of my job, this book has motivated me to start my own business soon. The dipiction of one of the greatest entrepreneurs ever is so life-like that it would excite and thrill not just entrepreneurs but ordinary people. I am now reading it the second time and like every moment of it. It gives me goose bumps when I read about how this great man got someone else's money and technology to build ships with no prior experience of his own only to know that the orders would get cancelled upon completion! How one could lose all that he has and yet conclude that he could do anything if he put in his mind, soul and hard work into it. This story of an extraordinary entrepreneur who defied all textbook rules of business is a MUST read for westerners and aspiring entrepreneurs.
